The Battle for Independents (Bloomberg Prepares for Presidential Run)
New York Post ^ | 12/31/07 | DAVID SEIFMAN in New York and DAPHNE RETTER in Washington

He's frustrated with Washington gridlock and has money to burn - and next week, Mayor Bloomberg will meet with well-connected Democrats and Republicans who could help launch him as an independent presidential candidate.

The Jan. 7 meeting at the University of Oklahoma will include an array of current and former politicians who aren't considering a run on their own but who just might get behind someone with the clout and cash to join the fray at this late date.

"It is not a gathering to urge any one person to run for president or to say there necessarily ought to be an independent option," Democratic former Sen. David Boren, now president of the University of Oklahoma, told The Washington Post, which first reported the meeting yesterday.

"But if we don't see a refocusing of the campaign on a bipartisan approach, I would feel I would want to encourage an independent candidacy."

Other attendees will include Democratic former Sens. Sam Nunn (Georgia) and Sen. Chuck Robb (Virginia), and Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.

Would be an interesting race if his money backed some combination of Boren, Robb, Nunn and Hagel against Mrs. Clinton and Rudolph.

This group seems to be comprised of quite a few Southern/Western democrats who probably can’t stand to see the way their party has gone loony lefty.

"Bipartisan" is merely code for Conservatives rolling over and letting Dums have their way without a fight. It's tailor made for the nimrods who believe it makes them appear intellectual to say, "I look at the man and not the party when I cast my vote".

But taking the middle out this go-around could prove to be interesting. I have a feeling many hard-core Democrats suffer from ABH (Anybody But Hillary)syndrome, so an Independent run might actually pull more of them this time than it would from our side.

Then one has to consider the cheat factor and the fact that they've gotten extremely good at manufacturing votes.

These are Democrats in states that have gone GOP and want to siphon off Independent/Reagan Democrat votes in order to get Hillary elected.

I’m not seeing any interest for Bloomberg in the blogosphere.

Bloomberg is a limousine liberal infected with megalomania. His record in NYC is feeble, not much more than a caretaker.

He has a repulsive personality. Bipartisan to him means worship me.

It would be good if he runs. He’d be cut to ribbons as the puffed up nanny he is.

All I get from reading this and the many other posts on the same topic is that these moderates say bi-partisanship is an end to itself. They don't say bi-partisanship is needed to solve any particular problem, but only that it is needed because they want it.

My question is: Why do they want it?

Bloomberg/Nunn will be a formidable ticket.

They will siphon off enough independent/Reagan Democrat swing votes from the GOP to get Hillary elected.

This is the greatest group of wishy washy has beens assembled in history. The Dems will never win with a majority. Bill won with 42% because of Perot.

No one is seriously going to vote for this guy in any numbers, but Hillary can’t afford to lose NY to Giuliani. It would not only lose her this election, but poison her as a candidate forever. She can escape the stigma of losing the red state of Arkansas because it’s really not her home, but she would never shake the stigma of not winning her “home” state NY.

Bloomberg would not touch Hillary’s socialist supporters, but would siphon off some of the “moderate” Democrats that would vote for Rudy.

If Rudy looks like he won’t get the nomination, then these guys will melt away. Bloomy didn’t get rich by pouring money down the drain. For this reason, I propose we call them Democrat/ Republicans Alligned in Name Only (DRAINO’s)

There are a billion reasons why Bloomberg wants to run for President, and every one has George Washington’s picture on it.

Dude, quit panicking. I've told you before Bloomberg adds NOTHING to this race. Independent voters are far more educated than they were in 1992. Bloomberg is a statist and once these people see him for what he is, they'll dismiss him and go back to supporting either the Dem or Republican.

While getting ready to go the office this morning and watching a little blurb about this on Fox, my wife responded with a very sincere, “...who is Michael Bloomberg?” She genuinely had no clue who he was. This is a great example of what the national response will be.

Not another Rockfeller Republican... I really can’t see who Bloomberg even appeals to.

Bloomberg adds nothing if it is Clinton v Rudy.

Bloomberg adds a lot if it Obama v Huck.

Bloomberg also adds a lot if the Ron Paul extremist coalition takes off.

Forget Dems and Pubs, it could boil down to a coalition of the moderate right and left versus a coalition of far right and left. Moderates/elitists versus extremists/populists

DRAINO's a good moniker for these people.

As you pointed out, this is about New York. Many have posted here that Bloomberg's run would go virtually unnoticed by the rest of the country. While that is true, it misses the whole point of Bloomberg's entry. It's not just about New York, it's ALL about New York and nothing more. The dynamics of a Bloomberg third party run will surely play far differently in New York than here in Ohio.

It also is not directed solely against Giuliani, but against any GOP who emerges victorious from the primary. It's all about siphoning only New York RINOS, independents and cross-over dems from the GOP standard-bearer.

And you don’t think it will attract the moderate NY Dems who WILL NOT vote for “America’s ex-wife” under any circumstances ?

Of course he will get many of the moderate Dems - making it a toss-up between the Republican and the Democrat.
