Pro-Huckabee Push-Poll Calls in South Carolina

Pro-Huckabee Push-Poll Calls in South Carolina

I'm getting multiple reports from Campaign Spot readers in South Carolina of push polls favoring Huckabee.

Here's one account:

My wife just answered a call that appears to be an automated push poll for the Huckster. It started out naming the Republican candidates starting with Huckabee and then asking if she intended to vote in the presidential preference primary. It then went through the candidates, one by one, asking if she would vote for that candidate. When she said "Yes" to Fred, she was asked if she knew that Fred was for this and against that—issues where Fred took the opposite side from Huck (and including the old BS that he lobbied for a company that was pro-abortion.) In each case, the "polls" aim was to make Huck look good and Fred look bad. She hung up before getting to the end and didn't hear who paid for the "poll."

The description of the call sounds like the ones being done by Common Sense Issues — a tax-exempt group registered in Delaware.

It looks like the Huckabee isn't such an innocent campaigner after all. I wonder how he would like it if someone would push poll letting people know he let murderers and rapists out of jail? I'm sure some Christian supporters would have to ask themselves "Would Jesus vote for a guy who let killers out of jail?"

Here is a site I found that is running ads in SC: www.victimsvoice527.com

Apparently, the Huckabee push-polling has been going on since before Iowa. It’s the ugliest side of politics.

I haven’t heard of any other candidates doing it this year.

What are you hearing, sensing, for Fred in SC? Polls don’t look great- but they’re not so reliable these days. I’m thinking the people in SC have more common sense than to fall for Huckabee or McCain.

No matter what anybody thinks about NPR, they asked Huck this morning about the push polling. Of course he claimed no role in it and said he had made a public plea for it to be stopped.

Don’t know.

This is just as low as a campaign can get. You just knew that guy couldn’t be trusted.....based on his past behavior.

I got the call too. Made me vow not to vote for the huckster even if he is the nominee. I WILL VOTE AGAINST him if he’s on the ballot in November, and I know the consequences of that.

I was at an event in Pawleys Island, SC tonight. Although the candidates weren’t there, they had someone speak for them, with the exception of Huckster, his guy didn’t show up. Some local guy spoke for RuPaul, James Woolsey (former CIA director) spoke for McCain, a local woman spoke for Mitt, a retired General spoke for Duncan Hunter and George Allen spoke for Fred.

I was helping man the Thompson table and we had quite a few people come up and ask for yard signs, bumper stickers, etc. These were people who had changed their minds to Fred. A very good sign!!!!

BTW, I got one of these calls today - it was absolutely disgusting!

I just googled that phone number. Wow. The Huck crowd has been busy....since Iowa. Then Michigan, to lie about Mitt. Guess Fred is the one they are after now.

Pitiful.

FRed is busting his ass here in SC, doing multiple appearances each day. Overflow crowds are the rule rather than the exception. It appears FRed can really connect and impress people if he can do it in person. This works well here, but will not work at all come Super Tuesday. His campaign methodology will have to change before then. Around Aiken where I live I see more FRed bumper stickers and yard signs than the other guys.

Thank you for the report:) We know Fred’s best at retail- but he can come up with some good ads for Super Tuesday.

Huckabee really worries me in South Carolina. Between the push polling and playing to conservative Crhistians...

Fred and McCain had the most supporters there. Paul had none (no one admitted it anyway...LOL), Mitt had a few, there were a few for Guiliani and hardly any for the huckster. All in all, it was a wonderful night to be a Fred supporter.

We were the only group had any presence passing out buttons, stickers, yard signs, etc. Some of the other campaigns had stuff sitting on tables but there weren’t any people manning them actually talking to the folks!!! Made Fred’s campaign look a whole lot more professional. We were standing outside (it was very cold and damp) greeting people and handing every person who went in a Fred flyer and other stuff if they wanted it and we opened the door for everyone....yeah!

I swear there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t detest this man even more. Just when I think my estimation of him can’t possibly get any lower, he either does something or I learn something new about him that makes me shake my head in disbelief that a significant fraction of the Republican electorate still thinks him worthy of the Presidency.

PLEASE....anyone thinking about voting for this guy....if you haven’t looked into his background and views closely, please take the time to do so.

This is a bad, bad guy. I WILL vote 3rd party if he gets the nomination.

Hank

That’s a really good question. I don’t know.

Do you belong to a local church who may have your number? Do you have your name and phone # on a Republican list? I’m not sure what the law is regarding the do not call list and political calls..

I don't care what candidate does this but if they make calls under the guise of a poll as opposed to the role of advocacy, I've got a big problem.

I will consider talking to someone that is up front about advocacy. I won't allow someone to treat me like an idiot. Whether Huckabee is behind this or not the true turning point for me in not considering The Huck was that dishonest press conference when he showed the ad he wasn't going to air to a roomfull of the press.

BTW3, Huckabee cannot force them to stop, any more than anyone else.

I call BS on this. If the push polling is specifically to help one candidate and that candidate says "stop it now", why would they continue against that candidate's wishes? Either the candidate hasn't tried to stop them or he publicly disavows them while secretly imploring them to continue.

If I were a candidate who had a company push-polling on my behalf, I would file suit against them to stop if I truly wanted them to stop and they refused. Whose campaign is it, anyway?

Politicians exempted themselves from the Do Not Call law (typical!) and most political machines can get your phone number through criss-crossing and voter registrations. This is a hot-button for me as I despise telemarketers and receive political telemarketers with the same venom. May they rot in Hell.

it is a call that follows the basics of ethical salesmanship.

The clips I heard never mentioned a poll, but there is absolutely nothing ethical about lying in a sales pitch. In the recorded message I heard, the person talking stated that Huckabee was endorsed by the Minutemen. That's an absolute lie.

I can understand a possible slip of the tongue on a campaign stump, but a pre-recorded message that makes claims like that is an intentional lie.

BTW, if it doesn’t state it is a poll, it is a call that follows the basics of ethical salesmanship.

I got two of these calls yesterday. They start out by asking if you would be willing to participate in a 45 second poll. If you listen through to the end they state that they are not endorsed by any candidate and identify themselves as American Sense Issues. Caller ID is DC Suburb, Va. 571-839-6569

If you get one of these calls please do not hang up and go through the entire call. The time it spends with you is that much it isn't calling someone else.

I just came across this- it’s of interest in light of your reception in Pawleys Island yesterday..I have wondered about this strategy also- I think Fred could do better than expected in Low Country:

Low Country, Big Crowd

One of my recurring questions about the Thompson campaign effort in South Carolina is whether the candidate is hitting the right parts of the state, particularly the Low Country. He’s done a few more stops in the region in recent weeks, but I wonder if somebody on his team is underestimating the number of votes he could win in a fairly populous region.

One of his guys pointed out to me that the retiree-laden region has a lot of transplanted yankees. Indeed, but “yankee” isn’t synonymous with “liberal”, and you don’t move to South Carolina because you want to hang out with the hippies
