Any minute now ... I’m waiting for the Dems to claim that ..
Oh yes Iraq is turning around but only because we threatened to remove the troops... Of course we never meant a word of it.. The troop withdraw threats were only done to entice the Iraqis to step up which oh golly Gee they have done..
Every Republican should be out in force screaming that if the Democrats had their way there would be NO troops in Iraq today and the country would have fallen to sectarian and Al-Qaida forces....
Period end of story.. Democrats continue to be on the wrong side of history.

"What worries me about the reaction of liberals and Democrats is not the skepticism, which is pardonable, but the dank and sinister impression they give that the worse the tidings, the better they would be pleased. The latter mentality isn't pardonable and ought not to be pardoned, either."
Excellent column! Unfortunately, Mr. Hitchens, that is not merely some "impression they give" that much/most of the left is rooting hard for disaster and defeat for America. They (a large proportion of people who call themselves liberals, progressives, brave [sic] men and women of the left, etc.) have proved over and over and over again in the past 4 years that they desire the defeat of the US in Iraq..... anything to weaken Bush/Cheney, evil capitalism, etc. I can not longer view any Democrats except Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller, et al with anything but contempt and disdain. They have tried their best to weaken and undermine the USA at war because they thought a world with a chastened, hesitant USA and a discredited Bush/Cheney administration would be far preferable (in their eyes) to a successful, triumphant America looking stronger than ever on the world stage.

I’m afraid that you’re right.
The precedence is the fall of the Berlin Wall & collapse of the Soviet Union. People of the same ilk as today's Iraq war opponents attacked Reagan relentlessly for his bold aggression against the Soviets. When the wall came down, they just claimed that it was going to happen anyhow. They say the same thing today.
