Effort underway to recall Arpaio
East Valley Tribune/ MSNBC ^ | Nov. 15, 2007 | DENNIS WELCH

Posted on 11/19/2007 8:00:34 AM PST by 3AngelaD

A group has pledged to spend about $1,000 to gather hundreds of thousands of signatures in an effort to recall Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas. The Arizonans for the U.S. Constitution and Recall of Joe Arpaio, filed paperwork Oct. 29 to recall the county's top law enforcement officials, according to county records. According the documents, the group has pledged to spend less than $500 on each of the two recalls - a small amount money considering size of the task.

The organization will have to collect 283,300 valid signatures from registered voters in Maricopa County in order to put the question of recalling Arpaio on a future ballot, said Yvonne Reed, a spokeswoman for the county. She added it will take 252,039 valid signatures to do the same with Thomas. In both cases, the group has 120 days from the filing date to collect the signatures. If successful, Reed said it would most likely be on the November 2008 ballot.

Thomas declined to comment.

Arpaio said he wasn't worried about the recall.

"This is America. If you can get the 285,000 signatures to recall me, then be my guest. Good luck," Arpaio said...

Leonard Clark, an organizer of the petition drive, was unavailable for comment. But William Crum, the group's treasurer, said many people are unhappy with efforts by the sheriff to enforce federal immigration laws. He said Arpaio shouldn't be spending county money to enforce federal laws.

Apparently the guy organizing this is also an anti-American, anti-Iraq war nutjob. I'd like an ANSWER to the question of who is bankrolling his effort.

If there is one thing we can’t tolerate, it’s a law enforcement officer who enforces the law. Who does this Sheriff Joe character think he is?

I'd like an ANSWER to the question of who is bankrolling his effort.

Since they're only spending $1000, my guess would be nobody.

IIRC, Sheriff Joe was elected by an overwhelming majority of the county -- something in the 60-70% range if I'm not mistaken.

Let’s see now, Joe Arpaio is national figure frequently interviewed across the country on news and programs and radio. So now they want to make immigration a national issue for the November elections. Do I have that right? Bring it on baby, bring it on.

It’ll NEVER happen.

Arpaio is a great sheriff and is doing a great job. He has great ideas and is doing a hell of lot more things that help AZ more than any other gubbmit official, IMO.

Which would be a waste of time since the only valid signatures on this recall are those of valid registered voters. People in AZ should have fun with this. Sign their stupid petition but sign it "Ho Chi Min" or "Joe Stalin" or some other fake name. Keep them going wasting their time and money on the recall to no where.

This is probably connected to the bizarre nightime arrests of two officials from the New Times, for publicly revealing the details of a grand jury supoena. The paper suspects Arpaio of shady land dealings and has published his home address for years in the print edition and online, making the point that the address is widely available.

The grand jury supoened the name of every visitor to the paper's website, together with information on whatever other websites those surfers might have visited. The paper publicly revealed the absurdly broad supoena and two higher ups were arrested in the middle of the night for revealing it. Why is it even a crime for the target of a supoena to reveal it?

While my overal opinion of Arpaio is very good, this particular affair seems like an abuse of power, particularly on the part of Dennis Willenchik, the outside contract attorney for the DA's office.

A multi-agency task force arrested 10 people Thursday in an ongoing attempt to crack down on fake IDs and prevent undocumented immigrants from getting jobs.

Undercover agents were looking for people selling Social Security cards, Arizona driver’s licenses, resident alien cards, Mexican driver’s licenses and consular identity cards. (snip)

The different little town police departments arresting an illegal immigrant will give that II or IA, whatever you want to call them, to the Sheriff’s Department. Whereby, Sheriff Joe handles them, and handles them well — in tent city or over to INS.

If I were an illegal alien, I think I would go to INS. Tough and tumble Sheriff Joe feeds them enough, hydrates them enough, and they can live in tent city. The guy and gal prisoners have to wear pink boxer shorts. True.

So if you’re in Maricopa County and you see a hitchhiker with pink underware, and you want to do someone a favor by picking them up (I never do), make sure they don’t have pink underware.

GO, JOE! He always says “There plenty of room in tent city.”

The last Arpaio thread here on FR drew a couple of Joe-haters who said he was too mean to the crooks.

Too mean isn't the issue. The question is effectiveness. That and Arpaio's dedication to the Greater Glory of Arpaio.

Arpaio has passed a lot of feel-good, get-tough measures, and they do have the concrete benefit of saving the county money. But they haven't brought the crime rate down, in what I've read -- if anyone has hard data to the contrary, please enlighten me.

In criminal justice, I've long observed that it's often more important to act tough than to get results.

All that said, those are policy and electoral questions, not grounds for a recall, and the constitutional argument is silly.

I haven't heard of any court orders, but that would not surprise me.

The history is something like this....

When Joe Arpaio was elected, the biggest problem he had was jail overcrowding. (As the Sheriff of an urban county, jail is the most important thing he does.) So, he went to the local national guard, and asked about purchasing a bunch of old army-surplus tents. He has plenty of land available, easily secured with fencing, he just wanted some makeshift shelters. Well, it turned out that he could get tons and tons of free tent space.

So, tent city was born. Famous for its "Spartan" conditions, it became the perfect place to warehhouse people who think Jail is just swell with the 3 hots and a cot. Har! It's cold-cut meals in a bag, they're called "Ladmo Bags" (It's a local thing, you'd have to be from Phoenix to get it). The meal cost is something like 50 cents per day per criminal.

Sure, federal lawsuits were filed about the simply horrible conditions in tent city, but they all failed, and the rest is history. Last time there was a Superbowl in town, he put up a big "Vacancy" sign over the complex to assure our visitors there was plenty of room at the jail if they can't stay civil.

Joe Arpaio has done all kind of stuff since then to ensure the prisoners never feel like it's a great place to be. When people were literally walking out of the place with Maricopa County Jail underwear, he started dying them pink, along with the socks.

There's more story, but that's all I can think of right now.

I think it is more a PR stunt than substance.

It is to play this for the coyotes who depend on illegals to earn their money.

“see the gringo sheriff is going to be recalled give me 2000 dollars and a few hours with your daughter to bring you across the border.”

This is also to send a message to other less strong local officials.

Russell Pearce is almost as anti-illegal immigration as Randy Graf...maybe even more so.

Pearce is in the state Senate and routinely brings up legislation aimed at sending illegals home - no jobs, no benefits, no bail, etc.

Arizona has some new voting laws. They highlight the problem of giving ILLEGALS a drivers license. If they have a valid Arizona driver’s license, they can go on-line and register on-line. When you show up to vote in any election in Arizona, you’re required to show identification. In lieu of the photo IDs, a person who wishes to vote may bring any two different items from the list below to the polling place, as long as those items have the person’s name and address on them: Utility bill dated within 90 days of the date of the election. A utility bill may be for electric, gas, water, solid waste, sewer, telephone, cellular phone, or cable television.
Bank or credit union statement that is dated within 90 days of the date of the election
It seems to me many ILLEGALS qualify under these forms of IDs to vote.

Is that all Federal laws or just those Clark doesn't like? I'm sure there are many Federal laws county officers enforce. I don't know when their next election would be but, seems to me, it would be a waste of taxpayers funds to have a recall. Is this group willing to reimburse the taxpayers when both are reelected? What's the hurry? Who are they hurting?
