The Ithaca Common Council continues to investigate how to prohibit smoking on some city-owned land.
Council's Environment and Neighborhood Quality committee will work with the City Attorney's office to develop a list of areas that could be designated smoke free, according to Robin Korherr, D-5th, chair of the committee.
Smoking is a habit and we develop our habits from our environment, Korherr said. We're trying to target youth and let them know that it's okay not to smoke and it doesn't need to be allowed everywhere. If they don't see it happening around them, they may not choose to smoke later in life.
Korherr said the prohibition could apply at all times, or only under certain circumstances, such as mass gatherings.
She said the committee will seek input from the Ithaca Downtown Partnership about impacted populations, particularly downtown restaurants and taverns that could be adversely affected by a smoking prohibition on The Commons.
If there's enough concern from the partnership in this regard, we may host a public hearing, she said.
Why not outlaw exhaling? CO2 emissions are the biggest threat to the planet and are much worse than the holocaust. Only Hitler would allow exhaling.
They are liberals. Just make a law bcause they "feel" that it "may" make a difference. They do it all the time, why the discussion now?
Heaven forbid they should spend their time investigating real crimes—instead of making criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens.
Nanny strikes again...
Three monkey legislation
Certainly the Commons would see a ban, the various parks, perhaps the paths along the gorges....
Nanny State Ping..........Coming to a sidewalk near you.
If they didn’t kick the smokers out into the street they wouldn’t have to worry about yoots “seeing” the evil smokers.
LOL, the first place to test market their ban should be right outside of city hall, there are times I drive by there and there’s 30-40 employees outside smoking.

Why not just enact a prohibition of the sale and use of tobacco within the city? There are still officially “dry” cities and counties where alcohol is banned. However, anyone who has even heard of Elliot Ness or the Dukes of Hazard knows the effectiveness of prohibition.
Thanks for the ping!
I would also hope that they refuse any revenues that are the result of the sale of tobacco. I would also hope that they would forego any tax revenue from smokers that would have otherwise been used for these public lands.
