That’s exactly why it would matter. They need to know where it’s going. Once it hits the sensible atmosphere (where density is constantly increasing) the predictions don’t get too much better, but they don’t get any worse either. But I don’t think any populated area would have more than a few hours notice. And even then, the odds of it hitting somewhere like NY or LA are so slim. It’s much more likely to hit water, or farmland somewhere.
My first thought was that they disabled it.

I used to have a “NATO Cosmic Top Secret” clearance. I’m expecting a call from the cosmic dudes to get me in the know about this situation. When I get the info, I’ll FReepmail ya!
Seriesly, even when I had that clearance, I would eat in the mess hall all the time......(but I know what you mean)
