“Sea food is loaded with iodine.”

That’s why they always said that Catholics were smarter than your average bear; they always had fish on Friday.

I don't think the bears wait for Friday.

Salt licks are not iodized.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to stop licking them now.

Does cooking with iodized salt add any iodine to food? I have been eating sea salt or kosher salt for a few years now and rarely use iodized salt. To be honest I thought sea salt had iodine, but I just found not very much.

I saw on here people talking about cayenne pepper. Does it contain a good amount of iodine? I grow hot peppers so maybe I am getting enough iodine after all.

Cayenne is not a source of iodine, but is an excellent source of Vitamin A, which is lacking in most people’s diet. Capsicum, the chemical that makes peppers hot, is also a blood coagulant; I take cayenne capsules for bleeding problems.

The following foods, in addition to iodized salt, are sources of iodine:
Seafood
Cod
Sea bass
Haddock
Perch
Kelp
Dairy products
Plants grown in soil rich in iodine

I assume that non-fortified dairy products’ iodine content would be related to the soil iodine content where the relevant cattle graze, or the iodine content of commercial cattle feed. It looks like it’s hard to get enough dietary iodine unless one lives where the soil is iodine-rich.

Thanks I knew about the high Vitamin A and C content in peppers, I just saw 2 posts about cayenne pepper capsules so I assumed it was for iodine. Not surprised it isn't a source of iodine as I would have remembered it, if I read it before.

Does Cod Liver Oil contain iodine? I don't eat much fish besides grouper or tuna. I have Cod Liver Oil capsules but rarely take them, but would start if it has a sufficient iodine content.

Don’t stop now if that has been your primary source of trace minerals or if you are addicted to the molasses flavoring.

A quick search shows that cod-liver oil has only trace amounts of iodine. It’s being emphasized now for the “essential fatty acids,” and for Vitamins A and D.

Neither do folks who wish to stay informed and similarly monitor research. ;)

Goiters used to be a central US problem.

Iodine is natural in sea salt...Diets rich in sea food rarely are deficient.

Interesting article as the U.S. has just about banned the sale of iodine, the kind you used to buy in the tiny little bottle that turned your skin a weird brownish color and was used as an antiseptic.

Apparently meth makers use it to make their drugs.

So now nobody can buy it. Except the salt providers apparently.
