NH Newspaper Calls Romney "A Phony" Dec 23 12:47 PM US/Eastern By GLEN JOHNSON Associated Press Writer MILFORD, N.H. (AP) - The Concord Monitor broke with political tradition Sunday, telling readers in the state with the first presidential primary why they should not vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney instead of whom they should support.
In a scathing anti-endorsement that called Romney a "disquieting figure," the New Hampshire newspaper's editorial board said he looks and acts like a presidential contender but "surely must be stopped" because he lacks the core philosophical beliefs to be a trustworthy president.
In particular, the newspaper noted the former Massachusetts governor's change of heart on such issues as abortion rights, stem-cell research and access to emergency contraception, as well as on signing an anti- tax pledge.
"When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state's first- in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we'll know it," the newspaper said. "Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no."
Romney's campaign sloughed off the criticism and instead pointed to his endorsement Sunday by the Sioux City Journal in Iowa, the state whose Jan. 3 caucuses kick off the presidential nominating process. Romney also has been stumping hard in New Hampshire ahead of its Jan. 8 primary, including stops here and in two other communities on Sunday.

Poor Slick Willard. That’s gonna leave a mark.
Whatever their history, everything they said can be supported by facts and videos.
and they would be right ...
Read that....he is Clintonian in his approach to politics.
Cracks in the juggernaut?
“You rubes, listen to me! I’ll tell you how to vote. That Mitt Romney is dangerous; he’ll be too hard for our Democrats to defeat. So, you stay away from him, you hear!”
Well, I’m no Romney supporter, but if I lived in NH, and it is a liberal rag, and I knew it, I’d probably vote for the person they told me not to vote for. I’m going to have trouble voting for most of the lot, not just Romney, so why did they single out Romney...why not Huckabee?
I’d be pretty suspicious of the motivation of a liberal newspaper telling a conservative who NOT to vote for.
Many of us here at FR have been saying the same thing for months, but Romney supporters (especially the mormon true believers) cannot be reasoned with.
LOL, a Rat newspaper says “don’t vote for Mitt,” so the Rats won’t vote for him... anyway.
Yawn.
I know the feeling.
Myth a phony!?
I live in NH and the Concord Monitor is a liberal rag. And I planned long before this article that Mitt is a RINO and would sell out the voters of this country just like he did in Massachusetts.
That’s a bunch of horse hockey if I’ve ever heard any. Do you know how laughable that argument is? I’m betting you can do better than that. How bout trying to sell your liberal candidate based on his merits. Now that would be funny.
Yeah. It is funny how a democratic party affiliated newspaper’s un-endorsement is used by some so called conservatives against Romney. The fact that liberals hate him should be a merit (at least among conservatives).
What next? DNC attack ads are used against Mitt in this forum? Wait..It is happening..
Same here. But the problem for me is that I'm not 100% sure it's a RAT paper.I live next door to NH and think I've heard that it's RAT.But someone who's more familiar with the paper would have to weigh in on this.

Clinton and Romney Have Highest Level of Core Opposition Among Leading Candidates
1. John McCain 22% (18%) / 33% (33%) / (-11%)
2. Mike Huckabee 21% (17%) / 34% (36%) / (-13%)
2. Fred Thompson 21% (17%) / 34% (40%) / (-13%)
4. Rudy Giuliani 23% (27%) / 42% (40%) / (-19%)
5. Mitt Romney 19% (19%) / 47% (39%) / (-28%)
6. Ron Paul 10% (9%) / 48% (46%) / (-38%)
That’s pretty much the worst thing you could call a candidate before the Iowa primaries. Iowans pride themselves on finding “authentic” candidates.
This would favor Hunter.

According to Intrade, the winner of yesterdays GOP debate was... Duncan Hunter.

LOL, I know what you mean.
In particular, the newspaper noted the former Massachusetts governor's change of heart on such issues as abortion rights, stem-cell research and access to emergency contraception, as well as on signing an anti- tax pledge.
What, he's NOT flip-flopping enough?
Or maybe he's got too much integrity to cheat on his wife and lie under oath.
Slicker than snot on a door knob!! :^)
You rubes need to vote for Huckabee. He’s your man. (Then Hillary can win in 50 states and have a mandate.)
“When asked why, many give the same answer: God has led Brother Mike down this path.”

NEVER VOTE FOR A PSEUDO CON
I wouldn’t put an ounce of trust into anything that horrible newspaper says. I’m more inclined than ever to vote for Mitt now. And I’m ashamed of what some “conservatives” have said on this thread. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”, ey? Bullshiite.
It’s only going to leave a mark if people like you put any faith whatsoever in that kind of liberal slop.
Would Republican primary voters only figure that out!! VOTE for a conservative, not one of the Liberal Troika!! (plus Huck)
Bingo!
The facts are the facts:
1. Mitt was PASSIONATELY pro-abortion — even on video -— until he decided to run for office.
2. Mitt was anti-gun — well until he joined the NRA two weeks before running for office.
3. RomneyCare is HillaryCare — but with $50 abortions
4. Raised “fees” (taxes under a different name) for businesses.
5. Promised to be ‘more gay friendly’ than Ted Kennedy.
6. Wanted gays in the Boy Scouts.
Basicaly, Romney is a say-anthing-to-get-elected sociopath, just like Clinton.
Liberal rag or not, the facts are the facts.
"Liberal slop". Sounds like a great term for Mitt Romney offers conservatives.
I don’t think so Tim.
-—And Im ashamed of what some conservatives have said on this thread.-—
They look like Democrat attack robots. They sound like Democrat attack robots...
I don’t care what you think.
They got it right for all the wrong reasons.
Willard is a greasy phony.
Yes, we should all listen to these people at this NH newspaper, who all think Bill Clinton is someone who DOES have the “Core Values” necessary to be President.
It may be a liberal paper but it doesn’t mean what they say isn’t true. It can all be supported by fact. Just check youtube. Myth Romney is a spineless RINO.
Are you from Massachusetts?
I’m beginning to believe you guys are from the DNC. So are you going to repost the other stories you have posted from previous days? Remember there is such a thing as overplaying your hand.
For the other Freepers remember in politics things are not always as they appear.
Yes, but none of this changes the fact that Mitt is a phoney. The paper has this right at least.
"Americans acknowledge that liberty is a gift of God, not an indulgence of government. No people in the history of the world have sacrificed as much for liberty. The lives of hundreds of thousands of America's sons and daughters were laid down during the last century to preserve freedom, for us and for freedom loving people throughout the world. America took nothing from that Century's terrible wars – no land from Germany or Japan or Korea; no treasure; no oath of fealty. America's resolve in the defense of liberty has been tested time and again. It has not been found wanting, nor must it ever be. America must never falter in holding high the banner of freedom.I saw Jesus suffering on the cross for you and me."These American values, this great moral heritage, is shared and lived in my religion as it is in yours. I was taught in my home to honor God and love my neighbor. I saw my father march with Martin Luther King. I saw my parents provide compassionate care to others, in personal ways to people nearby, and in just as consequential ways in leading national volunteer movements. I am moved by the Lord's words: 'For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me...'
"My faith is grounded on these truths. You can witness them in Ann and my marriage and in our family. We are a long way from perfect and we have surely stumbled along the way, but our aspirations, our values, are the self-same as those from the other faiths that stand upon this common foundation. And these convictions will indeed inform my presidency.
Excerpt from Governor Mitt Romney's "Faith In America" Address, Thursday, Dec 6, 2007
I see a bright future for America!
God bless you and Merry Christmas FReeper FRiends.
The Concord Monitor makes the New York Times look conservative.
They are whining that Romney has refused to close down Gitmo, ban torture, etc.. They say Romney will hurt America’s moral standing in the world. Now where have I heard that before? Did Pelosi write this?
Nope. My problem with Willard is that he is a liberal liar infiltrating the GOP. Maybe you have no problem with that, but conservatives do.
I really don’t mind someone who filps on the abortion issue, and long as thye flip the right way, and don’t flop back.
If the Concord paper had been around it earlier days, they would have lambasted St. Paul for switching to Christianity!
I found this particularly good Joe Biden: a pragmatist rich with experience December 18, 2007
