Miss. congressman to replace Sen. Lott
By JACK ELLIOTT JR., Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago
Republican Haley Barbour's choice to succeed Sen. Trent Lott is Rep. Roger Wicker, a conservative congressman, congressional officials with knowledge of the selection process said Monday.
Wicker, 56, will serve until a special election is held, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made. Wicker is expected to be a candidate in the special election, which Barbour has scheduled for Nov. 4.
Wicker had been mentioned as a possible successor since Lott's resignation this month after serving one year of a six-year term. Lott's term runs through 2012.
Barbour was to announce Wicker's appointment later Monday.
Wicker also was resigning from the U.S. House.
Wicker was elected to the U.S. House in 1994 to succeed the late Rep. Jamie Whitten. He has been re-elected six times from the 1st District in north Mississippi.

Senators and Congressmen that decide to up and quit in the middle of their terms should be held personally responsible for the cost of any special election.
Mississippi ping
Wicker is my rep and he is a good one! I hope Flowers from the State Senate runs and wins his seat.
District is extremely conservative, with minus Marshall (my old home county) and Benton will all vote Republican. Desoto county with all of the white flight from Memphis will choose the new rep.
Senator Kay Baily Hutchinson of Texas is going to do the same thing. Governor Perry will select a republican to replace her.
I don’t have a rep. I am in the Second district.
Bless your heart! :-}
Happy and Safe New Year,
Wiley
I believe there is NO special election for a senate vacancy..it occurs at the next regular two year election cycle...in this case 2008..and the winner serves for the remainder of the original term. Only House seats are filled by special elections..
Indeed...
Heh heh...
I hope this report isn’t correct. Gov. Barbour’s press conference begins in 12 minutes, so we’ll know for sure then.
I ask this out of ignorance: Is Haley Barbour another low life politician?
(Need I ask when it comes to politicians? But I thought I would throw the dice anyway.)
(I hope this report isnt correct.)
Well it is.
Haley’s good people.
Too bad it wasn’t Chip, but since he withdrew from consideration, Haley made the best possible pick.
Yeah, I just watched Wicker accepting at the press conference.
I think it was a huuuuge mistake for a governor that has made very few mistakes in his political career. Roger Wicker is in bed with the most corrupt and anti-American elements of Puerto Rican politics, going as far as appearing with Ted Kennedy in a commercial for liberal Democrat Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá (who has spoken out in favor of members of separatist terrorist groups) when he ran for governor of Puerto Rico in 2004, and then defending Acevedo-Vilá in the editorial pages after he stole the election by getting overvotes counted for him; I hope that Governor Acevedo-Vilá does not return the favor by endorsing Wicker from his jail cell (Acevedo-Vilá will almost certainly be indicted for corruption by a federal grand jury within the next couple of months). I didn’t think that it was possible for a Republican Senator from Mississippi to be more disloyal to Republican principles than was Trent Lott, but sometimes good men like Governor Barbour get really, really bad advice.
I’ll just trust Haley on this one.
I appreciate your response.
Thank you.
I thought I would share the following with you:
- Mark Twain’s Autobiography
No matter how healthy a man’s morals may be when he enters the White House, he comes out again with a pot-marked soul.
- quoted in My Father Mark Twain, Clara Clemens
History has tried hard to teach us that we can’t have good government under politicians. Now, to go and stick one at the very head of the government couldn’t be wise.
- New York Herald, 8/26/1876
In other words, as a lot of know, politicians are lower than low life.
a lot of know = a lot know
sorry.
Me to!
There’s no special election here. Wicker was appointed by the governor.
I hesitate to say this, since I hate to paint whole states with a broad brush, but when I see that a state is consistently in the top 5 in the ratio of federal dollars received to dollars paid in federal taxes, I’m not surprised when some dirty dealing is going on in that state.
Incidentally, we’re gonna go through this kabuki theater again in a couple years; no way Thad finishes his term.
$hit. BAD choice.
Not good at all. :-\
Hell, even Eddie Briggs would’ve been a better choice.
Wicker's a vast improvement upon Lott though.
What are the chances that the corporate lobbyists and LULAC will corrupt him?
If he espouses the same pro-amnesty and anti-speech clap trap as Lott after he's actually been elected to the seat then this change will be pointless.
The push for Puerto Rican statehood and quasi-independence for Hawaii really disturbs me.
It's almost like our senators are in the employ of a foreign government.
Reminds me of the Capitol Hill portion of that fantastic documentary, Border.
Am I alone in this observation?
I spoke with Wicker about this and there was more to it. IMO Wicker is clear of any accusations. Your previous statements were forwarded to Wicker’s office and were rebuked to my satisfaction.
Interesting.
It sure makes you wonder how a small, low-life state like Mississippi consistently receives those federal dollars when the control of those federal dollars rests in the hands of how many other congressman, senators, and one president at a time. Hmmmmmmmmm. Mississippi has how many congressmen and how many senators? It’s amazing what kind of arm-twisting those seven people manage when the federal budget is negotiated!
“I spoke with Wicker about this and there was more to it. IMO Wicker is clear of any accusations. Your previous statements were forwarded to Wickers office and were rebuked to my satisfaction.”
For those of us trying to learn about the guy your post isn’t very helpful, especially since it’s purpose was to serve as a rebuttal.
Can’t you post the response?
How is Wicker on issues involving illegal immigration?
“It sure makes you wonder how a small, low-life state like Mississippi “
What is that supposed to be about?

I second the motion. Doug, could you at least give us a hint as to what Wicker's excuse was for endorsing an anti-American, liberal Democrat crook such as Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá for governor and actually appearing in a commercial with Ted Kennedy in support for Acevedo-Vilá's candidacy?
BTW, I found on YouTube the video of that commercial that Wicker cut for Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá. Notice the other members of Congress endorsing Acevedo-Vilá: Ted Kennedy, Bob Menendez, Jack Murtha, Xavier Becerra, Jim Oberstar and James Clyburn---it's like a who's who of liberal Democrats. Wicker's role in the commercial is, as a Republican endorsing him, to make Acevedo-Vilá appear to be a moderate instead of an ultraliberal. I would really like to hear Wicker's explanation for his apostasy in going along with Fat Teddy, Baghdad Jack Murtha and others and cutting a commercial for a defender of members of terrorist groups (such as Filiberto Ojeda of the Macheteros, the terrorist group responsible for countless deaths during the 70s and 80s). Anyhow, here's the video of the one-minute commercial:

It’s my home state. I love the place. Wish we were able to live there with the most charitable people in the country.
It was sarcasm. Big time.
“It’s almost like our senators are in the employ of a foreign government.”
Given the amount of Chinese money that must be awash in our federal political system, not to mention money from other sources, this probably is one part of the picture.
Oh, sorry.
Leaving aside the insincerity of Obama-who would just as soon outsource our domestic policy to Mexico-he did have a point.
I know India is our ally in a lot of areas, but I want American presidents to work for Americans, not Indians, or CCP prinelings in Red China, or bureaucrats in Brussels running the EUSSR.
It's really disturbing when you look at this presidential field and realize that there's only one-maybe two, if you include that fruitcake Alan Keyes-candidate who is actually competing for the votes of Americans.
I gotta correct my post. MS lost a congressional seat somewhere along the way, and they only have 6 folks to arm twist the other 530 folks in DC (not counting the POTUS and VPOTUS.)
It is a good reward. But more important, it will be fresh spine to the Senate where too long Lott ran cover for the Rats and the RINOs.
That’s ok. I probably should have made it clear it was sarcasm for those who don’t know me.
“Its my home state. I love the place.”
Double oh, at least I annoyed you in a good way, sticking up for your state.
For his career he seems to have an unimpressive grade, somewhere between sixty and seventy according to Americans For Better Immigration.
For the past three or four years it's improved significantly though.
I still wouldn't have taken a chance on this guy, especially when you had a sterling congressman like Pickering waiting in the wings.
It makes you wonder what kind of backroom deals led Barbour to make this appointment.
How about if you let the rest of us get a general idea of who the man is before you blast off on your single issue pet peeve.
I might end up agreeing with about his Puerto Rico stance, but first I would just like to find out who he is and the reasons that Barbour chose him.
Roger Wicker’s record as a Congressman is out there for all to see. He’s actually had a fairly conservative voting record, with a career ACU rating of 91.5 (a bit lower than Trent Lott), although he has not been very good at cutting the size of government (which is not atypical for members of the Appropriations Committee, where pork is king). However, this is Mississippi, and there are plenty of other candidates who are even more conservative than Wicker and who would have just as good a chance of winning the general election, and none of them have made a concerted effort to campaign in favor of a corrupt, anti-American, liberal Democrat.
I hope GOP voters in Mississippi get a choice in the primary. While Congressman Chip Pickering (my first choice) has recently expressed his lack of interest in the Senate seat, I believe that there are plenty of other conservative Republicans in the state who would be more trustworthy than Wicker in the Senate.
Wicker is definitely still an improvement over Senator Lott on the illegal immigration issue. I’m also still waiting for Senator Craig to finally retire so that Lt. Governor Jim Risch can hopefully replace him in the U.S. Senate in Idaho. The more “anti-amnesty for illegal immigrants” U.S. Senators and the more “anti-amnesty for illegal immigrants” U.S. House members, the better it truly will be for the long-term future of the entire U.S. and for the successful defeat of long-term socialism from becoming part of the U.S.!
