(Bill Press) Death of the Religious Right
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 12/30/07 | Bill Press

Posted on 12/30/2007 8:35:12 AM PST by imd102

No matter who becomes the next president of the United States, the American people have already won a great victory -- with the total disintegration of the once all-powerful Religious Right....

Today, the religious right has splintered into as many different factions as O.J. Simpson has alibis. Unable to find one candidate who fits the bill of being both true-blue on the issues and electable, America's ayatohlahs have divided their loyalties. Indeed, in some cases, they've even declared war against each other. The National Right to Life League has endorsed Fred Thompson, even though he opposes a constitutional amendment to ban Roe v. Wade and admits he goes to church only when visiting his mother.

James Dobson says he's not even sure Thompson qualifies as a Christian....

And, in one of the most bizarre pairings in politics, Pat Robertson, who blamed gays for Sept. 11 and prayed for a meteor to strike Disney World's gay pride parade, has endorsed Rudy Giuliani -- perhaps because he's counting on Giuliani to assassinate Hugo Chavez....

Merely entertaining Giuliani as a candidate demonstrates that, for many conservatives, political power counts more than Christian values. The Religious Right is dead. It never again will exercise the political clout it once had -- which is bad news for Republicans but good news for the republic....

He’s one of the most hateful and vicious men ever born. Press was born in the wrong place and time. He would have enjoyed being with Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin in the Bolshevik Revolution.

He must be a truly miserable and unhappy man.

Stupid liberal..Fred is a Federalist about abortion.

Guess what godless Nellie, church happens even when you infiltrate and rip down the brick walls. So sorry to inform you that you don't have to go to a "Church" to worship God. Jesus did it out in the middle of nowhere.

While in the long term, some moderate Republicans might welcome relief from having to genuflect in front of the pro-life movement and Terri Schiavo, the short-term political impact for the Republican Party is a disaster.

This man is insane.

Sounds like Bill Press wants to fire up our team right before the big game!

I'll hang this up in our locker-room to motivate us & keep us focused on the job ahead.

Now bow your head for a team prayer.

Actually, what we have seen is the triumph, in an odd way, of the "religious right." A majority of Americans, and a larger majority of younger people, agree that abortion in most cases is wrong; that PBA is completely wrong and favor the ban; and that "gay marriage" is bad for society.

What has happened is a disagreement now over what to do with those attitudes. Some still want to criminalize and legalize everything; others want to change hearts and minds.

Contrary to popular analysis, the "evangelicals" are NOT "green," but rather a Christian left pretending to be "evangelical" has taken over green issues, much the way radical Catholics sided with the commies in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

I would warn people though that if you haven't noticed it, a "holier-than-thou" attitude among some conservatives/religious people is harming us badly. In OH in 2006, I personally know devout, VERY conservative Christians who didn't vote; who are so ill-informed they are anti-war; and who take the view that "both sides are corrupt so stay out of politics." Many of these people fund missions, are active in missionary outreach, but don't see any connection between politics and their "daily" life. I think some of these people are the types who jump on the Huckabandwagon; who will oppose Mitt JUST because he's a Mormon; and who "feel sorry" for illegals so it isn't an issue with them.

Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger, but I hear these views more than I should from such people.

"Stupid liberal..Fred is a Federalist about abortion."Well, he says so and even gives speeches to the Federalist Society but I'm wondering --- why then did he vote for McCain/Feingold?

It is not only anti-federalism, it is anti-First Amendment.

I can understand Fred's opinion Roe v. Wade's being bad law and should be struck down as even the very liberal Lawrence Tribe does. How is McCain/Feingold not also "bad law" even though it was upheld by the Supremes?

That vote by Fred and constitutional OK by the Supremes was much more recent than Roe.

Colmes is a decent guy. Most of what he does is show. Press is a rabid, snarling communist.

Back when Crossfire started, old Tom Braden, a really decent old time liberal, had to do the snarling bit on CNN. Problem was he was agreeing with the right more and more and he and Pat Buchanan started agreeing all the time instead of fighting and arguing. Braden either retired or got canned.

Colmes believes a lot of his crap. But he is still a decent guy at his core.

Press was the chair of the California Democratic Party from 1993 to 1996.

Press needs attention his ‘big time’ days are over:

Since September 2005, Press has been hosting a daily progressive syndicated talk radio program which is broadcast in twenty three markets including some Air America Radio affiliates.

Since May 2005 he’s been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post.

Bill Press is also a LIAR:

They’re at it again. Led by Rush Limbaugh, the Republican Party Smear Machine is back in high gear.

Rush smeared all members of the military who don’t support the war in Iraq by calling them “phony soldiers.” Next, he smeared Iraq veteran Brian McGough by comparing him to a “suicide bomber.” His latest target: 12-year-old Baltimore seventh-grader Graeme Frost.

Well now that we have established that our Business sector has been infiltrated by globalist Commies...maybe we don’t want big lobbyists with money like $oro$ controlling our political landscape. It’s called rethinking a position after the facts are in. No doubt Feingold wanted to shut up the Moral Majority, I suspect that Fred knew a little more about the other side of the coin before the rest of us. Hopefully he will come out with the full story on this in the days ahead.

Huffington Post:

Russ Feingold is a Bill Press ‘hero’:

introducing a resolution to censure President Bush over his illegal NSA wiretapping

Did Bush break the law? Yes! Does he deserve censure? Yes! So do it!

Refusing to hold Bush responsible, kissing Bush’s ass, makes Democrats look too soft.

And, besides, Republicans impeached - not censured, remember: impeached! - Bill Clinton for a hell of a lot less.

http://tinyurl.com/yp4e3e

Waaaaaaa!!! Bill Clinton was: impeached!

What has happened is that a few political panderers to the "religious right" have come up short. I'd say good news, but nothing earth shattering.

Since his party depends so much on monolithic voting blocks it's amusing he'd cheer the dissolution of one. They do love practicing divide and conquer politics.

Yep, though I didn't hear that he had disavowed that. Glad to learn of it.

I believe that McCain/F was all about incumbent protection and keeping others like themselves in office and newcomers from being able to launch a campaign against them, especially at home in their own primaries. Mostly those guys never actually have any opposition even if they need to be gone, i.e. Byrd, WVA.

What drew me to visit freerepublic back in the late 90’s was the level of intelligents being shown by the members of freerepublic. All through the last days of Slick Willie, the folks were as accurate as a good hunting rifle.
Through the election of George Bush the first and second time the folks spoke with excellent insight.
I do wonder if all the pioneers that shared their years of experience is still around, is it me or is freerepublic still as active as it once was.

Contrary to popular analysis, the "evangelicals" are NOT "green," but rather a Christian left pretending to be "evangelical" has taken over green issues, much the way radical Catholics sided with the commies in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Did you mean evangelical Catholics here? Evangelicals I am familiar with do not fit your description.
