Mike Huckabee's Legacy
Real Clear Politics ^ | December 19, 2007 | Rod Dreher

Could it be that cultural and religious conservatives are fed up with being treated like useful idiots by the Republican establishment?

Karl Rove helped re-elect Mr. Bush in 2004 by pushing statewide ballot initiatives to protect traditional marriage. But when the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution came up before the Senate, the GOP backed away from it, and President Bush gave it only desultory support. The amendment died with barely a fight from the Beltway right.

Then there was the secret memo sent by Michael Scanlon, associate of crooked GOP fixer Jack Abramoff, that mocked Christian conservatives as "wackos" who could be easily manipulated to serve business interests. And David Kuo, the conservative evangelical former White House staffer, wrote last year that when Christian leaders would stop by, kissing up would ensue, but then they "were dismissed behind their backs and described as 'ridiculous,' 'out of control' and just plain 'goofy.' "

Is there any wonder that a growing number of evangelicals are tired of playing the establishment's game, no matter what their traditional leaders say? Should Mr. Huckabee win the GOP nomination, he won't owe the religious right's old guard a thing. Good.

But this populist revolt is not just about religion. Mr. Huckabee calls himself the candidate of Main Street, taking on a party that has become "a wholly owned subsidiary of Wall Street." He's a throwback to a kind of conservatism that had a home in the Democratic Party before it embraced the counterculture - and created Reagan Democrats.

“religious conservatives are fed up with being treated like useful idiots by the Republican establishment”

Perhaps they should think two steps ahead and understand the alternatives are conversion, submission or death at the hands of the Muslim establishment.

The problem is, the GOP establishment has been taking both social conservatives and small government conservatives for granted. The result: Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. As much as I dislike Huckabee as a candidate, I can’t blame his supporters for backing him. That’s what happens when you back people into a corner with a candidate like Giuliani. My hope is that with Giuliani potentially falling, the need for a Huckabee diminishes and we can get behind a candidate who appeals to all factions of the Reagan coalition.

That’s why I like Thompson — I believe he can appeal to many social conservatives, small government conservatives and national security hawks. But he’s not the guy the establishment has been grooming for the job over the past four years, and it doesn’t seem to me as if he’ll dance to their tune. JMO, of course.

That's why the 'Club for Greed' fears him ...

Do you think Christians fear death?

the author tips his hand, here:
“The marvelous Ron Paul excepted, most of the GOP candidates are about the end of something. Mike Huckabee is about the beginning of the next big thing in Republican politics. “

The marvelous Ron Paul? No thanks.

Um...sorry to be blunt, but supporting Huckabee doesn't exactly put those accusations to rest.

I don’t know. I think Bush has been consistent in religious social conservatism. I don’t include immigration issue in it, because for me it’s a combination of security, economic, and patriotic issues rather than social conservatism issues.

Huckabee Begs For New Taxes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pLOC4krZI4

Huckabee Caught Lying About His Tax Hikes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYrGlfkvRV0&feature=related

Huckabee is a pro-illegal, pro-Amnesty, tax raising, big government loving, socialist/liberal, violent criminal pardoning, terrorist appeasing, false prophet. In other words Huckabee is really a Democrat.

Under no circumstances will I ever vote for this liberal/communist con man.

The Huckster Huckabee or Hillary will let in hundreds of millions of 3rd world socialist illegals.

The Huckster or Hillary will surrender to Iran and let Iran build a nuclear arsenal.

The Huckster or Hillary will raise taxes and increase the size of government putting the U.S. on the road to socialism which will destroy our way of life, destroy our economy, destroy our civilization.

If you think I'm exaggerating look at Huckabee's record and into the dangers of socialism.

But hey , the idiot Huckster lies and says he is pro-life so that makes all of this ok huh?

It is absolutely untrue that the President gave only desultory support to Defense of Marriage.

“President Calls for Constitutional Amendment Protecting Marriage
Remarks by the President
The Roosevelt Room
10:43 A.M. EST

“For all these reasons, the Defense of Marriage requires a constitutional amendment. An amendment to the Constitution is never to be undertaken lightly. The amendment process has addressed many serious matters of national concern. And the preservation of marriage rises to this level of national importance. The union of a man and woman is the most enduring human institution, honoring — honored and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith. Ages of experience have taught humanity that the commitment of a husband and wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society.”

That’s clear, unequivocal support. Where support was lacking was in Congress, since once activist judges got involved in interpreting the Constitution, Congress backed away from the amendment, not the President.

Which points out the fallacy of social conservatives whose answer to every problem is, “We need a Constitutional amendment.” Sure we do, but figure the odds. Besides which, since the President has no authority to amend the Constitution whatsoever, the only thing he can do is verbally support the idea.

If we want Defense of Marriage and a Human Life Amendment we’re going to have to start at the local level and work our way up. Without state support to propel them, no matter who is on the Oval Office, these amendments are going nowhere.
