Each Candidate perform a salute at the next debate.
lol. Don’t be surprised if some of the candidates actually perform a salute like that. Ron Paul comes to mind for some reason. Maybe Huckster too.
It work so well for John Kerry, why not?
Unless they are the actual Commander in Chief I’d prefer that they not salute.
There are different salutes and differing rules on saluting from the different services. Army, and I believe Air Force, can salute indoors without a head covering, but Navy and Marines cannot, unless under arms. When a civilian politico does it in front of cameras it looks disingenuous and tacky....
Less than 8% of all living Americans have served in the military. This is meaningless, although I to cringe when I see a non veteran attempt to render a salute.
In the Navy, if your under arms, you’re covered.
The best saluters will be Duncan Hunter followed by or equal with John McCain. No two ways around it.
Here's your example......
That’s what I said.....

Sorry, but Fred Thompson doesn’t do a show of hands of any kind.
Personally I would like to see who can dance the best.
That’s going to be important if the GOP wants to compete against Obama for the youth vote.
I've noticed that folks that were in "a long time ago" don't salute the way we do now. Look a old films of WWII. Now, salutes are more standard and sharper.
On another note, John Kerry's salute at his convention was the sloppiest ever!
How about we demand mandatory military service for every young American Citizen starting at age 18? A two-year tour to start, then they can re-up or go on to college. The wash-outs won’t be any worse off.
That would accomplish far more for America than if a candidate for office can salute properly or not.

Wow! Less than 8 percent of all living Americans? That is tragic. What is wrong with all the selfish Americans? I can’t believe that dismal percentage.
Rules change over time and types of salutes are no different. I like the old Roman salute, fist to the chest and then palm extended..........
Somehow I don’t see the point in evaluating candidates based upon their level of ability to perform a practiced hand gesture.
Well, that’ll kill a few minutes and contain as much substance as any of their other answers. God forbid we demand they spend the time actually giving serious answers to questions of consequence. And think of all the wonderful articles dedicated to how people salute! Just like some years ago when they dedicated articles to how one candidate’s signature changed over the years.

I would go with that, but I do know that many in the military do not want that because it brings in too much rift raft.
I know, it comes as a shock too many people to learn this.
Thats why I never give much credence to those that want to insist military service is a ‘first requirement’.
That viewpoint eliminates 92% of the entire population from running, with is ridiculous.
And I say this as a Vet, btw.

I understand your thoughts on that, but they are going to have to perform them MANY times while they are president so why not give them a stab.
I know how to salute -- remove my hat if I'm wearing one, and place my right hand over my heart. That's a civilian's salute. i haven't earned the right to give a military salute.
Excellent point of view.

We have only had one President who does not have military service and look what they got us. I think it should be pretty up in the priorities if possible, but not a killer.
When a civilian politico does it in front of cameras it is disingenuos and tacky (and self serving, and ego centric, and exceedingly ballsy, especially for those who did not serve in the military)
‘We have only had one President who does not have military service and look what they got us.’
Jimmy Carter is a Vet....(chuckle)
Its not that reliable of an indicator.
A good snappy salute would be nice. Let’s see ... that’s number 927 on my list of priorities for what makes a good President.
I don’t think John McCain is physically able to do so. Bob Dole could not, either. Given the circumstances of their injuries, I will not hold this against them, if that’s all right with you.
John Adams
Thomas Jefferson
John Quincy Adams
Martin Van Buren
Grover Cleveland
William Taft
Woodrow Wilson
Warren Harding
Calvin Coolidge
Herbert Hoover
Franklin Roosevelt
Bill Clinton
Well the Huckster tap dances around questions pretty darn well. He just might win the dance competition.
Very few in congress would go for that.
And examined objectively Carter’s service was more impressive than Reagan’s.
And like I mentioned last night Hitler and Mussolini saw hard combat in WWI and Hitler seems to have well-earned several medals.
People need to get over this obsession with military service as the be-all-and-end-all of candidates. It’s not a Constitutional requirement, and for good reason.
We've had a whole lot more than that. FDR, Hoover, Coolidge, Harding, Taft, Wilson, Cleveland, Van Buren, and both Adams were never in uniform.
Second-from-the-left is making a fine show of it. Good form...
Of course not. CongressCritters have an inbred “entitlement mentality.” It’s not just everyday liberals that suffer from that malady. ;)
I’m only going to vote for someone if they can give the Vulcan salute.
And examined objectively Carters service was more impressive than Reagans.

Yep. Its ‘nice’ to have but not a requirement for good reason.
I don't think we need to reimpose the draft, but if we do, I agree it should be universal. Men and women, rich and poor, no exemptions, few deferments. 4-F? You can still man a desk. Teach in an inner-city school. Cook meals. Push a broom. Bring a glass of water to a wounded soldier at Walter Reed. Give an Iraqi kid candy and teach him English. Drive a battered wife to a shelter. Paint walls in public buildings. Pick up trash on highway shoulders and parks. No end of possibilities. The list of things young people can do and we need done is not a short list.
I say few deferments deliberately -- let a med student finish his degree before he serves. He'll be more useful as a doctor. Ditto engineers, veterinarians, even lawyers -- hell, someone's got to sign on for JAG. But unless you're so physically and/or mentally disabled that you can't perform any useful work, you do your stretch. That means the Bush Twins, the Gore Girls, Bill Gates's kids. No exceptions.
I repeat, I don't think we need a draft right now. But if it must be done, that's the way to do it.
And of those, none was an enlisted man.
Get out the super glue........
Besides, they rarely have children in the military.
Agreed.
Good one. If remember, Clinton didn’t know how to salute; but I will bet Hillary is practing right now. LOL

This pix is wrong on SO many levels, but I always have to post it whenever Spock is mentioned. :)
