We had numerous Canadians in boot camp in 1967 I guess they could all have had green cards but I doubt it. I don’t won’t to get into a discussion about this because I am not by any means an expert on it. It is possible that one might be put on a fast track for a green card if the intent is to join the military, just speculation on my part.

No need to speculate, Note: Currently, aliens cannot volunteer for the U.S. military unless they have permanent resident alien status. Technically, illegal aliens are supposed to register for the draft and in wartime they could be drafted.

And no you don't get on an expedited path to receive a green card if you intend to join the military. That is putting the cart before the horse. You need a green card first.

My ancestral father marched all the way from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Fort Beausejour to fight the English in 1777. He was offered US citizenship. He refused and stayed Canadian. He didn't particularly care for the Brits.

I took the leap and immigrated. But I wonder , if a man or woman fights for the US, and put their life on the line, why not grant them a green card? People who have money can get a green card simply by investing in real estate development, so for those who have money , there is an easy road to US citizenship.

I agree that military service alone should not result in citizenship.

But a soldier who has exchanged shots with the enemy, and risked his life for America should be granted a green card if he requested, but not citizenship right away. He needs not only to open the door by courage and sacrifice, but prove he is worthy to stay. After 5 years of continuous law abiding residence in the US, he could apply for citizenship.
