State Treasurer John Kennedy, a recent convert to the Republican Party, announced Thursday that he will challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu when she seeks a third term in 2008.
Kennedy made the announcement, which has been widely expected since he bolted from the Democratic Party in August, on his Web site.
He also filed an official "statement of candidacy" with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday, which allows him to begin fundraising, but he said he would wait until early next year to start campaigning.

Hope he wins (any Republican being better than any Democrat), but I’m a bit suspicious of Kennedy. He’s a long time political ally of cold-cash-William Jefferson, who was by far his biggest backer when Kennedy ran for Senate as a Democrat against David Vitter in ‘04. In many ways, Kennedy is a protege of Jefferson’s.
Just because he calls himself a Republican doesn't mean he is one.
A RINO to be?
Wrong house of Congress.
As a Republican Senator he would have no effect on who is the Speaker of the House.
That’s interesting. Is he just trying to catch the Jindal wave?
How can you say that? Are you assuming we stay as the minority party?
Don’t count on it. Her voters, who mostly have moved to Houston and Atlanta, can still vote here in Louisiana. There was a big thing a few months back where it was decided that La. voters who had been displaced by Katrina could remain on the La. voter rolls, even though they were now registered in other states. I forget the cockamamy reason they gave, but the La. Republicans just rolled over and played dead instead of fighting the decision. I don’t hold out much hope for the Republican party in this state. Even though we got Jindahl, they put up pretty much no competition in key elections, particularly Jefferson Parish, and one race in particular they could have had if they had put up a viable candidate and given him the funds he/she would have needed to run a decent campaign. If I was a betting person, my money would be on Landrieu again.
Only the House of Representatives get to vote for Speaker. The Senate has nothing to do with that. We could have 100% Republicans in the Senate, but it wouldn’t affect the House.
oops, my bad. Of course.
Lordy, another Gov't School graduate heard from.
I HAD heard they were dropping Government/Civics classes, now we have proof.

I beleive the State will prevail in a court setting.
You can pretty much count on any Republican from Louisiana voting right down the Conservative line. Even Dem.s from LA (with the Exception of New Orleans and adjacent parishes)have a tough time voting liberal. With a lot of the old Dem. voters from NO having been relocated elsewhere, you can pretty much be assured that Kennedy will follow the Republican leadership.
I’m not sure. My understanding is that this was the settlement to the lawsuit, and that it was final. I haven’t heard anything about it being challenged. I believe this was the response to a challenge.
Thanks. I haven’t heard anything and haven’t really tried to find the status. I know the NAACP filed a lawsuit in Sept. to block the SOS from futher removing names from the voter roles. The SOS had sent out notices to some 53,000+ which they had determined were registered in both LA and some other state giving them 30 days to show proof of removing their voter registeration from the other state or their names would be removed from the LA roles. There had been some 21,000+ removed with almost 7,000 of those coming from Oleans Parish when the suit was filed.
The suit was based upon the SOS not getting permission from the Feds to take the action implemented. LA comes under the Civil Rights Act regarding how voters are handled. I think most of southern states if not all are included in this requirement. The suit futher asked that the claim be heard by a three judge federal panel.
The fact they registered in another state after moving from LA to me shows intent of voting in the new state. That is why I think LA would prevail in a court case. JMO
Anyway thanks for your input.
If voters were able to vote in both places, a White Republican would not have won and just flipped the NOLA Council for the first time in years.
Thats true but hed still add to numbers on our side. Anything to get Pelosi out of the catbird seat.
This won’t help. Maybe you are refering to Reid?
Sorry about that, next best thing would be getting rid of Dusty Harry.
I got to take cover from my next comment, but I truly would rather rid of Reid before Nancy. I think she is just ignorant but I think Reid is plain EVIL!!!!
