CES Asus today committed itself to expanding its Eee PC line-up not only with WiMax wireless broadband-enabled versions but also machines with 7, 8 and 8.9in displays. They'll appear in Q2, Asus said.
However, the anticipated second-gen Eee PC failed to make its anticipated appearance.
The larger screen size – rumoured for some time – will provide a resolution of 1024 x 600, Asus said. That addresses one of the chief limitations of the current, 7in Eee PC: its 800 x 480 resolution, which isn't too much of a problem for Linux, but doesn't play so well with Windows.
Future Eee PCs – those equipped with WiMax, for certain – will come pre-loaded with Windows XP. That's something Asus has promised before, but it's inevitable given the undoubted low level of Linux driver support for WiMax hardware, at least in the short term.
Asus' second-quarter timeframe isn't a surprise: that's when Intel has said it will ship its 'Echo Peak' WiMax module for Centrino laptops. That's not to say that the new Eee PCs will be Centrino-branded, but they will certainly deliver WiMax using Intel technology.
Other specs are less clear. Asus said it would stick with a “compact design”, but committed itself only to the use of solid-state storage, a webcam and “an intuitive user interface”.

It's available if anyone would like it. Still have original factory packaging and accessories too.
Regular 802.11G wireless is OK too, better yet 802.11N. What I DON'T want is a load of Microsoft. Linux, simplicity and economy are the keys.
If they jazz it up too much with Windows, Wimax and a big screen, what they will have is an entry-level subnotebook in a different class of machine.
I would be happy with the current 8GB black EeePC at a lower price. I just want to FReep and get my email with no Windows or Office trial version.
As you, I do not want Windoze, in fact I am selling my Visduh Windoze notebook with its interminable boot-up time in anticipation of buying one of these. From what I have read, only the second gen models with WiMax will have Windows OS. It appears to me that the non-WiMax units will still sport Linux.
For myself, the proposed 10" screen sounds more to my liking, which will also provide a bit larger keyboard. I can live with a little bit higher additional cost for the slightly larger unit, as long it is still Linux OS.
BTW, for your desired set-up, you could purchase the 8GB model, available now, and add an 8GB SD card, and voila, you have your 16GB you want.
The OS is not tied irrevocably to the hardware. Wipe out Vista and install a linux distro on it. That way you're not shoveling out money for new hardware.

I know how to and have reformatted our computers, but I have no experience with Linux, where to get the disks for it, how it works, where do I get the specific drivers the various hardware parts in my laptop would need to run Linux, (and if they are even available) and so on.
I thought about wiping Vista off the machine and installing XP, as I have an extra copy of it, but from everything I have been able to find out, because this is a farily new machine, the manufacturers of the various components of the laptop have not produced drivers for XP. Is there a site with an FAQ to learn and study all such obvious questions for a Windows to Linux conversion?

That sounds like a plan. I could just move all documents, pix, videos etc to the SD card and keep the flash drive clean.
I think the 8GB version will settle out around the $400 price point or lower as soon as the turbo deluxe models come out. I'll wait and see what happens.
I remember when the Xbox was unobtanium; people were hawking them on eBay before Christmas for ridiculous prices. Then after the Xbox 360 came out, I picked up an Xbox for $75. I can't afford to be a cutting-edge early adopter. I don't need a lot of apps on my portable. The EeePC is a remarkable, unique communication device for the common man, and I hope they continue to make the simple ones. It's less than a laptop, yet more than a smartphone. If it gets broken or lost, no big deal, get another one. And I can have a wireless laptop in my coat pocket with no Windows or bloat. Who's your daddy, Bill Gates? I got your WGA right...here.
