HOUSTON, (AP) -- A convicted killer sent to death row for killing a sheriff's deputy apparently committed suicide in his cell, prison officials said Tuesday.
The body of Jesus Flores, 25, was found by a corrections officer about 4 a.m. Tuesday. Flores was pronounced dead about an hour later, said Michelle Lyons, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
"He had lacerations on his throat and forehead," she said.
Flores apparently tried to use his own blood to scribble a message on the wall, but it was illegible, Lyons said.
Flores was convicted of capital murder for the May 2001 death of Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Dennis, 35. Flores was 19 at the time of the shooting.
Flores had been on death row since December 2001. His case was still on appeal before the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which had already upheld his conviction and death sentence. An execution date was never set.

Thankfully, he just saved the state some $$ too
Checking to see if I give a damn...nope, my Givadamn is busted.
He should have thought of this before he killed the deputy and saved the deputy’s family all that grief.
Leave him in his cell til his appeals are exhausted in about 15 years. It’ll give the others something to think about.
Unfortunate he didn’t take advantage of the 6+ years of life after murdering the officer to turn his life around and accept Christ. If he did, he wouldn’t have thought this was the right way to deal with what he was dealing with. He’s lost forever.
And the problem is....
What would Jesus do? Not what Hey-suse did in killing a deputy. ? Was this one of our friendly guest workers?
Flores becomes the eighth condemned man in Texas to take his own life since death row reopened in 1974.
Slackers....
Cool, I wish a few more death row inmates would follow his lead.
Everybody has to make their own decision. He made his.
Somehow, you know the ACLU and other pro-crime groups will sue Texas over this....just watch
His dying words, written in his own blood, the very blood that was draining from his dying body, written so that the world would receive the most important message of his life, were illegible.
Loser!
The message said, “Argghhhhhh.....”

On May 22, 2001 in Houston, Flores took a family member's car without permission.
The incident was reported to law enforcement.
A 35 year old white male Harris County deputy pursued Flores.
While the deputy was applying handcuffs to Flores, Flores shot the deputy
in the head using a gun that Flores had concealed, resulting in the deputy's death.
There's a much improved chance of suicide or getting killed in prison when you kill a law enforcement officer.
Which is as it should be.

A preliminary investigation indicated Flores extracted a blade from a safety razor, then cut his own throat from ear to ear in his private cell, said John Moriarty, TDCJ inspector general, whose office is investigating the incident.
Flores, a pool installer and laborer, had argued with his sister at her northwest Harris County home over damage to her car he had caused the night before. Flores left his sister's home, driving away in a family member's car. His sister called 911 and Dennis arrived to take the report about the missing vehicle. As Dennis was taking the report, Flores drove past in another sister's vehicle and Dennis pursued him.
Flores shot Dennis in the head as the deputy was handcuffing him.
Christ... why did his name have to be Jesus?
Do you have a more recent photo? This one appears to be premortem.
More razors for death row inmates please!
Well he did something charitable with his life. It is cheaper to just bury him than to pay for the last minute lawyering and then bury him.
Great post!
Hmmmmm.....
Well, he's gone.
I doubt there's going to be an in depth investigation over a suicide.
Wasn’t this suicide “cruel and unusual”? Family members will probably sue.
WONDERFUL!
Interesting comments at the link.
I really don’t know why Texas does not equip all death-row cells with a movable chair, a nice sturdy hook on the ceiling (that the inmate can use to hang clothes on to dry), and maybe issue every death row inmate a sturdy rope belt.
It would cost the state maybe $10,000 to furnish these to every death row inmate, but think of the potential millions that the state could save.
See post #19
In spanish Jesus is pronounced Hay Zooz.
I see we finally get to see some 'feel good' news. After all, this guy should be posthumously applauded for his time management and sense of fiscal responsibility.
Send his family a crisp $20 bill. That’s about what he saved us by foregoing an execution. It’s only fair.
“His dying words, written in his own blood, the very blood that was draining from his dying body, written so that the world would receive the most important message of his life, were illegible.”
His message was illegible. The school system, not Jesus Flores, is to blame.
No good. That’s also prehumous. (Is that a word? Well it is now.) Looking for something more recent (postmortem, posthumous). Something a bit more cheerful.
Poor Hey Zeus. Let’s give him a scholarship to a good elementary school.
“Cool, I wish a few more death row inmates would follow his lead.”
I knew what the responses for this thread would be... but it was worth the laugh.
Good country song too !
FReepers are predictable, aren’t we?
Seven years to late, but better than never.
Back in the good old days, here in the south, it was hard to escape "suicide" if you harmed a child, law man or raped a woman. For some reason the streets were safe to walk.
Well, hmm. How about the skull of Pac-man?
Harris was let off for that murder because it was ruled "self defense". Anyway, what were they going to do to Harris - - send him to death row? I suspect Harris ended up with a few extra cartons of cigarettes....
Hey, it’s the thought that counts.
That’s what my Parents taught me.
Aloha kakou
Thank you! That’s closer to what I had in mind. Too bad the zombies already lapped up the blood.
Why don’t they leave DIY suicide kits in the cells of every death row inmate ?
Thank you, Jesus.
It will be 28 years this June that John George Brown shot and killed Officer Donald F. Reed outside a bar in Garden, CA .Brown, the scum was given the death penalty twice! Don was a personal friend of the family and became a LEO because of my FIL. Meanwhile, the taxpayers have paid for this slime’s room, food and basic needs for almost 28 years! Razors for all of death row inmates in solitary confinement!
after the juan mccain win.....
this suicide is the first good news of the morning!!!!!
Committing the executions that the American government is unwilling to do.
