UN issues 'final wake-up call' on population and environment

PARIS: The human population is living far beyond its means and inflicting damage on the environment that could pass points of no return, according to a major report issued Thursday by the United Nations.

Climate change, the rate of extinction of species and the challenge of feeding a growing population are among the threats putting humanity at risk, the UN Environment Program said in its fourth Global Environmental Outlook since 1997.

"The human population is now so large that the amount of resources needed to sustain it exceeds what is available at current consumption patterns," Achim Steiner, the executive director of the program, said in a telephone interview. Efficient use of resources and reducing waste now are "among the greatest challenges at the beginning of 21st century," he said.

The program described its report, which is prepared by 388 experts and scientists, as the broadest and deepest of those that the UN issues on the environment and called it "the final wake-up call to the international community."

Over the past two decades the world population has increased by almost 34 percent to 6.7 billion from 5 billion; similarly, the financial wealth of the planet has soared by about a third. But the land available to each person on earth had shrunk by 2005 to 2.02 hectares, or 5 acres, from 7.91 hectares in 1900 and was projected to drop to 1.63 hectares for each person by 2050, the report said.

Excellent! Since this is the "final wake up call" after we laugh this bit of silliness off stage perhaps these 3rd world thugs at the UN will quit trying rob the developed world's pocketbook to prop up their corrupt dictatorial regimes.

The next step for the corrupt UN is surely to suggest euthanasia for all American contributors to Global Warming, their pet program with AlGore.

Wake up call for the UN: Get the UN out the US and the US out of the UN and do it now!

I think what really annoys the writers of this report is that they realize there will be a solution and someone will profit from it.

They’ve realized that they need to attack energy production and capitalists. Only then can their dire predictions come true.

One of the major tree hugger web-site suggests that the optimal global human population should be 80 million by the end of the century. Your going to half to break a lot of eggs to make that omelet.

Creating a phony crisis is one way of justifying a power grab. The UN has been trying this for years.

But I wouldn’t bet a paycheck on it...

don't worry...we still have a long ways to go...

they still have to pass several resolutions to determine the "final" resolution which will determine the deadline to discuss the "final final" resolution.

The U.N.'s behind times...

From Thomas Malthus' 1798 essay, An Essay on the Principle of Population

"The power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race. The vices of mankind are active and able ministers of depopulation. They are the precursors in the great army of destruction, and often finish the dreadful work themselves. But should they fail in this war of extermination, sickly seasons, epidemics, pestilence, and plague advance in terrific array, and sweep off their thousands and tens of thousands. Should success be still incomplete, gigantic inevitable famine stalks in the rear, and with one mighty blow levels the population with the food of the world."

Currently, dividing the world land mass by world population gives 5.5 acres per person.
Make of that what you will.
I’ll go find some 16.5 acres for my family while the gettin’ is still good.

Just something to ponder...”388 experts and scientists”.

You would think that only scientists who know their profession would be involved in one of these debates...so if you aren’t a scientist...then you could be “Cudzu Bob” from Iuka who noticed that some issues with the catfish pond out back, and just accidentally joined up with the environmental group. Sadly...we are already seeing people show up at townhall meetings, reservoir construction meetings, and coal-fired plant construction meetings...who claim to be “experts”...and its about time that we start to challenge their “expert-status”.

If this is the final wake-up call,

People have been complaining about earth being overrun with people since over 2000 years ago. Next year they will have the anniversary of the final-wake up call and the next year the final wake-up call Live Concert.

This is the inconvenient truth behind the convenient lie that carbon fees or taxes or substitutions are the future - only sacrifice and reductions will satisfy this model they present.

Of course choices will have to be made, can’t let the good people go away, now can we?

The key “tipping point” must have already passed as all their references to a previous sustainable (barely) time is always 1990.
