No Conservatives, Dammit!! (Bill Kristol and the Times)
City Journal ^ | 1/2/2007 | Harry Stein

Posted on 01/03/2008 1:32:07 PM PST by mojito

Here is just a tiny, tiny sample of the reaction on the Huffington Post to the announcement that William Kristol will be writing a weekly column in the New York Times:

“William ‘the Bloody’ Kristol is a beady eyed warmonger.”

“Worthless suck up Kristol should be cleaning toilets in public restrooms for his GOP ‘friends.’”

“I will never, ever, buy another issue of the newspaper, I will never again be a subscriber to your newspaper and I will do my level best to avoid any purchases from any NY Times advertiser.”

“If the New York Times is going to hire a liar and a racist like Bill Kristol then they might as well hire Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, Bill O’Reilly, and Ari Fleischer.”

“Kristol is an arrogant warmongering prick. I can’t stand the sight of him.”

“Listening to Kristol, that war mongering crater face, is worse than listening to Bush, Cheney, and Richard Pearle all rolled up in one . . . I hate that decision and I will do everything I can to discredit this decision until they finally flush him down the toilet like the turd he is.”

And so it went, on this and dozens of other left-of-center sites. Sputtering fury. Vicious name-calling. Denunciations of the Times for this unspeakable act. Threats to cancel subscriptions and otherwise exact revenge.

For conservatives, long accustomed to self-serving liberal pieties about tolerance, the orgy of outrage at having to face an alien point of view was wonderful to behold, and no one enjoyed it more than the man at the storm’s center. As Kristol put it to Politico.com, with the obvious relish of the skinny guy on the beach who gets the girl in the fourth panel, “I was flattered watching blogosphere heads explode.”

I know what many here think of Kristol's conservative credentials, but that aside, this is funny stuff. But you already knew what liberals are like.

Like... they understand that their ideology cannot stand when an opposing viewpoint is “allowed”?

Kristol can afford to write a weekly column for the NYT. He gets read via TWS, so the lack of visability isn’t a problem....(chuckle)

Here in Vermont, known conservatives have to sit at the back of the bus and drink from separate water fountains.

Welcome, Mr. Kristol, to the land of Jim Crow.

According to The Nation’s Katha Pollitt, “What this hire demonstrates is how successfully the right has intimidated the mainstream media. Their constant demonizing of the New York Times as the tool of the liberal elite worked.”

"The Nation". Now there's a good middle of the road place to look for a measured evaluation of any political issue.

This from the liberals who claim tolerance of all above all. I have tried to point out to my lefty friends that Fox News presents both sides politics. I can’t watch the alphabets as they are only hard left. But that’s what lefties want and that’s why they think they should win every political race. The papers, nightly news, etc. that they believe is all left all the time.

Bill Kristol isn’t very conservative. I’d love to see Ann Coulter in the NYT! Now that might make that rag worth buying!

It’s interesting that liberal commentary has begun to notice the dysfunctional rage of the left and wants to separate itself from it. Unlike global warming, BDS has reached a tipping point.

Funny. Nice piece of work.

As I’ve said elsewhere, the liberal MSM have dug themselves into a hole. The NY Times basically has no subscribers left but convinced leftists. Everyone else has been driven away.

So what are they to do? If they move right, and hire a few conservatives, they will enfuriate their current subscribers, but they are unlikely to gain many new ones. It’s still a lousy rag, worse every year. They used to have a lot of good wine experts, science experts, art and music experts, and so on. But almost all of those are gone too.

There’s hardly anything worth reading in the whole bloody newspaper. The style section is laughable. The Arts section is childish. The Book Review is so biased it’s pathetic—even if they are trying to “balance” it.

No one of sense will want to subscribe. So the best they can expect is to drive away the moonbats as well. How many people are going to pony up the price for a subscription so they can read Bill Kristol?

I’d rather go on-line and read an article like this.

You said it. Pinch picking up Kristol created a lot of hate and discontent among remaining NYT subscribers. This typical angry left wing nutter declares his formerly beloved darling Old Gray Lady who could do no wrong an Old Gray Nag while publicly divorcing her for cheating on him with William Kristol.

Man, they’d blow a gasket talking about a real conservative.

They don't know from "real" conservative since, for them, the term only refers to anybody to their right. The left's panic over America's continuing disillusionment with their century-long agenda has no limits. It's like the narcissist husband's inability to fathom why his wife wants a divorce.

"Actually, the comments in the article are no different than what I have read here on FR with regard to clearly Liberal leaning columnists."

I can't think of a national newspaper that is 100% conservative as the NYT is leftist. And you're wrong that liberals are disallowed here. If someone is polite and can make a case, they are welcome. In almost every example, liberals who do post here sign up, make some screeching noises or are hysterical, then never respond.

It’s not the lack of conservative opinions that makes lib rags like the Times awful. It’s their willful distortion or outright omission of important news events that condemns them. Printing the facts in their daily stories by their reporters would mean a lot more than a few conservative writers. Although it can’t hurt to have a few non-libs on the staff.
