Arson investigators homed in today on two spots where the 25,000-acre Santiago Canyon fire was set, changing their theory that the blaze was ignited in three areas.

A liquid was used to light the fire along Santiago Canyon Road in two separate points. The fluid flowed along a channel to a third location, giving the appearance that there were three ignition spots.

At a news conference today, federal and local investigators said they had recovered evidence from the V-shaped canyon hollow where the fire started and had interviewed more than one person in the investigation, but had no suspects. They also offered $150,000 for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible,

Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona said authorities had received 250 tips.

"If we're going to find the individual or individuals, it is going to be by a clue from the public," Carona said.

Agents from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said they were taking a supporting role in the investigation lead by the Orange County Fire Authority.

At the point of origin, investigators placed red, yellow and blue flags to mark the fires path, concentrating on a sloped area about 50 feet from the roadway.

Anybody else notice an almost complete absence of descriptions of the suspected arsonists?

This is going to get fun.

I used to be an arson investigator. Why these people think they can light something off and leave no traces is beyond me.

They'll get him.

I don’t know where you’re getting your info. Global Warming started these fires. Maybe AlGore will get the 150 K.

That would be grossly premature.

Unless they find a "crispy critter" (dumb arsonist) in the wreckage and identify him as Muhammed Al-Afire, they don't have a thing to go on yet.

It seems unlikely that this is an insurance scam (course of fire too unpredictable), but in the absence of any evidence as to the perp or the motive it's far more likely to be one of those sickos who get a sexual thrill from setting fires, than an Islamic terrorist.

I don’t know if its been asked yet, but has there been any mention of the national origin of the 2 or 3 arrested individuals and the one that was shot and killed by police? Could any of them be Middle Eastern? Could any of them be illegal aliens from south of the border? Either case would be another embarrassing situation for both the State of California our Nations Leaders.

No, it was alien space ships! They accidentally set off the fires when they landed, from the heat of entry into our atmosphere! They couldn’t put it out so they left........

That would be a great superhero...his only super power is to blow himself up (and it only works once.)

Gosh ... do ya think maybe it's because they haven't got any idea of what the guy looks like?

The question was rhetorical -- our FRiend has already decided that the arsonist was an illegal Mexican, a Muslim terrorist, or both. I seriously tire of the implied "Grim and Knowing Nod" style of posting.

Blackwater has complete imunity. Even if they can prove Blackwater started the fire, they can’t be prosecuted. Randi Roads said so.

Ya think? Really?

That gives me some hope. I've always thought that arson would be very difficult to trace, especially seemingly random arson. If a store goes up, you look for someone who has a grudge and work backward. Something like this, I think would be much harder.

I would think it would be very hard to find evidence other than a empty gas can, lighter etc. How do they link this to a person? Shoe prints? Fingerprints etc? I would think eyewitness accounts would be the best lead?

I’ve heard that fires tend to bring out the firebugs. My guess it’s just another case of that.
