Flat, scrubby, too wet to walk on but too dry to fish, Minnesota's vast peatlands have long been regarded as good for almost nothing, including sightseeing.
But now, in an age of climate change, the bogs are the target of a security alert.
Experts fear that a warmer climate will speed the decomposition of peatland vegetation, which has been slowly decaying for 4,000 years. Carbon is naturally released as a byproduct of that decomposition, and the addition of an untold amount would cause the climate to warm even faster than it already is.
"Northern peatlands are the wild card in global warming," said Eville Gorham, a retired University of Minnesota Regents' professor of ecology who has studied peatlands around the world.
The Minnesota Climate Change Advisory Group will include peatland protection and restoration measures among the several dozen recommendations for blunting climate change that it will forward to Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Feb. 1. The strategies include raising the water table in peat country, preventing drainage, restoring areas that have been drained and urging that "best management practices" for other lands also apply to peatlands.

I know its a real global warming catastrophe when the peat bogs catch on fire but I never thought they would decay faster and cause out of control global warming. This decay smells like someone wants some grant money. I will put this one beside the Global Warming Cow flatulence cause.

The peat your talking about is a little more consistant to being cut into bricks so they can be used for fire.
The bogs up north are really nothing but an overgrown lake that has died many moons ago and grew over. I would bet that a good many mob hit has been hid under those bogs. All you got to do is chop a hole in the top and shove whatever you want to get rid of under and the peat would close up over the it.
I know of a bog that has a D8 cat in it. They were trying to get a pipeline across and the dozer was the tie for the dragline that was used to lower the pipe into the trench. The Dozer broke thru and after it was over they sounded the thing and found out it was down 89 feet. Its still there if anyone cares to try and get it out.
I believe this might prove the graphs that illustrate the increase in carbon actually follows the heating process verses being the causative factor. Of course when your job as an environmental reporter depends on ‘Chicken Little’ news, we will just ignore these little discrepancies.

That has happened many a time up there. In the 70s near Seney Mi they were fighting a fire there and the feds lost a couple of machines into peat bogs. There aint no way to get them out. Like quiksand..only its muck. When you walk on a floating bog you can see the bushes move many feet away from you. If its a black spruce bog the trees move as your walking. Ya kinda get this sick feeling in your gut while your out there.

I’m not sure if Minnesota bogs are anything that will have an effect. Now - farther north where bogs/peat is typically frozen and the carbon locked up - when they thaw it can increase the carbon output.
Maybe the guy that “has studied bogs all over the world” is just getting tired of all the traveling and wants to spend more time at his cabin up north.
Actually they know that bogs are rich in carbon as you said. The UofWI is supposed to be doing a study on that as we speak...I think MiTech is involved also.
They are up in Canada and are studying the effects of how much carbon is released into the air after the Canucks let VAST areas of the boreal forest burn each year.
