Iran plans 19 more nuclear plants

TEHRAN -- Iran plans to build 19 more nuclear power plants and will soon solicit international bids for their construction, a lawmaker said in a report published Monday.

"Contracts for the construction of 19 nuclear power plants, each with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts, will be put into international tender in the near future," Kazem Jalali was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

Jalali, a member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the bids would be in line with legislation that calls for production of 20,000 megawatts of electricity through nuclear power plants.

Jalali, who made his comments Sunday, gave no time frame for the projects. His words do not necessarily represent the position of Iran's executive branch, headed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran does not have any operating electricity-producing nuclear power plants.

Russia is completing a 1,000-megawatt nuclear plant for Iran outside the southern city of Bushehr.

This is all to the good. Now, If the USA would build 200 new nuke plants this country could also be on the way to independence.

More like a dozen in planning in the USA, as well as the old ones that are still working. Iran might be an odd duck, but it is no serious threat. They have oil, which once was on contract to England and now is on contract to Asia, but that’s all they have unless dry dust somehow becomes of strategic value.

That would be "bunker Buster" arsenal but what's your point?

Iranian nuclear power is nothing but peaceful endeavors by Iran to take care of the "children" of Iran...

Who would think otherwise? /s

Not only that but they can go to electric cars and their gasoline problem will go away. That would work in parts of the USA too. And all of Europe.

That's why we have used oil as a cheap energy source while we worked on a sensible alternative for decades..../s

Some day, SOME DAY, those windmills will be the pride of efficiency if given the chance to prove themselves to be.

In the meantime, let's destroy everything we have accomplished via saving the planet...

That’s right. We have completely wasted most of the respite we were given since the Arab oil embargo. If we somehow survive it won’t be due to our good looks and hard work.

Don’t know. We’re playing it by ear, having run out of sheet music a while back.
