BEIRUT, Lebanon — A blast rang out across Beirut on Tuesday, and a senior Lebanese security official said the explosion occurred just north of the city.
Gray smoke could be seen billowing near the Mediterranean coast, but the source of the explosion was not immediately known.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least three people were killed in an explosion in Beirut on Tuesday which wounded a passenger in a diplomatic car, security sources said, and Lebanon’s LBC television channel said a U.S. embassy car was hit.
Security sources said the explosion occurred in a Christian neighborhood of Beirut.
Witnesses said ambulances rushed to the scene, as smoke rose into the sky.
The blast was heard loudest in the Dora suburb in north Beirut, the sources and witnesses said.
Lebanon has seen more than 30 explosions in the past three years, many targeting anti-Syrian politicians and journalists. Last week a roadside bomb wounded two U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.

No doubt a belated “welcome” for President Bush.
Now they’re saying three people (at least) were killed. The car sure looks as if anybody who’d been riding in it would be dead now.
The Haaretz ticker is quoting Reuters as saying no Americans were killed in this.
That’s good! I wonder who was in the car then? I hope it wasn’t some Lebanese ally of ours that we were transporting from place to place. IIRC, the hostile forces there are pretty good at finding out details like that and targeting their killings respectively.

Yeah, like all of those “protested in the strongest terms” letters the State Department used to send Noriega when he’d detain one or more of us - I got to play in that mess and it was pretty laughable. The PDF sergeant who arrested me for riding my motorcycle while in uniform (perfectly legal) actually apologized to me WHILE arresting me! Sure felt the support from State when those letters got announced, lemme tell ya...

BEIRUT, Lebanon — An explosion targeted a U.S. Embassy vehicle Tuesday in northern Beirut, killing four Lebanese and injuring a local embassy employee just ahead of a farewell reception for the American ambassador, U.S. and Lebanese officials said.In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said two embassy employees — including the driver — were in the vehicle damaged in the blast, which could be heard across the Lebanese capital and sent gray smoke billowing near the Mediterranean coast.
The driver was slightly wounded and the other staffer is fine, McCormack told reporters. He said no American diplomats or American citizens were in the car.
"My understanding is there were four Beirut residents who do not work for the embassy who were killed in the blast," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.
A senior U.S. official, who was not authorized to release the information and spoke condition of anonymity, said no Americans injured or killed.

Let’s not get carried away. We need to take a deep breath and not overreact. Mixed case is probably still the measured response we need in the letter.

One thing’s for sure, they’re not the ones that General David Petraeus and our troops are fighting alongside of in Iraq against a common enemy. The General’s friends are Muslims, but they are fighting with US against the type of Muslims that blew up the car.

I was reading the foreign press and they said that the car that really got hit was the second car in the convoy. That must have been the one they showed in the photo. In the first car, there were 4 people, only one of whom was injured; the people who were killed were in the second car.
I wonder who they were?
