There will be a New Years Eve Senate name-dropping in Mississippi, when Republican Gov. Haley Barbour is scheduled to announce his appointee as the interim replacement to resigned Republican Sen. Trent Lott.
Republican Rep. Roger Wicker of the 1st District is widely regarded as a leading candidate to be Barbours choice, and other GOP figures are thought to be under consideration.
While Barbour has not tipped his hand, one prominent Mississippi Republican retiring 3rd District Rep. Charles W. Chip Pickering Jr. took it upon himself Friday afternoon to remove himself from the running for the seat that Lott vacated for personal reasons on Dec. 18.
Pickering said in a statement that he had asked Barbour to remove his name from consideration for the Senate appointment, which is effective through a special election that will coincide with the regularly scheduled general elections next Nov. 4. The winner of that contest will serve the remaining four years of the term that Lott won in November 2006,
The 44-year-old Pickering, who was first elected to the House in 1996, has long been mentioned as a likely successor to Lott or Republican Sen. Thad Cochran , who is seeking a sixth six-year term in 2008. But Pickerings decision to not pursue a Senate appointment was not surprising, because he had announced in August that he would not seek re-election to the House next year and wanted to spend more time with his wife and young children.
I continue to stand by that decision in relation to this Senate vacancy, Pickering said. I believe public service is an honorable calling. But now is not my time.

I’m expecting that Roger Wicker will be the choice. Politically, it makes sense- he’s from a swing area politically (northeastern MS, which could go either way), has a good track record in winning votes, and seems to be conservative enough.

Hopefully a PJ media savvy, non-RINO.
Anyone short of Elton John will be a better man than Lott.
Too bad Haley doesn’t name himself.
That would almost guarantee his defeat, as voters don’t like that sort of thing.
If the GOP nominates Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani, Barbour could very well be the Vice Presidential running mate.
Too bad. Maybe his father would be a nice poke in the eye to liberals.
My next comment WOULD have been banned by the Admin Moderator.
HAPPY NEW YEAR MARTIN!!!
Mississippi ping
Exactly what I was thinking.
I don’t expect Haley to name himself, just that he would be a huge upgrade for that seat from Mississippi.
And I agree wholeheartedly that the Guv’nor from Ole Miss makes a northern nominee more palatable for those who need it to be.
Does he possess a spine amd some testicles? Something Lott and teh rest of his ilk had removed long ago
I’d rather he didn’t name Wicker. As AuH2o has told us, Wicker is linked to the crooked rodent Governor of PR. We don’t need that headache.
Have you read the gossip at the C-L regarding Haley choosing the mayor of Gulfport to replace Lott? I don’t know anything about him. But Haley is having two press conferences on Monday, including one at the Coast. Not that that means anything . . .
Lott is a putz.
I am glad to see him go.
The coast announcement may pertain to this

Haley Barbour should appoint himself (if it’s legal). He’d be a great asset in the Senate.

The rest of that post seems to contradict its first sentence.

You’re probably right. :)
I just heard from pretty reliable source that everyone
may be surprised by who Haley nominates.
Note:
(Pretty reliable)
I trust Haley’s judgement. He’s got a good track record.
I KNOW your sources to be very reliable.
So, I guess we’re in for a big surprise.
I just got home from Missippy.
Yesterday, mother received a polling call.
She was asked if she knew Musgrove and Wicker.
(She knows Musgrove, but doesn’t know Wicker.)
She was, then, asked for whom she would vote if they were the candidates.
She told that gal that she would vote for ANYONE opposing Musgrove. lol
BTW, this is my first post on my Christmas computer.
I now have my “E” and “R” back!
I’m still learning my buttons. ;o)
Anyone with ANY ties to ANY ‘Rican politicians should be denied the right to run. The PPD and the Penepes (PNP) are the scum of the earth. The place makes Louisiana look like Minnesota in terms of corruption.
Glad you made it back safe and sound. Hope you had Happy Christmas in MS. And hope you have a Merry New Year!
It’s bowl season, so we’re havin’ fun with our children, watchin’ football every day. It’s the only time hubby and I watch tv for more than one or two shows a week. We watched two football games yesterday and one today. And we have a bunch more to go. I might even cheer for AuBarn tomorrow. :)
Trent, don’t let the screen door hitcha where the dead raccoon on yer head splitcha.
word I’m getting from Mississippi is Lott resigned over expected Scruggs blowback.
DOJ straight down from Bush and company told him he should step down now.
I had a GREAT Christmas, but it wasn’t in MS...it was here.
I left here on Thursday, and returned today.
I know...not much time...but better this time than NO time!
I was able to watch most of the Emerald Bowl...Oregon State...daughter’s alma matar.
They won!
When I was driving to Jackson today, there were a lot of ‘Bama cars doing 90 mph on I 20.
Did I miss a ‘Bama game? ;o)
I hope you and your family have a Happy and Blessed New Year!
And...may all of your teams win.
No kidding?
That deserves a big ole WOW!
If true, it would explain a “lott”. ;o)
Bama fans going 90mph????? On that stretch of road. No way! haha. I confess. I’ve gone 95mph between Forest and T-town.
Well, MsState won. And Bama won. What a messy win it was, too!
I didn’t know your daughter went to Oregon State, but why would I?????? Congrats to them! (I think the only time I’ve seen Oregon State compete was in a women’s gymnastics meet.)

I really did not hit post twice! Must be a gremlin in the system!
Hey, maybe Haley will appoint Frank Melton !
*running away*
Hee hee!
LLS
Nobody f**ks with the Frank, he’ll shoot ya !
Yep...’Bama fans were going 90 mph +...and I eased my way into thier caravan, and made it to the airport in record time.
THANK YOU, ‘BAMA FANS! ;o)
Glad to hear that State and ‘Bama won.
It might have been messy, but it was a “win”.
My daughter’s undergrad degree was from Portland State.
Her post grad work was at OSU and OHSU...2 years each.
There’s no way you could have known that. ;o)
BTW, OSU won the NCAA Baseball World Series for the last two years.
Happy New Year!
You would think I’d know the baseball stuff. I used to keep up with such. Before we had so many children. Now we have a son who keeps us up to date. He’s a baseball nut. He memorizes every stat he comes across. I’ll ask him if he knows who won the CWS the last two years. (I bet hubby knows, but I’ll never admit to him that I don’t know something like that. Baseball is soooooooooo very important. j/k)
We watched two SEC games today, and our sports nut son cheered for the opposition each time. I tried to trick him over the Auburn game. I told him that I could never be for Auburn. But that’s not true. I usually cheer for all SEC teams. Hubby declared tonight that he cannot manage to cheer for Tennessee. They’ll have to get rid of their coach first. heh. Not that you care about all this football stuff. :)
