On the matter of Terri Schiavos right to life, which occupied the attention of the media and Congress in 2005, Thompson called that a family decision, in consultation with their doctor, and the federal government should not be involved. Thompson added, the less government the better. ...
In the case of Terri Schiavo, a severely disabled person, there was a family dispute. Her estranged husband wanted her to die and he eventually succeeded in starving her to death. Her parents had wanted her to live. ...
There was no moral justification for killing Terri because she had an inherent right to life and there was no clear evidence that she wanted food and water withdrawn. The morally correct course of action would have been to let her family take care of her. Nobody would have been harmed by that.
Meet the Press host Tim Russert brought up the death of Thompsons daughter, who reportedly suffered a brain injury and a heart attack after an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Apparently Thompson and members of his family made some decisions affecting her life and death. Thompson described it as an end-of-life issue.
Bobby Schindler says he doesnt know what the circumstances precisely were in that case and that he sympathizes with what Thompson went through. However, he says that it is not comparable at all to his sisters case.
What no one is recognizing, he told me, is that my sisters case was not an end-of-life issue. She was simply and merely disabled. Terri wasnt dying. She was only being sustained by food and water. She had no terminal illness. She wasnt on any machines. All she needed was a wheelchair and she could have been taken anywhere. She didnt even need to be confined to a bed.

I couldn't agree more.
The excruciating, two-week murder of Terri Schiavo should have been stopped by Governor Jeb Bush.
He’s not “finished.”
In fact he’s soon to be surging.
The less government the better...this makes him done ?
I think not
I’m pretty sure this election won’t turn on the candidate’s position on Terri Schiavo.
I don’t know anyone here who is flaming Terri.
I still think though...that it is quite possible that God’s intent was to take her in 1991. That’s not to say that Michael Schiavo isn’t a bastard anyway...
You wish.
O’Reilly went through the chances of the candidates tonight, mentioning Giuliani, McCain, Romney, and when he got to Thompson, he said that he was out of it; no chance of being the nominee.
Then they go to a commercial, and it’s one of Fred Thompson. What timing! I’m sure any good the commercial would have done for Fred and his chances was negated by O’Reilly’s commentary just seconds earlier. Thompson’s campaign should probably ask for its ad money back.
Wishful thinking!
Well if it does, let’s hear what ALL of the other candidates have to say about it , not just Fred .
I hope this posting doesn’t reopen old wounds. I could not understand why the husband couldn’t have just let the parents care for Teri. But he didn’t.
I don’t think it is the business of the federal govt to get involved. I am sorry. That’s why we have state courts and the 10th amendment.
Conservatives cannot have it both ways. We cannot expect the govt to keep out of our wallets and then get involved with something as personal as this.
Don’t know about you, but I don’t really put much weight to what o’rielly says most of the time.
Yeah, right.
You are forgetting a crucial component: husband and parents had competing POV’s regarding her care.
That said the State had to intervene and intervened wrongly. The state must always rule in favor of life.
Thompson is a likable man who should not be our next President. There are worse alternatives to a Thompson Presidency, but still....
OReilly went through the chances of the candidates tonight.. Fred had no chance..
This from the guy who called Freerepublic a racist site. Who gives a crap what he thinks or says for that matter. Mr. entertainment for sure.
For the record, I am not a fan of Fred.
Sheesh. Does FNC PAY their anchors to trash Fred and pimp Rudy or what?
What is with these “Fred has no chance” people yet they talk as if McCain and Willard do?
He’s IN SECOND PLACE, people!!!
Lame-O-Rama! From now until next November!
Who “should?”
And who “will?”
I don't disagree at all. Perhaps the state of Florida had an interest, but not the Feds, at least according to my copy of the Constitution.
If we want a return to Federalism, we have to start by being consistent.

Pass the popcorn : )
Tagline B U M P
Lancey, I’m with you. The Terry Schaivo case was bungled by the State of Florida and in the State of Florida, from the county level to the State level and back. The outcome was an outrage against human dignity and life. All true.
Yet, the answer Fred Thompson gave on Sixty Minutes was correct, even if it could have been expanded upon.
The harsh truth is that Federalism means that States can and will make mistakes, and the Federal government ought to and must stand aside.
When state governments exceed their authority and act in a tyrannical and autocratic fashion, whose job is it to step in and stop state governments from abusing their power?
“I could not understand why the husband couldnt have just let the parents care for Teri. But he didnt.”
We all know people like this. Control freak that had to win.
Only the observation that either subject can reduce FReepers into right-wing versions of moonbats within ten posts.
Excuse me, that was Meet the Press..... Oops...
Do any rational conservatives still listen to that blow-hard?
I hate it when the left calls him a Conservative. The guy is simply a self promoter always tooting his own horn. He is not a Conservative... not even close. He's more like Clinton -- playing the game for all it's worth.
Heres where most of the Terri Schiavo money went:
These funds, the result of a malpractice suit, were meant solely to provide for Terri Schiavos care and rehabilitation.
=======================================================================================
Atty. Gwyneth Stanley - $10,668.05
Atty. Deborah Bushnell - $65,607.00
Atty. Steve Nilson - $7,404.95
Atty. Pacarek - $1,500.00
Atty. Richard Pearse (GAL) - $4,511.95
Atty. George Felos - $397,249.99
1st Union/South Trust Bank $55,459.85
Michael Schiavo - $10,929.95
Total: $545,852.34
Virtually as soon as Michael Schiavo received the monies from the medical malpractice claim involving his wife, Terri Schindler-Schiavo,
he withheld all therapy and rehabilitation services from her.
Terri Schiavo had sustained a serious brain injury as the result of a suspicious incident in their home in 1990 and in 1992,
her husband had filed claims against several of her former doctors, claiming her collapse was caused by a misdiagnosis.
He received over $1.5 million in 1993 including $750,000 which had been specifically earmarked by the trial jury for Terris rehabilitation based on a life expectancy of 50 years.
Mary and Bob Schindler Sr., her parents, consulted a St. Petersburg attorney about removing Michael Schiavo as their daughters guardian and discussed the case at length with him.
Unfortunately, the Schindlers did not have the amount of money the attorney demanded as a retainer to take the case.
That attorney became the judge in the case-----a totally prohibited conflict of interest.
Thereafter, the attorney-judge approved the hiring of George Felos as the attorney for Schiavo to be paid from the trust fund and the stage was set for her judicial homicide.
The judge wasnt George W. Greer.
It was Mark I. Shames.

Regarding Terri's Hospice Certificate for Woodside Hospice House

NOTA BENE: 1) NO physician signed this Certificate for Woodside Hospice House.
ERGO: Michael Schiavo and Greer acted without a medical license.
They had to murder her and cover it up.
2) Examination of the "Terminal Diagnosis" reveals.
It appears to have been changed after the fact. It was clearly written while the
rest was typed, AND in a handwriting different from the rest.
In medical records, that is a sign of tampering. You can bet whiteout is probably underneath.
3) The Certificate states she will live less than 6 months.
Yet they took $$$ from the insurance company(ies?)
and you know the rest.
ERGO: They apparently had to murder Terri to cover it up.

He’s not “finished” as far as I’m concerned. I totally agree with him on this - the feds should have stayed out of it, even though it was heartrending.
Horse Crap.
Voters
Why would ANYONE interfer in a family decision? And why is Fred Thompson being discussed about what happened? He has expressed his opinion which people can agree with or not.
Shouldn’t have anything to do with his being a candidate.
And the Grand Prize goes to Mr. Monk!
Note to Tailgunner Joe: Better luck next time.
Well said. I have been watching the news off and on all day and there seems to be a complete blackout of Fred Thompson. Anyone else notice this?
Fred is correct. though the Schiavo case muddies the waters on this matter
The voters. If the voters elect crooks, they deserve to be robbed. If they elect killers, they'll get what they deserve there, as well. And if they don't like who the other guy elects, they can always move.
I believe the Democrat candidate will win the election because the Demcrats are happier with their candidates. Someone like Hunter could unite most of us, but he might lose some on the trade issue.
The MSM is acting like he isn’t even a candidate. The #2 candidate in almost every state and is totally ignored. Very telling.
“Hes IN SECOND PLACE, people!!!”
But, but,..... Pat Robertson endorsed Rudy
LOL, we need the “Not this sh*t” again”, graphic.
Oh goodness. I see you're in for a Constimatushional lesson by those whose misconstruing of the Constitution is second to none.
BTW I agree with you as it is the correct Constitutional point as understood by the Framers.
In my opinion it is unfortunate that the late Reed Irvine chose Cliff Kincaid as his successor at AIM. Mr. Irvine was always coolheaded and convincing, while Mr. Kincaid has struck me on more than one occasion as rather hot-tempered and unreasonable.
Before the infamous Roe v. Wade decision, abortion was never a federal issue, and the 50 states handled it in diverse ways. But now it seems that only a national ban on abortion will satisfy Cliff Kincaid, and anyone, such as Fred Thonmpson, who favors federalism, is “finished”. One wonders what Cliff Kincaid would have thought of Abraham Lincoln in 1860; I don’t doubt that he would have denounced him for trying to appease the South.
Growing up on grandpa’s farm in the Ozarks, I saw gramps plow with an mule that was much like the author. Grandpa called the animal, dumb ass.
