JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., has endorsed Mitt Romney's bid for the White House and says he would welcome an opportunity to help the Republican "implement his conservative vision'' if elected.

"It is an honor to join Governor Romney and his campaign for our nation's highest office,'' Cochran said in a statement released by the Romney campaign and confirmed by Cochran's office.

"At this moment our nation faces unprecedented challenges, and Governor Romney has the experience, vision and values needed to strengthen our country for future generations,'' Cochran said in the statement. "Governor Romney is a man of outstanding judgment and strong character.''

Cochran is Mississippi's senior U.S. senator.

I foresee more of this: Huckabee is too dangerous, unelectable and un-Christian. Rudy's three marriages and positions make him more of a democrat, and McCain is, well, McCain.

Mitt has some very good men supporting him. I hope this helps him in Mississippi. Hopefully he will carry some Southern states.

Although Huckabee is a fiscal liberal and unelectable I don’t see him as un-Christian. Anything but...

I will take Romney over Huckabee any day. I will not under any circumstances vote for Huckabee. Romney is now my first choice, Guiliani next and I will hold my nose and vote for McCain if the nominee. Huckabee is too much of a Sunday Christian for me and I dislike his constant rudeness and sarcasm. He throws insults around like he wolfs down cheesy fries. Do not like that in a candidate for POTUS of the republican party.

Not only is McCain “McCain”, but he has served int he Senate with Cochran long enough for Cochran to get to know him. Thus the endorsement for someone else.

That`s it. Out of them all Mitt seems to be the best of the lot.

With some polls having songbird mccain in the lead in Fla.
they`d better start lining up with Mitt and endorsing asap

As a Fredhead, I can assure you that he's about as Christian as Osama bin Laden. He has run the dirtiest campaign in my memory (I'm 47). If Mike Huckabee is your idea of a good Baptist minister, I don't know much about the denomination.

If a guy from MS says Mitt is a conservative, then Mitt IS a conservative. You don’t GET more conservative then Mississippi.

These endorsements, as well as seeing over 1,000 fellow freepers now supporting Mitt, makes the Duncan-to-Fred-to-Mitt transition a bit easier.

This gal is from Mississippi, and I think I can safely say that politicians in Mississippi are nothing if not practical. Senator Cochran has obviously surveyed the field and looked at the economic picture of the US and decided the best candidate for our current situation is Mitt Romney. I would not call Mitt Romney a conservative. Romney will need to pick a conservative for VP.

Among other things, this endorsement is interesting because Thad was one of the few Southern Republicans to support McCain a few years ago during the hub-bub over campaign finance “reform.”

I guess Thad was trying at that time to please his constituents in Carroll County, where a lot of oldtimers still remember McCain’s father and grandfather with considerable pride.

In any case, whatever motivated Thad’s earlier support of McCain, it seems he now knows McCain lacks the proper temperament to be CIC.

Cheers for Thad!

You don’t GET more conservative then Mississippi.

Hmmm. In 2004 Bush carried Alabama with 63% of the vote. Bush "only" got 60% in Mississippi.

FYI, I think Romney carries both Alabama and Mississippi.

Southern support for a Northeasterner is nothing to shrug about.

Though we, at times, can be "geographically blinded" with regards to our candidates, we also have enough sense to spot a phony when we see one. Especially one masquerading as a Southern conservative.

Fred couldn't get any traction in New Hampshire in part because the people up there couldn't get past the way he talked. Despite Romney's religion and his yankee accent, he won't have trouble winning the deep South, especially against the Hildebeast.

I might talk funny, but I don't think funny.
