A fifth of the theaters bailed on this movie last week. It has the lowest earnings per screen of any of the top ten. Hopefully many more theaters will dump this movie in order to get Legend or National Treasure for the Christmas Break.
No way this movie is making the budget back. International Gross is going to be about $70 M.
The big shock is how Dewey Cox fell apart, he’s been the second banana in some big hit comedies. Apparently he’s going to stay second banana.
I heard today on one of the sports shows that Jessica Simpson’s movie is taking a hit in the Dallas area because Tony Romo has been playing so lousy the last couple of games and the Dallas fans are blaming it on Simpson and boycotting her movie.
Gotta love in - ALVIN and the Chipmunks has almost doubled the total output of Golden Compass in 2 weeks.
Well! I guess that means all the disgruntled atheists have seen it, so it won’t be long before it hits DVD.
It won’t do any better then either....
Oh well......
Two scientologist freak flicks at the top of the box office. I refuse to support them.
The Golden Compass has turned to the Lead Baloon, that $180 million probably doesn’t include advertising. I think Chronicals of Narnia had $140 million by the end of the 3rd weekend.
S%*^(@!!! Golden Compass!
Saw I am Legend. That’s a fine movie. And it’s not a liberal one, either. It has favorable references to theistic religion, not especially Biblical Christianity, but still, very positive on that front. The virus that causes the global breakdown is NOT blamed on Republicans. So all in all this is a fine movie, very scary, Will Smith is (of course) brilliant.
Looking forward to National Treasure 2. Loved the first. Good, clean (almost entirely) film.
All hail, Xenu. Scientology ping for Smith and Cage. :(
Should be out in DVD in about a month at this rate.
I want to see “The Bucket List.”
I saw it tonight and liked it very much. It was pretty similar to the first but still lots of fun. Certainly another "good clean film" - it's a shame they are so few and far between anymore.

I loved the first NATIONAL TREASURE, so thanks for the positive short review. No liberal message in the movie? Good enough for me, and I will watch it with my gf next weekend.
I must admit, I saw Enchanted..good movie! Susan Sarandon plays herself.. a mean evil witch, and she does an excellent job at it.
I saw Juno this week and loved it, one of my favorite films of the year. It’s sort of pro-life in a subversive way, more subtly so than Knocked Up was. It even features a first in cinema history, an abortion-clinic protester who isn’t a mindless fanatic—the scene between Juno and the protester is actually sweet and charming, like the movie itself.
Our local small theater, which was probably happy they had gotten this movie, is dumping it on Christmas day, to replace it with some movie I’ve never heard of.
Yes! And here’s a video clip of Sarandon as the Evil Queen. It also shows a scene where she’s in witch/hag makeup. Excellent casting!

Why is Charlie Wilson’s War tanking? 9 mill isn’t very much for a Christmas blockbuster, with two 20 million dollar a pic stars.
I couldn't find one and I'm usually very sensitive to stuff like that.
I saw “I am Legend” and loved it. It talks about God in a favorable light and even shows a church at the end. It is rare to see churches in Hollywood movies these days.
If you haven’t seen it, I recommend it. Bring some tissues if you are a dog lover though.
Having seen the trailers for Golden Compass a few weeks ago once at a movie theater, and I think once on TV, I feel heartened to find these BO receipts. The sooner we get to the day that these absurdly overwrought, “too-busy” movies fall by the wayside, the better-—they all represent huge economic gambles that people love to watch fail, upsetting all the producer’s fondest notions, not to mention thousands of investors’, thinking they had a sure thing, the next Lord of the Rings, or whatever....I never see this kind of film, anyway.
They are still buying ads for it - sending good money after bad, it appears.
I guess it doesn’t matter what it costs when you are evangelizing for atheists.
Ditto and ditto for National Treasure II.
"The guys who are trying to screw up the world never take a day off."
Evil is presented as real, unappeasable, and not susceptible to reason or sentiment; it can only be fought, to the death, if necessary. (No "touchy-feely".) But a redemptive and optimistic ending.
Yes, and the poor puppy.
Well, folks, I sat through this movie last night on the telly (free on the Internet), and I'm wondering why anyone was worried about anything. It's a dud!
I'd guess the story is sorta a fantasy/science-fiction thing, and probably a take-off on the Harry Potter and Ring stories, but the author/screenwriter/director never seemed to get their $hit together, so it was tough to follow.
The actors:
The young lady who played the heroine has talent, and should get work after this.
Nicole Kidman shoulda stayed in porn films.
Sam 'what's-his-name' who always plays a grizzled old cowboy, plays a grizzled old cowboy again, and he's good at it! He played a grizzled old cowboy next to Nicholas Cage in 'Ghostriders' (a great flic!). Watching him is like watching John Wayne or Jack Nicholson - you know what yer gonna get.
Nobody else is memorable.
Animation and special effects are so-so. Seemed to be done on the cheap.
The only story-line discernable is that this is 'part one' of more parts that are probably already shot (since there are kids involved and they do grow-up). Whether enough money is made on this first one will determine if anybody bothers to piece-together any more crap like this one film.
Rating: G-DB. Kids will walk out 'cause it's so damn boring.
Religiosity: No problems - it's just a bad story.
Conclusion: Go rent 'Ghostrider' for the grown-ups, or 'The Never Ending Story' for the kids and me.
Better stories ................ FRegards
There must be a God after all. And he doesn't like the Golden Compass. LOL
It’s not tanking, it’s building a word-of-mouth campaign and will open wider later on.
Add to that $180 the publicity costs, which I would guesstimate are tens of millions.
So after DVD income is put aside, this thing is going to have to make well over $200 million to turn a profit.
Even if you include foreign, it ain't gonna do that.
I hope CWW has legs. It’s a terrific movie.
Sam Elliott?
Well, the author of the books was quite frank in his statements that the first book in the trilogy was mostly eye-candy, designed to get children hooked into the series, and that his efforts at indoctrinating their young minds in atheism was reserved for book two and especially book three.
Presumably, the same would be true of the movie. So I would not have expected to see much overt anti-religious content in the first movie (though there is some). The really important thing about the failure of this movie is that the sequels will probably never be filmed, which is a very, very good thing.
And whacking Hollywood on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper from time to time when they are being evil is probably not a bad idea, either.
On the radio tonight the news guy (CBS, I believe) actually said (paraphrasing, but real close):
“Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are finding out what other Hollywood movie-makers have discovered over recent years - - the public is not interested in war movies about Iraq and Afghanistan. ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ is just the latest effort to tank at the box office.”
And, frankly, I can't blame them a bit, given Hollywood's track record.
Nice to see that “Golden Compass” has gone off course, bested no less than by a movie about hyperactive helium voiced chipmunks.
I went to Alvin and the Chipmunks with my daughter, and I didn't detect any attacks on religion or God, stealth or otherwise. Maybe that is why they are having so much success...
I couldn't have anything to do with being a good movie, obviously...
So, is “I Am Legend” better than “The Omega Man”? I believe this is the third time a movie has been made from this book..
Yep, Sam Elliott. Best actor currently specializing in authentic western characters and a pretty solid conservative. He and Tom Sellick (of Rosie O’ fame) are very good friends. Sam brings a genuine stoicism to his roles, and, btw, grizzled is a very good descriptive adjective for him.
What did the little ones think about it though?
They loved it. I was wanting to slip next door for Legend, but the wife I left at home with the 2 year old wouldn’t have stood for that.
I’m glad the wee one’s enjoyed it. They need good wholesome entertainment, and the chipmunks look like they can provide that. I can remember when the chipmunks first came out back in the 50’s. I was a child then, and absolutely loved them. I’m glad they have stood the test of time and haven’t been perverted as have so many other icons of that era. Maybe you and the missus can find a sitter and take in Legend over the holidays. Best to ya in the mean time.
Merry Christmas, y'all!
Has anyone seen Dr. Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner,” yet? It is a wonderful movie. Dr. Hosseini did not pull any punches about the goings-on of the Taliban. It is also a story of redemption—who can go wrong with that?
Excellent question. I am embarrassed to say I have not seen Omega Man, though I, like many on this forum, are huge Heston fans.
My guess would be that Omega Man was great for its era and you have to appreciate it for what it is. Contemporary films bring technology and other resources to the screen in a way just not available to previous eras. And that makes current films (good ones) special in a way in which the older ones can’t be compared to.
It’s sort of like if someone made a live action Ten Commandments today. Would it be “better” than Mr. Heston as Moses? No doubt in “some” respects it would be perhaps more beleivable, think Lord of the Rings here. And Moses’ character would be less theatrical than Heston’s masterpiece performance. Can the two ever be compared, really? I think that is apples to oranges.
And yes, this is #3 for the book (haven’t read that, either).
I do intend to see Omega Man, now, though.
Thanks!
**So, is I Am Legend better than The Omega Man? I believe this is the third time a movie has been made from this book.**
—”The last Man on Earth” with Vincent Price
“The Omega Man” with Charlton Heston
“I am Legend” with Will Smith.
While all of the movies are worth seeing; “I am Legend” is the best of them all.—
I read the book when it Richard Matheson first wrote it (I AM that old), then saw all the movies, ‘I Am Legend’ just last night.
Will Smith did a good job, as did Charlton Heston and even Vincent Price, but the book was better than all of them.
Guess I’m a purist that way.—
-Sam, ‘what’s-his-name’ Elliot! Yup! Grizzled is perfect fer him. Ya just know he’s got a six-shooter on him someplace ............ FRegards
