I did not say that Priest were forced to will their estates to the church but at the time the vows for chastity was enforced the it was common practice for clergy with out heirs to will their property to the church (and is today).
Very few orders have a vow of poverty. Many Priest own their own homes quite a few die wealthy. I know one personally with lake front property on Lake Erie in the Cleveland area.
Thinking back to school discipline in those years, I suspect part of the abuse that ruined these poor boys psyches was how she rapped their knuckles (and other body parts) with a ruler if they didn’t get it right.
