Pat Robertson's Son Takes Over CBN

The Rev. Pat Robertson said Monday that his son, Gordon, has succeeded him as chief executive of the Christian Broadcasting Network, the most recent shift to a younger generation of leaders within major conservative Christian groups.

Robertson, 77, announced the transition on "The 700 Club," the Virginia-based network's flagship show, with Gordon, 49, on air with him.

"I thought that some of this day-to-day operation was important to pass down the line, especially to somebody a little more adept at figuring out the new technologies coming at such a bewildering speed to all of us," the elder Robertson said.

The network's board of directors voted over the weekend to name Gordon Robertson the CEO immediately. Pat Robertson will still be chairman of CBN and will continue to appear with his son on "The 700 Club." He will also remain president of Regent University, which he founded.

Gordon Robertson said in a phone interview with The Associated Press that his father had knee replacement surgery last spring and over the summer developed an irregular heartbeat that required surgery. But he is "in remarkably good health now."

"I call him the Iron Horse," Gordon Robertson said. "He doesn't have any quit in him."

Gordon Robertson is among several sons of major Christian leaders who have recently been charged with carrying on their father's work.

Has Pat said anything further about that very STRANGE endorsement? Does anyone know if he is working for Giuliani among Evangelicals? Any letters going out?

I was hoping that it would be his other son, Robbie Robertson.

Why is it that all the big-money evangelical groups all seem to have this sort of dynastic succession? Gordon Robertson follows Richard Roberts and Franklin Graham in inheriting the throne in the palace that Daddy built.

Apparently, primogeniture is dead everywhere but in the big evangelical churches.

Pat Robertson is more interested in his financial arrangements with Giuliani and the diamond suppliers.

He's a little tired. He pulled in to Nazareth feeling about half past dead. Just needing a place where he could lay his head. Said, "mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?" He just grinned and shook his hand. "No" was all he said.

Actually, that might have happened to Levon Helm. I'm always getting those guys mixed up.

Dude, you gotta get up pretty early in the morning to sneak a Band reference past me. "The Weight" used to be one of my signature karaoke numbers, back when I did that. The others were Otis Redding and Van Morrison.

I don't remember who it was, but some music critic described The Band as "four Canadians and their Arkansan secret weapon," the Arkansan being Levon Helm. If that weren't enough reason to love the man, there was his performance as Chuck Yeager's sidekick in one of my favorite movies, The Right Stuff.

"There was a demon, and he lived up in the air. And they said whoever challenged him would die."

"You got any Beeman's"
"I just might."
"Can you loan me a stick? I'll pay ya back later."
"Fair enough."

"Look! Over there! Is that a man?"
"You bet your ass it is."

Hard not to like the Mighty Hammond Organ. And’ “The Shape I’m In” is on their list of great songs. “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” is a cover, but it’s one of the tops on their list.

That is just one thing I so 'admired' about all of the biggie ministries --- all the sons take over for dad. I guess it is like growing up in any family business; around it long enough you just step right in and take over when dad retires.

Thinking outloud --- know of any ministries taken over by the daughters?

I can only think of one, and only sort of. M.L. King's daughter Beatrice is the only one of his kids who followed him into the clergy. And she's at a megachurch way east of town, not the Baptist church where her father and grandfather preached.

Beatrice King got a bit of press when she presided over the funeral of Coretta Scott King, her mother, Before and since, she stayed out of the limelight.
