Report: Schwarzenegger says marijuana is not a drug (spokesman says governor was joking)
AP on Bakersfield Californian ^ | 10/28/07 | AP

Posted on 10/28/2007 8:05:49 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says marijuana is not a drug, a British magazine reported Monday. But his spokesman said the governor was joking.

Schwarzenegger told the British edition of GQ magazine that he had not taken drugs, even though the former bodybuilder and Hollywood star has acknowledged using marijuana in the 1970s and was shown smoking a joint in the 1977 documentary "Pumping Iron."

"That is not a drug. It's a leaf," Schwarzenegger told GQ. "My drug was pumping iron, trust me."

Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger's press secretary, said the governor made the comments in a lighthearted context, noting his interviewer was Piers Morgan, one of the judges on "America's Got Talent." Morgan is a former British newspaper editor.

"The governor was doing an interview with the host of 'America's Got Talent,' the newest version of the gong show," McLear said. "I think it's important to keep that quote in the context of the environment where it was said."

"Of course the governor understands marijuana is a drug. It's like when he goes on Leno or the Daily Show, if you took something like that out of context, it might seem shocking but it was in a silly entertainment context," he added.

In the interview for the magazine's December issue, Schwarzenegger refused to condemn politicians who decline to answer questions about drug use.

"What would you rather have? A politician taking stuff and not saying, but making the best decisions and improving things? Or a politician who names all the drugs he or she has taken but makes lousy decisions for the country?" Schwarzenegger was quoted as saying.

"A politician's job is to do what's best for the people and to improve the country, the economy, the environment. Why should I care if a politician takes sleeping pills every night so long as he can do his job?" he added.

In the same interview, Schwarzenegger listed former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who left office in June, as one of the greatest leaders in history, alongside former South African President Nelson Mandela, Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Asked if he would include President Bush on the list, Schwarzenegger - a Republican - said: "I would say that I was ... very fond of his father. I worked for President Bush Sr., and he was a great man."

"I think his son does some great things and there are some other things I don't agree with."

Let him submit to a urine test, like others have to in order to get a job, just to see if he is joking.

I really don’t care if he does, but don’t make a statement like that as a Governor only to have a spokesperson say it was a joke. All the billions we spend on fighting War on Drugs and locking people up for having “pot”, etc, on them would not think it is a joke.

Arnie is a great liberal nitwit.

It's true. Under Virginia colonial law, a landowner with more than a certain amount of acreage was required to devote a certain percentage to the cultivation of hemp.

Hemp fibres were used to make paper, clothing, rope -- and most importantly -- cotton bagging. Cotton bolls would not adhere to the surface of a hemp cotton bag, so that simplified the problem of dumping the contents of the bag into the cotton gin.

Also, the analgesic properties of the hemp plant were also known.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp (cannabis sativa) on a production scale. Betsy Ross made the first American flag out of hemp (cannabis sativa). Marijuana is cannabis sativa. Ruderalis and Indica varieties are less frequent in this country.

Governor Swartzenegger needs now to make a tough choice. He can’t fool everybody forever with his love fest with liberals while trying speciously to claim he’s a conservative.

There he is in that video smoking pot {www.forarnoldssake.com) He says nothing about Federal agents busting pot smoking medical marijuana users in California. He and Jerry Brown (his attorney general) refuse to answer the voters who voted overwhelmingly for medical marijuana. Why the silence? Why the hypocrisy? Look!—Do you not see the video of Arnold smoking pot? What the hell does this guy stand for other then for everybody and everything? Why doesn’t he just get a sex change operation in San Francisco and change his name to “Hillary Clinton” or something.

Washington's Mount Vernon journal showed that he took the time to separate the male and female plants, which meant he was trying to make sensimilla.

In the evening, Washington would take out his false teeth, make a tea out of hemp and wash it over his gums. This apparently gave him some relief.

It wasn't until the Sixties that science discovered that the active ingredient in hemp -- tetrahydrocannibinol or THC -- was only barely soluble in water. Thus, Washington only got a little relief.

THC, however, is very soluble in alcohol. Had Washington heated the hemp leaves with wine, he would have gotten quite a bit more relief. Washington wasn't the kind of guy who hung around the slave quarters, but if he had, he would have picked up an important bit of African folklore -- that the best way to get that fast, fast, fast relief from the hemp plant was to burn the plant and inhale its vapors.

He settled for tea.

> Go to Google (or your preferred search engine) type in ‘Betsy Ross hemp’. Pick from the plethora of links that are fed back.

(I should preface this by saying I suspect it is true. But that's not the same as having a source.)

Not to be too picky, but not one of the hits in the first two pages of Google output have any authoritative statement with regard to the Betsy Ross flag being made of hemp. Many references to "reportedly", but without a reference to the report or reporter. All the ones that don't contain a caveat or qualifier are from pro-pot sites (and one from a 9-generations-removed relative) and while that doesn't make them liars per se, their similar lack of citations doesn't fill me with confidence.

The Wikipedia page is devoid of mention of "hemp". Snopes.com doesn't appear to have an article one way or the other. Elsewhere, lots of mentions, no sources.

If I've missed something solid, like a quote from a letter of one of the Founders or someone else in a position to know the facts, let me know. Otherwise, being by nature skeptical, I'm inclined to think it's a widespread and popular rumor, based on what I've seen so far.

That said, I have no reason to doubt its truth, either. It would make sense that the first Flag was made from hemp. I'm just looking for a source for the claim.

What do you’re sources claim the material was? Hemp (cannabis sativa) was the material of choice for numerous applications at that period in time. I’ve never seen anything refuting hemp as the original flag material. If you come across an alternate composition claim please let me know.

Yeah, that's for sure. And to think, there were well-known Republicans promoting him for President just a few years ago. We'd have to amend the Consitution for him to run, but they were willing to do it.

Celebrities as a general rule make very poor politicians. And they are too fickle when you are looking for their support. They're too often more concerned with what their fans might think than what they can bring to the campaign.

Sorry, you misunderstand my question. I'm not doubting you, or the story; I just would like to have some historically dependable (ideally contemporary) evidence of the first Flag's composition.

I rather suspect it was help. I don't have any evidence to the contrary. I was merely asking for evidence to support it, other than hearsay. There's a ton of hearsay. But not one single contemporary (time of the American Revolution) or other authoritative source saying something along the lines of, "Betsy Ross made our new Flag out of hemp."

To see what I mean, consider: Support there was a prevalent rumor that George Washington had had a love affair, and it was referred to in many informal places, and a lot of sexually-oriented publications wrote about it in articles, but there were no contemporary sources, and unlike (say) Jefferson's likely dalliance with his slave, no offspring. If I wanted to repeat the story, it would not be unreasonable to see if there were dependable sources for it, not just "lack of evidence to the contrary".

It is not unreasonable to differentiate between rumor/hearsay and historically dependable sources. That's all. A single sentence in a letter penned by anybody in a position to know firsthand, would be sufficient for my purposes, actually.

Not "conclusive", unless we have at least one supporting source. What we have at present is lack of evidence to the contrary, which is sufficient to "infer", but not to conclude. Just because there's no evidence refuting a claim that, say, George Washington had an affair, that is not conclusive evidence that he did.

The poster distinctly wrote "hemp" which is true. The mid-Atlantic states were built on tobacco and hemp production.

Shipping in the age of sail required thousands of yards of rope and hemp rope was the strongest and best. After the Revolution hemp was still a major crop, grown up and down river valleys from New England to Florida and really didn't take a down-turn until the age of steam and iron ships.

In many places, like the Merrimack valley in MA and NH, the stuff still grows along the banks every year.

What we have at present is lack of evidence to the contrary, which is sufficient to "infer", but not to conclude.

While avoiding hemp-oriented websites, I cam across an article from Audubon Magazine full of interesting factoids. One states:
Betsy Ross made the first American flag out of hempen "canvas," a word derived from cannabis

----

The original flag by Betsy Ross hangs in the Smithsonian, but someone with a better internet connection than I have (dialup...ack!) will have see if they list the flag's composition.

-----

By the way....Google is great for general searches, but when looking for specifics, try ixquick instead.

In many places, like the Merrimack valley in MA and NH, the stuff still grows along the banks every year.

Can you provide latitudes and longitudes, please? I need to verify this claim personally.

This is interesting and I thank all of you who have so thoughtfully informed me of this history. I really appreciate.

I suggest 4 sets, 15 reps of lifting a bong, every other day, then bulking up with pizza and nacho chips, and finally, trimming down for cuts.

Be sure to bring down the weight of the bong and increase the reps for more definition.

I can tell you almost exactly where it used to grow when I still lived around there.

You're in Bradford, right? The old steel bridge that's been closed for years now, on the Haverhill side, on the banks behind what used to be a used car lot.

It is sativa, so it's almost useless to smoke. Good luck!

Does history record that they smoked the product?

No. Check Post #16. If used for analgesic purposes, it was taken as tea.

Don't forget Kentucky. Louisville was the most heavily industrialized city on the Ohio River in the first half of the 19th Century, and Louisville was all about hemp. There were factories for hemp rope, hemp paper, hemp cloth and hemp cotton bagging. Louisville, in fact, was the cotton bagging manufacturing center of the nation.

Outside Louisville, Henry Clay had a medium-sized farm where, like his neighbors, he grew hemp. It was all part of America's great agricultural tradition.

Arnold is a turkey. Just look at his list of great men.

Rather an odd company for Ronald Reagan to be inserted into, I'd say. Every one of them but Reagan is a liberal icon. Or there's this strange response to the followup question:

Asked if he would include President Bush on the list, Schwarzenegger - a Republican - said: "I would say that I was ... very fond of his father. I worked for President Bush Sr., and he was a great man.

Gosh, President G. W. Bush, aren't you glad you and Rove and Parsky worked so hard to get Arnold into the governorship without having to go through a primary, like your failed earlier choice for the job, Richard Riordan? Hasn't Arnold really done a lot for you and the party, to return the favor?

Schwarzenegger needs to MAN UP and get some social backbone.

He may be my namesake but hes turned into a tree hugging, brokeback girly-man loving, BUSH hating, wind tester who has no social backbone whatsoever. He ought to “GET OFF THE POT” (pun intended) and just switch parties, we’d all be better off for it. He’s not a Reagan Republican, (or even a Nixon Republican) , he’s more of a Kennedy republican, or maybe a Bill Clinton Democrat. His comments about Pot use and Bush’s father are a slap in the face to the current president and represent all thats wrong with our nation.

Dig it. The bridge was actually re-opened recently . . . much to everyone's delight.

Last time I checked pot use and sale was illegal, and Uncle Arnold is the Governor of Caly-FORN-Nia . He needs to lead and not follow. If he did it in his youth it doesn’t mean he needs to minimize its use now. As parents we have enough Junior high schoolers trying to convince our kids to smoke dope. If Arnold is smoking pot now, then that explains a lot of his tree hugging. Grow up Arnold, your a sixty year old republican man,....act like one, or switch over to the Clinton’s party where you belong.
