California Gas Prices Reach $5 In Some Areas
KSBW-TV ^ | November 7, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The American Automobile Association of California said some drivers are now paying up to $5 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.

Crude oil prices hit an all-time high Wednesday, above $98 a barrel and analysts said with worldwide oil demand rising -- it is still not clear just how high prices will go.

In Salinas, AAA recorded an average of $3.39 per gallon. Santa Cruz is at an average of $3.37 per gallon.

KSBW checked and found gas in Gorda, south of Big Sur, is even higher. Drivers there are paying $5 for gas.

Over the past two weeks gas has gone up 15 cents in California alone, according to AAA.

Most of this is the fault of the California Assembly and their weird laws, forcing the oil companies to manufacture different types of gasoline just for California.

Ah yes, the wonderful Golden State. I’m so glad we moved our family out of there five years ago. My wife and I were born in San Diego and it was a great place to grow up in the 50s and 60s. But as I said we left five years ago, we’ve never been back, and have no plans to go back.

Yep and that "somebody" was the liberals in this state. They gerrymandered the districts to lock in a majority in the Assembly and are heavily funded by the entertainment industry and Government Unions.

A better way of classifying the voters would be "the Entertainment Industry and Government Unions in California got what they paid for".

I don’t live in Calif., our gas prices are going up also. Most people are silently waiting for the economy to collapse soon, so there is no real reaction. Upstate economy is so depressed already that it were not for high fuel prices we probably wouldn't notice anyway.

Where do you live? I’m in Ohio, we’ve seen a increase, but not to bad so far. Paying 3.06 for the low grade gasoline today.

Even at $4.00/gal, most people still pay more in Fed taxes than fuel costs. The big worry is the price of diesel, which drives our economy, and moves much more directly with the world price of oil.
This is why we should be punching holes offshore and in ANWR.

Must be because demand is up so much over a few weeks ago. Either that or a couple of high-producing wells just went dry. It HAS to be something in the supply-demand chain, because gasoline is just another free-market commodity, you know.

The long and short of it is that we've bound ourselves as hostages to idiot environmentalism.

Environmentalism says, "No more drilling."

Environmentalism says, "No new refineries."

Environmentalism says, "Make 57 varieties for sale in fractional markets all over the country."

And environmentalism COSTS US BANK!

Still, we're not out there with scythes and pitchforks tarring and feathering environmentalists, so I guess we must ENJOY this great exercise in economic self-flagellation, eh??

Maybe not you or I, but enough damned fools are happy about it all that mustering the impetus for constructive change has been ongoing for 35 years, and there STILL isn't enough force behind it to support Washington D.C. rescuing the economy by overtly telling the environmentalist whackjobs to go screw themselves.

Ahh, well; next universe, maybe.

I had tried everything too...hypnosis, sinus injections, the patch...but I have been smoke free for 15 weeks now using that new prescription pill Chantix and have talked to many people that have quit using that. It's expensive...$104 for the 1 month starter pack, but it is worth it in the long run. I was able to quit after only three weeks on it and I had smoked for 41 years. The only downside is you have to take it with food or it will make you extremely nauseous. I quit because they were talking about increasing the Federal tax by $1/pack.

Back to the topic...gas around San Antonio is now running about $2.99/gal, up from $2.75 a couple of days ago when I filled up my truck. I'm thankful hubby gets a truck allowance on his job, his truck is older and therefore eats more gas.

From my "Sticker Shock- $3 a gallon gas?" file...

I have covered, ( Or, as Seamole puts it... -backhoe's pseudoblog--... ) pseudo-blogged, these issues for years, so allow me to drop out of Lurk and Link mode for a rare bit of commentary-- we all need to get serious about our dependency on foreign sources of energy, and use our own resources.

Our consumer-based economy is driven by and dependent upon readily-available, reliable energy-- choke that off, and we'll all be back to using one rotary dial phone in the dining room, watching one TV in the living room, and driving one car per family-- probably a Hudson Hornet or a Nash Metropolitan...

We need to

1) end the nonsensical ban on offshore drilling off California and Florida--read and weep:

Castro Plans to Drill 45 Miles from US Shores, But We Can't

2) build a lot of next-generation nuclear power plants, not just for electricity, but for any process requiring heat, power, or steam.
And if we replaced our existing nuclear plants with
this one there would be significant benefits.

3) end Jimmy Carter's idiotic ban on recycling nuclear waste, and reprocess the stuff rather than fighting over where to bury it. Europe has done this for decades.-- what to do with spent nuclear fuel? Answer here:

 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1468321/posts?page=50#50

hattip: Mike (former Navy Nuclear Engineer)

4) use the 300-500 years worth of coal we have on our own land, using the new clean-coal technology.
-Clean Coal Centre--

5) and finally, there's nothing wrong with conservation, we should all practice it- but you can't conserve your way out of a shortage. Nor is there anything wrong with "alternative" energy sources- except they don't supply the vast ( not to mention readily-available ) amounts of power we need at a price competitive to more conventional sources. Then again, there is this to ponder:

Energy From the Gulf Stream
http://www.energy.gatech.edu/presentations/mhoover.pdf

Not to mention, this new idea:

Irish Ready To Harness Tidal Power

We do need to get serious about this before we get strangled by a bunch of petty thieves and dictators who don't like us much.

My collection of energy-related links:

Sticker Shock-$3 a gallon gas? Click the picture:

And kindly note, and note well-- the first reply to this post ( when gas was $1.45 a gallon ) was derisive... so, who's laughing now?

( And, to honk my own horn, here is a comment from another board on this subject: )

I happened to be going through a post by "backhoe" and followed his link to a thread he posted on 3-17-04. Pretty good thread titled "Sticker Shock-$3 a gallon gas? Some links" that was prophetic, and what do you know, the first reply was Why don't you stop panicking and solve problems that exist posted by "XXX" Backhoe has some very good posts, he mostly lurks and when he does post it is worth the read. From the reply that"XXX" made he appears to be something of a corn-fed kneejerker, even more so with two years to prove how right "backhoe" was.

Vest-Pocket Summary:

1- drill for gas and oil like crazy- onshore, offshore, and in Alaska
2- go nuclear for power
3- convert stationary plants to clean coal technology or Next-Gen Nuclear
4- slash taxes and regulations like crazy...

Check out Chantix. Every smoker I know that has used it was successful in quitting. Including my 20 year old son. It takes about a week for the initial low dose to block the pleasurable dopamine release from smoking. My wife's supervisor just started it last week. She walked outside for a smoke break, lit it up and realized she really didn't want it any more. Short and final smoke break.

My neighbor just ditched his Excursion sized SUV for a Honda Accord Hybrid. He hasn't had it long enough to get any good stats yet. My Mercury Mariner Hybrid (2008) is averaging 28.5 MPG.
