Rights groups file French torture case vs Rumsfeld

PARIS (Reuters) - Human rights groups have filed a lawsuit in France alleging that former U.S. defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld allowed torture at U.S.-run detention centers in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The plaintiffs, which include the French-based International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH) and the U.S. Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), say Rumsfeld authorized interrogation techniques that led to rights abuses.

The United States says it does not torture, though it has authorized several methods widely condemned by rights groups such as exposure to extreme temperatures and 'waterboarding', or simulated drowning.

"We will only stop once the American authorities involved in the torture program are brought to justice," CCR chief Michael Ratner said in a statement posted on the FIDH Web site.

he plaintiffs argue in their filing, which was also posted on the FIDH Web site, that French courts have universal jurisdiction -- allowing them to try foreigners in cases that occurred abroad -- under the 1984 Convention Against Torture.

That's just too funny....hahahahahaha!

What do these “Rights” groups call be-headings, mutilation of women, stoning, beating and lashing? Freedom of speech?

If these nations are truly opposed to war and they believe that sanctions work as a means of controlling policy while permitting the same leadership to remain in power, when will these nations begin imposing sanctions on the United States?

Why seek regime change? Why seek prosecution for crimes?

Or is this an admission that the US does NOT equal the horrors of Nazi Germany despite was Ted Kennedy, Hunter S. Thompson, et al have said.

I don’t think Rummy is laughing his ass off. I don’t think George Bush is laughing his ass off. I am not laughing my ass off because in the long run we cannot conduct the foreign policy business of the United States if all our leaders are subject to arrest and subjected to a political show trial should they venture into the jurisdiction of France. Surely Rummy has the right after performing his duties for his country to visit Western Europe.

We cannot conduct the foreign policy of America if our leaders are subject to this kind of intimidation any more than we can conduct government in America if our leaders are liable to assassination.
I suggest a full-court diplomatic press to commit virtually all civilized nations to treaties which would prohibit these kinds of quasi legal actions except for the leaders of countries actually defeated and brought to trial after real wars.

‘We cannot conduct the foreign policy of America if our leaders are subject to this kind of intimidation ‘

I seriously doubt the former Sec Def feels the least bit ‘intimidated’ by this frivilous lawsuit filed in a country known for surrendering, kow towing to Islamic Radicals, and the four day work week.

Hence my suggestion he’s laughing about this.

Torture...now that’s a bit far-reaching. A better case would have been incompetence and mismanagement over Iraqi strategy!

You beat me to it - yes, notice the silence about REAL inhumane treatment.

It’s because these leftist groups are just a bunch of cowards. They know there will be no retribution for Americans, but there would be if they spoke ill of the jihadis.

Of course, there is the “regurgitating the apple” factor.

This is the work of the leftist morons in concert with the islamo fascist to bash America.  These fingernail biting lowlifes know well, that they can’t touch Rumsfeld.  I wonder if Soros promised them some good chunk of money for this circus.
