ROCKVILLE, Md. -- The agency that oversees training and hiring standards for police departments in Maryland is looking at a proposal that would let noncitizens with green cards become police officers.

The proposal is being championed by Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger. He said it doesn't make sense that legal immigrants can join the U.S. military but can't become law enforcement officers.

The Maryland Police Training Commission could vote on the issue next month.

Critics said it would be difficult to check the backgrounds of noncitizens applying to be officers, and they said the proposal could allow terrorists to infiltrate police agencies.

I was born and raised in Maryland. I was Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi's next door neighbor briefly when her father was the corrupt Mayor of Baltimore. Her brother would later follow his father as a corrupt Mayor (and beat a criminal rap when the chief witness suddenly disappeared).

I thought Maryland politics was about as bad as they could get, back then. Boy was I wrong. The People's Republic of Maryland is going straight down the dumper. I'm glad I now live in North Carolina for the balance of my life. I feel very sorry for people who are still trapped in Maryland.

There are a lot of police departments that have recruited resident aliens to work. I worked with a couple that had heavy Irish accents. On second thought, quite a few had heavy Spanish accents too.

Green card fraud is rampant. Look up Nada Nadim Prouty. Her sister was also found guilty. One was a CIA/FBI agent, ( in reality, a Hezbollah spy) the other was an officer in the USMC.

It is rather difficult to "overstay" one's "now-expired green card," considering that (a) green cards (or, as they are more properly called, Permanent Resident cards) are issued to permanent residents, expire only after 10 years (which is a rather long time, considering that permanent residents are allowed to apply for citizenship after 5 years), and are essentially automatically renewed, provided that the individual maintains US residency.

We're not talking about illegal immigrants here, we're talking about legal immigrants who are well along the path to US citizenship.

You might want to read a bit more closely before declaring war. As a number of (but apparently not enough) replies have indicated, this proposal concerns legal permanent residents — not those who are in this country illegally.

What the blurb doesn’t explain, is that other jurisdictions who have enacted this policy have become “sanctuary cities” for illegal immigrants. Chicago is a good example. IOW, immigration law goes out the window.

The other danger that I see is well connected Mexican drug cartels placing their own people in law enforcement. That’s just one danger of improper employee vetting.

My point is that they are not "illegal" immigrants, as some were saying. They immigrated legally.
