A British teacher has been found guilty in Sudan of insulting religion after she allowed her primary school class to name a teddy bear Muhammad. Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, has been sentenced to 15 days in prison and will then be deported.
She had been accused on three counts of insulting religion, inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs.
The Foreign Office said it was extremely disappointed by the verdict after a day-long hearing in Khartoum.
The Sudanese ambassador is being called back to the Foreign Office to explain the decision. Officials there say the mood has changed as a result of the verdict.
Staff complaint
Earlier, Foreign Secretary David Miliband had met the Sudanese ambassador to discuss the case, stressing it was an "innocent misunderstanding".
In September, Mrs Gibbons allowed her class of primary school pupils to name the teddy bear Muhammad.
The court heard that she was arrested on Sunday after another member of staff at Unity High School complained.
Sudan's top clerics had called for the full measure of the law to be used against Mrs Gibbons and labelled her actions part of a Western plot against Islam.
She could have faced up to 40 lashes.
The case had also prompted concern from the prime minister, Sudanese embassy officials in London and UK Muslim organisations, who all expressed the hope that Mrs Gibbons would be released.
She didn’t name the bear Muhammed, her pupils did. So why aren’t the kids getting the lashes instead of her?

The UK should withdraw all its citizens, including diplomatic staff, and ask for the return of its citizen teacher. When as and if they lash her, so be it. They should then send a diplomat to return her to the UK and then bomb those rag-heads even further into the dark ages wherein they presently reside. No foreign aid, no nothing (except ordiannce) should be sent to the country. The rag-heads do not understand contemporary values, diminished though they may be, but they fdo understand force.

If naming a stupid teddy bear “Mohammad” is a crime, what about 90% of Muslims who are named Mohammad? shouldn’t they all be lashed as well, or their parents? Nobody getting the lashes now. It has been dropped. She has 15 days. However, I think that the American Government should stop all aid to Sudan until they drop the 15 days also. Jesus (pronounced HAY-sus) is a pretty popular name among Hispanics.
Another thought. According to Muslims, Mohammed is the last of the prophets. Not only do they name their boys after him, they also name their boys after other Old Testament prophet that are mentions in the Koran as well. For example:
Yaya = Jesus
Dawood = David
Musa = Moses
etc.
If they are going to restrict use of prophet names, shouldn’t they restrict them all??
The real problem is that Mohammed had that name before he became a Muslim. It is really an Arabic name, just as the other names mentioned above are.
