NEW YORK — A Jewish professor found a swastika on her office door at Columbia University on Wednesday, the latest symbol of bias and hatred found at the school in recent weeks, police said.

Elizabeth Midlarsky discovered the swastika painted on her door at Teachers College, a graduate school of education affiliated with Columbia. Madonna Constantine found a noose on her office door at the college on Oct. 9. Both are professors of psychology and education.

The New York Police Department's hate crime unit is investigating both incidents. No arrests have been made, police said.

School leaders said they felt the college was being targeted because of its "deep, multicultural work."

"We are committed to maintaining that tradition by operating as an open, tolerant community," Teachers College President Susan Fuhrman and Provost Tom James said in a statement. "We will not be intimidated by these incidents."

Teachers College, founded in 1887, describes itself as the nation's oldest and largest graduate school of education.

Midlarsky's research focuses in part on altruism, and she has studied heroic rescues during the Holocaust. Her profile on the Teachers College Web site says she is working on a project on school violence.

Midlarsky did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The discovery of the noose roiled the Ivy League campus, and students, faculty and administrators had denounced the incident targeting Constantine, who has written extensively about race.

A few days later, a caricature of a yarmulke-wearing man and a swastika were found on a university bathroom stall door. Police at the time said there was no reason to believe the two incidents were linked.

Police have said they believe one or more copycats could be responsible.

Nooses, racially charged symbols of lynchings in the Old South, have appeared in a number of recent incidents around the country.

Columbia U deserves this publicity since they have declined to cooperate with the FBI. If I were the FBI, I would just ask for the security tapes, and when they refuse to turn them over, I would announce that the investigation is over.

I think a swastika or noose is placed on their doors as being representative of what these profs are doing in universities, i.e., indoctrination, just like the Nazis and the KKK did to the youth. A week after a reported campus hate crime drew national attention, sparked protests and shut down the prestigious Claremont Colleges, police on Wednesday called the incident a hoax staged by a professor who slashed tires, shattered windows and spray-painted racist graffiti on her own car.

Claremont McKenna College psychology professor Kerri Dunn, who had told police that her car was vandalized as she spoke at a March 9 forum on racism, was identified by two eyewitnesses as the person who damaged the auto, authorities said Wednesday.

She was not arrested, but Claremont Police Lt. Stan Van Horn said the case would be sent to the Los Angeles County district attorney for review and that the likely charge would be filing a false police report, a misdemeanor. The FBI said she might face more serious felony charges of lying to federal investigators.

Campus leaders last week had condemned the vandalism as a hate crime, shut down the Claremont consortium of colleges for a day of anti-hate rallies and called in FBI investigators. The police contention that Dunn staged the incident triggered a wave of anger against her Wednesday and fears that students would become cynical about racism.

Before the last presidential election we saw swastika painted on vehicles with Bush Cheney stickers on them. West Chester Pa. had a moveon.org organization that was active and ugly. They made sure that yard signs were marked as well as many vehicles. My daughter refused to put another Bush Cheney sign on either vehicle after they had the house paint removed. The citizens did not like having the middle finger salute given to them in front of the courthouse as they drove by. I imagine the SOB’s will be back in 2008.

Did the university ever release the security videos to the police? Last I heard, they were refusing to produce them to assist the police in catching those involved. I thought it was very strange that a rash of noose sightings occured at the same time as the Jena 6 media witch hunt.
