Sagging pants trend stirs debate
Sun Sentinel ^ | October 22, 2007 | Gregory Lewis

As cousins Travis and Chuckie Jones stroll off the South Broward High campus on school days, they're "gooned out."

Wearing oversized T-shirts and low-riding jeans, they mimic the hard core look that gangsta rappers first popularized in the 1990s.

The Jones boys' jean shorts, held up by belts, are hanging around their thighs and sag so low that you can't help but see the gym shorts they wear underneath.

"I like saggin'," said Travis, a 15-year-old sophomore.

For him, wearing baggy, ill-fitting jeans, is cool — and makes a strong statement. It's all about attitude.

"It tells everybody to kiss my a--. There are a lot of haters out there," Travis said.

Our "little darling" struts his "stuff" for the boys in the pen...

"It tells everybody to kiss my a--. There are a lot of haters out there," Travis said.

Well, Travis, it's not hatred, it's just that most people tend to despise idiots.

I see these fools around a lot in some areas of Fort Lauderdale. Each time we drive by them we look for the clown car they escaped from. I do have to say I'm fascinated by the cultural trend to "advertise idiocy".

I guess it's just one of those things. Hard to tear your eyes away from a train wreck and all that.

It's also great attire for job interviews.

Another example of the illiterate youth being turned out by our Public School System —

The correct verb in this sentence would be ‘kick’........

The key to changing behavior is to ignore it, thus depriving them of the attention they are seeking.

Otherwise the cycle of bad behavior just escalates.

When I see pictures like this it says to me these kids do not have a lot of self respect and therefore would not show others any respect.

If I were an employer would not hire people dressed like this, no wonder they can’t find jobs.

Then again the father probably has his ball cap on at the table and his mother has a tank top with...

I recently had a young man come into my place of business looking for a job while wearing sagging pants and more bling than I could carry in one trip. I told him when he bought some clothes that fit to come back and see me, but until then he needed to get out and stay out. I am waiting for a call from the fire dept telling me that my business has burned to the ground.

My niece’s husband is a sheriff’s deputy. He says this style of dress makes it easier to catch the delinquents.

Tatoos and certain dialects also speak (no pun) volumes.

I say this as someone who interviews perspective employees.

Although here in Raleigh, NC the unemployment rate is so low, you just about have to take what you can get.

That is all part of the idea. REmember -we are raising up the 2nd or third generation of welfare whores - and they have learned that anything they can do to give prospective employers a reason NOT to hire them - the more likely they are to get taken care of by our big government nanny-state.

I saw a very nice and well-dressed black family at the airport. They were being met by, I assume, some younger relatives.

One older lady instructed a kid -— grandkid or nephew -— to carry one of the women’s bags to the car.

He could hardly walk. The crotch of his pants was about at his knees. He had a jerky, short-stepped walk and had trouble handling the luggage.

I wished his grandmother would have smacked him.

The TV show “The Wire” had a scene where a kid is walking by a police car with his baseball cap turned sideways. Two policemen in the car motion the kid over to them and ask him a question. “Where did you get that cap…I’ve been looking for one with the bill on the side for months.”
The kid never knows they’re playing with him and explains how it’s just a regular cap but turned sideways. I fell out of the chair laughing so hard.

Thankfully we’re not hiring general labor type employees currently, but I must say that you were a little more “diplomatic” than I think that I might have been. I don’t know if I would have lost it & told him what I really thought or simply laughed the entire time I showed him to the door.

Why can't a community define its own standards of decency? Should Macon, GA permit the kinds of pornographic displays tolerated in S.F. "pride" parades? Showing underwear under one's pants is indecent, and I fully support laws and hefty fines to stamp it out, if that's what the community wants.

I am no fan of dress codes but these idiots will help bring one in and it will hurt more people than just the sagging pants bunch. Look what happening to public schools. Take Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) for instance, they imposed a strict dress code. Even blue jeans are unacceptable. Due to these idiots, IPS has a dress code - district wide. Same with other schools. Back in the 1980’s when I went through school, the public schools in most part had simple dress codes, nothing revealing and no shorts. The no shorts rule got rescinded in the early ‘90s.

I'm glad to learn that it's gym shorts that some of these people are displaying. On the ones I've seen it looks like underpants.

At the take-out counter, the young man slinging the pizzas was exposing his boxer undershorts close to the hem. It seemed unhygienic to me, but upon consideration I concluded that it was probably not any moreso than if his underwear had not been exposed. Sometimes it's best not to focus on hygeine.

At another fast-food takeout, a young man ahead of me in line also had most of his underwear exposed. He perceived my reaction, a mixture of amusement and disapproval I suppose, and pulled his trousers up. I appreciated this courtesy.

Do you suppose these people will make a shift to jocky underwear? What after that?

I believe I read on FR some time ago that the fad was to show solidarity with their friends and relatives in prison.

I think it started that way in some inner-city schools, but since then the phenomenon has really "jumped the fence" and spread far and wide (including crossing class and racial boundaries).
