Thompson Makes His Move
National Review Online ^ | 12/30/07 | Peter Robinson

Posted on 12/31/2007 4:55:47 PM PST by County Agent Hank Kimball

"Will Thompson’s talk move voters in Iowa? Does his campaign have the money to get it on the air? Throughout the state? Or even in a few of the most important markets? Beats me. But we have here a serious man, making a serious case—and doing so in the context of a campaign that has otherwise descended into mere caterwauling.

Even at this late hour, I wouldn’t count Fred out."

If Fred would have cut to the chase on his 17 minute Iowa video and just talked about the challenges facing our national security and laid out his foreign policy resume in under three minutes, then he could have been the Iowa upset surprise. But unfortunately he’s got a bunch of fools for campaign advisors and he rambled on for 8 minutes before even mentioning national security — long after most viewers ended the suffering.

The weather predictions for the Des Moines area Thursday are for clear skies and 20’s temperatures. This means organized efforts by out of stater people to get their people to the caucuses will not encounter poor weather. Poor weather would have left out of state folks stuck off the side of the roads in snow and locals, accustomed to it, getting where they are going.

This probably will have more impact on results than any campaigning between now and Thursday.

Any indication of size or enthusiasm of crowds on Fred’s bus tour? Can’t seem to find much on Fred anywhere.

Thompson will be out after NH. He’s running out of money and his heart was never in this campaign. And it’s too bad because he’s probably the best person in the race.

It’s Romney or McCain folks, choose up sides. I will never, ever vote for McCain, he’s stabbed us in the back too many times.

That leaves Romney, a liberal Governor of Taxachusetts as the nominee of the conservative party. Go figure.

How do you know that Fred is running out of money? Please explain. I also don’t think Fred would be running if his heart was not in it to serve the country. Many do believe he is the best person in the race because he is the only REAL conservative who has a chance of winning the Republican nomination! Thursday evening we will know the choice of the Iowa voters. I hope the Iowa conservatives pick the best man, Fred Thompson! GO FRED!

Thompson should never have said that his heart wasn’t in politics.

Yes, I’ll concede that it was taken a bit out of context, but it was the last thing a veteran politician should have said in any context, and certainly not Fred with the longstanding criticism of his unenthusiastic campaign.

This is a sales presentation in a business where a person has to build a relationship with many voters. Huckabee and Romney are like mass-marketed products which may or may not prove serviceable. Fred respects his market. Let us see if they are worthy of that respect; not that they necessarily vote for Fred, but that they start thinking longer-term about what is going on.

That seems a bit tortured to me.
The formula is really not that complicated.
People want a nominee they can tout in the general election as the most deserving of the office, and the most important factor in that is having the right background and being highly qualified in matters important to national policy.

Fred is, but he has been downplaying his qualifications.
The end result is people either never find out about them, or they get the impression from Fred that he doesn’t have a lot of confidence in his own experience. I think that after people vote for the wrong guy and then they learn about Fred’s resume afterwards, they will be angry and say “why didn’t he tell us about this?”

In December of 2008, MSNBC, ABC, CNN, Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Sheehan, and McCain will begin begging & campaigning/shuckin' & jivin' for the 2011 Democratic primaries, for the chance to run against the newly elected President, Fred Thompson, in November 2012.

you know? This man is growing on me. When I heard that he had disdain for “President Seekers” I actually got tears in my eyes. This thing is going to the convention for final decision. My Dad told me “When this country really needs it, God finds the man” . I am 63 so my Dad was talking FDR but Reagan was the man we needed. God had been away for a while but boy do we need him now because we are in one hell of a mess.

Iowa campaign office reporting:

Standing room only every stop of Thompson’s bus tour.

Significant increase in number of media people attending the events—the guy didn’t want to put a number on it but when I pressed further his rough approximation indicated that increase in media people is likely to be at least doubled from start of tour.

When asked about progress office staff comment: “The needle is moving.” “Call response is getting better.” “When you get people in a room with Fred, he’s a closer.” “Fred’s more than a 30 second sound bite.”

Some probably do. We don't. Today I had calls from McCain, Romney and Paul. I asked the very nice young man who called for Romney if I answered his question if he would answer one for me. He said he would so I asked him what kind of responses he was getting on his polling. He said he just began calling a short time ago but it was going pretty good for Romney.

I had a feeling it may not have been going ultra good or he would have told me.

But Fred needs to develop a 30 second foreign policy sound bite.
He should save the rambling 17 minute speeches about conservatism for the campaign appearances.

No calls from Fred?
Is Fred pushing national security and his foreign policy resume in Iowa?

It seems to me that he hasn’t been, but should be. Making that his issue would be the winning formula I believe. People know he’s conservative already. That’s the kind of thing they look into on their own. What they don’t know is all the workgroups he’s chaired on terrorism and nuclear proliferation matters.

When Fred speaks in person on his tour stops, he talks extensively about his qualifications and experience. Every time.

Unfortunately, the people outside of Iowa really don’t have a feel for what’s going on. I’ve been to three “Meet Fred” events and I can guarantee you he is winning hearts and minds at every single stop.

Iowa campaign office reporting:

“People are just pouring out to come see him.”

“We had an entire restaurant in the little town of Tama packed full last night, and this has been happening across the state.”

Staff member also says there’s been an increase in both the number of media and general public.

Fred has made sixty stops so far in fifteen days.

You seem to (incorrectly) believe that National Security is the #1 issue in voters minds, when infact its currently not a one-all die-all issue. The vast majority of people do not go through their entire day worrying about bombs blowing up. They are working, paying their bills, putting food on the table, saving for their retirement, and trying to enjoy their lives without pesky presidential wanna-be dreamers pestering them during suppertime.

Fred is playing it perfectly.

We just have to put our hearts together and pray that IOWA and NEW HAMPSHIRE realize that their decisions will affect all of us here in areas where we have practically no voice in the selection process. May GOD place his hands of wisdom on your hearts to make the right choice for WE THE PEOPLE!

FRED THOMPSON is the absolutely perfect alternative to any other candidate. FRED should be every voters first choice, however, FRED would appreciate your support and if he happens to be your second choice, take one more look and read one more article and move FRED to your first choice. Create your arguments for FRED prior to the caucus you will be attending. Gather articles, take your laptop, come to FreeRepublic and we will steer you to evidence that FRED is the right choice for AMERICA! BE BOLD FOR US WITH NO VOICE!

GOD Bless you ALL and HAPPY NEW YEAR! May God guide us to the right decisions for the leadership of our Country.

FRED THOMPSON - NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERT (I’ll protect the American people and American values, whatever it takes to stop the Islamic-Fascists including water-boarding) - 2ND AMENDMENT ADVOCATE (’arming the People to disarm criminals and making available to the general populace superior weaponry to deal with domestic terrorists where ever and whenever they may be found)

INCREASE THE MILITARY’S STRENGTH AND SIZE (giving those brave men and women a Commander in Chief to be proud of)

SECURE AND SEAL THE BORDERS (don’t give sanctuary anywhere to illegal’s, don’t employ illegal’s, don’t rent to illegal’s, don’t extend credit to illegal’s, don’t give illegal’s rights they don’t deserve, report all crimes committed by illegal’s and deport those illegal’s who have already committed crimes against America)

LAW AND ORDER (enforcement first and foremost with laws currently on the books) – DENY FEDERAL DOLLARS TO SANCTUARY CITIES (enough is enough)

CONSERVATIVE JUSTICES FOR SUPREMES (those who will interpret the law, not create rights that do not exist) – PRO-LIFE ADVOCATE (nominate superior Constitutional Justices to overturn Roe vs Wade)

SOCIAL SECURITY REFORMER (reform a broken program that can’t sustain itself and will bankrupt future generations, with the added benefit of private savings accounts)

DEFEAT ANY DEMOCRAT AND RINO (any fool DemocRATS put up)

TAX SIMPLIFICATION (variety of choice for the tax payer)

WON’T PUT UP WITH CRAP FROM THE MSM (including stupid questions by moderators and pundits) –

“WE THE PEOPLE” CANDIDATE (We the People asked him to run and he stepped up) - PING!

All three have been in Davenport. Standing room only. My rough count at the last two was right at 150+ in attendance.

As far as the press, I believe just one TV station present at the first two. However, his last visit to Davenport brought three or four local Quad Cities television stations.

I think, and hope, that Fred is going to have a much better showing in the caucuses than what the polls and national media would have people think.
