Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka said that she and other members will picket Ledgers United States memorial services, not those held in his native Australia.
You cannot live in defiance of God, she said. He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and its OK to be gay.
A press release circulated by the church references Leviticus 18:22 in the Bible, which states that thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

What a disgusting display.
I thought someone recently won a 9mil judgment against them?
That didn’t shut them down, I see?
Leviticus 18:23: Thou shalt not be a media whore....God hates media whores!!
OK, so I totally made that up!
Militant
I have long held the belief that Fred Phelps is a big homo himself and this theatrics are intended to assuage his own guilt and shame.
I must be confused.... or have the wrong Bible. Mine says “judge not.....” and says that God will do the judging. Folks like these protesters should be ashamed of calling themselves Christians. By now, this young man has already been judged. They don’t have any business protesting his funeral.
this = his
Nah. Fred Phelps always shows up where he can get the most publicity. He’s a publicity junkie with a pile of lawyers behind him.
Get over it media and agenda driven politicos, the crux of his fame is that he pretended to be gay in exchange for money.
That said, I really liked Ledger as an actor in many of his roles.
The Westboro Baptist folks are a prime example of the religious left and what can happen when a lawyer gone bad gets his license to practice law pulled.
He is simply a crazy man, with a few dedicated crazy followers. They are just crazy. No one should be indulging their madness.
Some people are just plain dispicable.
Aren't you judging the Phelps' in violation of what you just said? I'm not supporting the Phelps, just showing that your reading of Scripture is unreasonably narrow. We are also told to judge people by their fruits. "By their fruits you shall know them".
Carolyn
Yes, judging isn’t my job or yours or anybody elses, except for the Westboro babtist Church........
Exactly — “by their fruits you shall know them” not “by their fruits you shall judge them”
Westboro Baptist Church: the people who think the series `F Troop’ was a PBS documentary.
lol.... folks like that give Baptists a bad name (and yes I am one)
I can't even begin to understand these people. But I'm curious... What was their reasoning for trying to protest Mr. Rogers' funeral?
The Apostle Paul wrote that it’s only okay to judge those IN YOUR CHURCH. Anybody else is God’s business..............
I am, too. That’s why I misspelled it......
Goes right along with his not being a Christian. He's a huckster that funds his little cult with lawsuits, nothing more.
I wish these people would just go away...freaks
Time for the Patriot Gurad to start their engines
Yes, I noted the intentional misspelling and lowercase - thank you, sir!
Did you see THIS one?
Oh Lord.
Please explain the difference. The statement was made by Christ to advise us how to judge people who call themselves a prophet or the returned Christ. We are also called on not to "give what is Holy to dogs or cast pearls before swine......" Following this requires the exercise of discernment, or judgment.
Sick and disgusting freaks.
These crazies have no respect for the dead.
Because Fred Rodgers didn't speak out against homosexuality on his show. And because it was a guaranteed way to generate some headlines and snag some publicity..
Ah shucks!
I was excited for a second when I thought you wrote
..."I thought someone recently used a 9mm against them?"
You cannot live in defiance of God, she said.
“She” is a moron. Of course you can live in defiance of God. It is not ADVISABLE, but it can be done.
So we can't judge self proclaimed prophets "by their fruits" (as Jesus instructed) unless they are in our Church? That's nonsense.
Phelps is an active Democrat candidate.
I hold the suspicion that his “religious” protests are a ploy to slur the conservative Christian opposition to homosexuality. It is the most cited example of “hate”. But his party affiliation is rarely discussed even though he has run for office several times.
His antiwar stance also gets less play in the press.
>>Following this requires the exercise of discernment, or judgment.<<
Judging them is not punishing them or their families. They are going to protest at this man’s funeral. I’m sure the family is doing a happy dance about it.
I’m uncomfortable with it and I don’t even know the man.
Judging is disernment that the person’s actions should be avoided, NOT punishing the innocent people who had nothing to do with those actions.
Funerals are for the living. I’m sure Heath himself doesn’t care a lick about this.
I am with the PGR. We don't start our engines for Actors. We start our engines for fallen Soldiers, and sometimes for Police Officers killed in the line of duty.
There are rumors that Phelps used to bite pillows when he was in college, but I never cared enough about him one way or the other to research into it. He always reminded me of the preacher in Poltergeist II.
These yahoos threatened to protest some of the funerals of the victims of the Va. Tech shooter last year. Then some folks (I don’t know who, really I don’t) made it clear what would happen to them if they showed up at a funeral in rural Virginia.
They decided not to protest that one.
A 40 cal has better knock down power, thus less rounds need to be sent. Less rounds expended for a single target, is friendlier for the environment. ;>)
As I said above I don’t support the Phelps, I despise thier activities. And I feel Biblically secure in judging them based on their fruits. They say they are doing the will of Christ. I judge them false on this because their fruits go against everything Jesus ever said.
I think Paul was talking locally. Remember, there were no mass communications in the 1st century. IIRC, Paul was chastising the particular church for taking squabbles between church members to Roman, and hence heathen, courts for settlement. And any member of the church that failed to live in accordance with God’s law was to be expelled from the congregation, ie excommunicated. It’s kinda hard to do that unless the church elders are allowed to judge the person on his conduct. Anybody who was outside the church, ie heathen idol worshippers, were to be ignored unless you were witnessing to them........
I feel much better. Thanks!
These people are slime and give Christians a bad name.
Thanks, netmilsmom. I didn’t feel like arguing with him anymore.
After reading some responses from FREEPERS today, I would not doubt that some would be joining Phelps and goons. There was some sick posts today. I was embarrased about them.
I suspect he may be a paid agent of the RATS, working to make Christians and anti-homosexuals look bad.
Shameless. Leave the dead alone; their families have enough grief without you jerks.
“I hold the suspicion that his religious protests are a ploy to slur the conservative Christian opposition to homosexuality.”
Thats what I believe. The left likes to fund real wackos so that they can position themselves as moderates.

I would not screw with Hollywood people either. Yes they seem laid back and peaceful but I guarantee that they won’t put up with this from them. Plus this really pisses me off because Hollywood already has a bad image of religious people and these freaks are not going to make it easier. Damn them!!! I hope some of those actors kick their butts.
No problem!
