BP shooter enters plea

Jordan Andrew Davidson pleaded guilty Tuesday to the attempted killing of Jesus Humberto Aguilar, a Border Patrol agent. The 21-year-old, living in Bryan at the time of his arrest, pleaded to one count of attempted murder of an officer or employee of the U.S. and one count of using a firearm during a violent crime.

He was arrested earlier this year in Nuevo Laredo after he shot Aguilar in the hand and fled across the Rio Grande. The attempted murder charge holds a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and the use of a firearm charge could add up to 10 more years.

Davidson will likely be eligible for sentence reductions under the terms of his plea agreement.

Davidson, who underwent two mental competency evaluations before entering his plea, stood in shackles and answered woodenly as U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez asked him questions about his mental state. She also explained the charges against him, outlined his right to trial and discussed his plea agreement.

Davidson said he is taking medication.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Roberto Ramirez read the facts regarding Davidson's plea.

Aguilar and his partner, Hiram Sanabria-Blas, on April 25, responded to a report of an electronic sensor being tripped near the river while patrolling the Santa Rita subdivision, according to court documents.

Aguilar and Sanabria-Blas could see a man wearing a dark hat hiding behind a wooden fence, Ramirez said.

Because the agents had encountered drug traffickers in the area before, Aguilar exited the vehicle. Meanwhile, Sanabria-Blas took the vehicle and tried to cut off the person they had seen, to prevent him from escaping to the river.

Aguilar, on foot, made contact with Davidson, who said he was a U.S. citizen and presented Aguilar with his driver license. Because he thought Davidson was a "college kid," Aguilar let his guard down, Ramirez said. As the two were walking back toward the road, Davidson pulled out a pistol and pointed it at Aguilar, who drew his gun as well.

"The defendant had, by this time, gotten the draw," Ramirez said.

Davidson shot at Aguilar several times, hitting him in the left hand, Ramirez said. Aguilar tried to find cover and emptied his gun's clip, but did not hit Davidson, who escaped.

Davidson was arrested the next day in Nuevo Laredo while trying to climb a fence, and was charged with possessing a knife, Ramirez said.

A search of Davidson's home in Bryan yielded sketches depicting violent and sexual images, according to court documents. Before he was extradited to the U.S., Mexican officials gave a television news crew access to Davidson, according to reports. Images broadcast in Laredo show him forming a gun with his fingers and pressing them to his head, according to the reports.

Since his arrest, Davidson has been prescribed lithium and Prozac to treat bipolar disorder, according to court documents.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 27.

>>Aguilar tried to find cover and emptied his gun’s clip, but did not hit Davidson, who escaped.

That’s just sad. Agent Aguilar needs some range time.

No wonder there's a huge billboard outside Salado, TX on I35 advertising BP openings.
