GOVERNMENT ON ROCKS, SAYS CAMERON
Conservative leader David Cameron accused the Government of being "on the rocks" as he launched a fresh attack on its economic record.
He told a conference of business leaders that the UK needs a "big change" to cut regulations and help firms prosper.
Mr Cameron told the annual conference of the CBI that the Government has created centralised bureaucracies which have become incompetent and cannot be trusted.
He referred to recent scandals, including the Northern Rock crisis and money being "wasted" in departments such as the NHS.
"What we have learnt over the last few days is that when it comes to regulation and legislation, there is one law for Government and another one for everyone else.
"These people, they set up quangos, they pass laws, they introduce regulations, they insist on scrutiny and compliance - and whether it is their own Government debts or their own party machine, they just don't obey it."
Mr Cameron said there was a time in the life of every government when they have been in power for so long that complacency tips over into "arrogance".
He maintained that the Government has passed that point so "real change" is now needed.
Mr Cameron told the audience of business leaders from across the UK that a Conservative government would be different.
"We will be a government for the post-bureaucratic age - careful with public money, competent in public administration, conscious of the limitations of government."
PING
Well that is refreshing. Good for Cameron.
BTTT for great conservative ideas.
