The Constitution is Not a “Living, Breathing Document” (Fred fires back at Huck)
Fred08.com ^ | 18 Jan 2008 | Fred Thompson

Posted on 01/18/2008 12:43:08 PM PST by commish

This morning I heard that one of the other candidates commented that the Constitution is a “living, breathing document.”

Frankly, I assumed this came from Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. It is identical to what Al Gore said when he was running for President in 2000, when he said he would look for judges “who understand that our Constitution is a living, breathing document, that it was intended by our founders to be interpreted in the light of the constantly evolving experience of the American people.”

Imagine my surprise when I learned that this statement actually came from my opponent, Governor Huckabee, in an interview with CNN this morning. Now I know Governor Huckabee was talking about amending the Constitution, but I don’t think he understood that he was using code words that support judicial activism.

He does not appear to understand that reliance on the notion that the Constitution is a living, breathing document is precisely the kind of wrong-headed thinking about the Constitution that gave us Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion across our nation, and Lawrence v. Texas, which decriminalized sodomy.

I do not believe the Constitution is a living, breathing document. I am committed to appointing strict constructionist judges to the bench if I am elected President, strict constructionists who believe the Constitution has a fixed meaning that can be applied to cases that come before the courts today. They do NOT believe the Constitution is a “living, breathing document,” whose meaning, constantly changing with the sifting sands of our culture, can be determined and applied by unelected judges.

I fear that this loose language about our Constitution calls into question Governor Huckabee’s appreciation and understanding of the issue of judicial activism and raises questions as to what kind of judges he would appoint were he to become President.

Yep. Yesterday I was really down after seeing the latest round of SC polls, but it is things like this that make me realize that they just don't matter. Sure, I want Fred to win, but mostly I just want him to continue to be Fred and educate the idiots that are infesting this country.

I think a lot of us feel the same way. Rush enunciated this exact sentiment today. If our fellow Republican voters nominate one of the other “front-runners,” the Republican party has lost all of the important components of its base. We might as well have Hillary in the White House. As Rush said, it might have taken a Carter to get a Reagan. We will all be seething and hopefully planning.

But none of matters because the Huckster is an all-knowing evangelical Christian and as a result, we owe him our vote. /sarcasm.

I hope not but I did vote for Bob Dole (even though I was not certain he was electable).

I like Fred! I will vote for two or three of the others if they are nominated (even if I have to hold my nose to do so).

I WILL NOT VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN! and I am beginning to think Mike Huckabee is another one of these RINOs that I will be unable to get past the stench to bring myself to vote for either.

I believe it was thought that most Republicans despised James G. Blaine in 1884, but he was nominated, and he still almost beat Cleveland. Supposedly, young Theodore Roosevelt held his nose and voted for Blaine!

I fear you may be correct. Mclaim, Rooty, and Huckleberry are RINO's, and I don't trust the man (Romney) that got elected to run one of, if not the most, liberal states in the union.

The Republican party is on crack, and they may very well have to hit rock bottom before they decide it's time to sober up.

He said something a little iffy yesterday. Something about letting the economy take care of itself. Only heard FOX version. Not the quote. And it surely could be taken out of context. If he did say something like that, it's not helpful. even if it's essentially true. IT just feeds into the myth about him not really being a doer.

Other than that, I think everything I have heard him say. every thing that I have read, that he has written. Outstanding and right on spot.

I almost wish he’d say something I disagree with. He’s almost too good to believe.

Funny you should say that. When he was considering running, I read a little about him and decided I was for him, based on his positions. I'd seen him in movies but that was meaningless for me; I'd NEVER watched Law and Order; and in fact I was burned once by voting an actor into the Governor's mansion not long ago here in CA, so was a little untrusting of that career switch (Reagan notwithstanding). Only later did I learn that acting came to him, that he had not sought it at all.

So from then on, I told people I was thinking about this guy Thompson, at least until he disappointed me.

Well, I am still waiting for him to disappoint me. It seems that I become more impressed with him nearly on a daily basis. I pray he will make it through tomorrow.

No worries, if Huck, MYTH, or McINsane are the nominee lots of people will still vote for them because they have a little R next to their name.

And if one of those 3 weasels actually wins we get to watch them work with the socialists to raise taxes, pull out of Iraq just before the mid terms and pass a universal health care mandate policed by the IRS.

And you thought Obama and Hillary were bad.

I don’t want to be correct. I want the hearts and minds of South Carolina Republicans to be motivated by what is best for our country, and to vote Fred Thompson tomorrow. I will be PRAYING. I fear, after what he said on Hannity, that he won’t go further if he comes in 3rd. We NEED him to keep going but he needs a good showing.

I just hope the voters there will stop being attracted by the shiny cross Huckster keeps dangling before their eyes!
