Too Good, but True: A Sheriff Enforces the Law
Townhall.com ^ | Sunday, October 21, 2007 | Jackie Gingrich Cushman

Most of the chain e-mails I receive, I delete. Occasionally I read one that appears to be humorous or interesting. My mother sent me one titled SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN. This e-mail, while not humorous, is definitely interesting.

The chain e-mail is about Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the operation he runs in Maricopa County, Ariz. The e-mail says the inmates live in tent cities, there are female chain gangs and inmates eat brown-bag lunches. I had received Sheriff Joe e-mails before, as had my husband, and we always dismissed them as urban legend, amazing, entertaining, but certainly not true.

(Excerpt) Read more at townhall.com ...

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Crime/Corruption; Culture/Society; Government; US: Arizona
KEYWORDS: arpaio; county; enforcement; law; maricopa; pinklove; sheriff
This piece by Newt's daughter includes a phone call from Sherriff Arpaio in responce to her call to Joe's public affairs officer.

I expecially liked response to the 'brown bag lunch' question as he explained they only serve TWO meals a day (including a bologna sandwich) and how he “took away their (the inmates’) Kool-Aid, so they are drinking a lot more water now.”

Here's a 'related media' from the source page: Sheriff Joe Wants You!

I LOVE Joe Arpaio!!

A sheriff who enforces the law! He should be prosecuted. He does not seem to understand that the constitution only permits enforcement of politically correct laws.

This guy rules

Maybe I should see if he’ll get a LE job in Arizona.

That is, after I come back from Europe next year.

Here’s another email about Sheriff Joe:

This guy is amazing. He should be running for president!

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN

Maricopa County, Arizona was spending approx $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe Arpaio offered to take the department over and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who’d like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.

Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78. The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals. I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was re-elected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he’s in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hot-line phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn’t doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He’s kind of a “Git-R Dun” kind of Sheriff!

Most people that receive this email say that, if Joe was running for Congress, he would get elected guaranteed! Please share with others.

No kiddin'....and if you go to the Maricopa County Sherriff's Jail Information page, large red letters proclaim:

ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE BANNED FROM VISITING SHERIFF'S JAILS.

You're right; he just doesn't 'understand'!

Ain't that great?

Here is another gem from mcso.org:
Persons adopting animals from the MCSO Animal Safe Hospice must promise to treat their adopted animals with care and affection, and:
*Provide adequate meals and water
*Provide a safe environment
*Check animals daily (including ears and toes) for anything harmful to them - like burrs, foxtails, ticks and fleas
*Brush and bathe animals regularly, and keep their nails clipped
*Use flea and tick prevention
*Do not hit the animals, even with a rolled-up newspaper
*Use praise and humane obedience training
*Obey all leash laws
*Return unwanted animals to a "no-kill" shelter, or to MASH

While I really appreciate the intellect of Newt G, for whatever reason the hyphen-ated people tend towards the irrational or sophistry. At least the print/media types.

And for better or worse whenever I see in print or hear it, I always have George Carlins’ words ringing in my ears “Pick a f*king name, lady!” lol.

There's an added element to his treatment of the prisoners...they're not on holiday = and wouldn't care to ever go back... At the same time, in taking care of animals - and the daily contact with them, being responsible for someone else's well being - they are learning valuable lessons, and just maybe becoming less violent in nature.

Ditto in growing, harvesting their own food. Great lessons and pride in personal achievement...

I think his recidivism rates are low comparably and probably the rate of violence as well-

"they are learning valuable lessons, and just maybe becoming less violent in nature."

And that is precisely why the ACLU is looking to shut them down: it doesn't perpetuate the "donate to the lawyers" system.

This sheriff has been the subject of numerous media stories. He’s a little freaky. A bit light in the loafers.

Ah, an abvocate of the drive-by media.

Of course you hate him; he's cleaning up the crime problem that you guys have spent five decades nurturing. He's a brilliant and dynamic executive, that improves everything he touches, even while cutting the budget. Yes, he's lightening up the leftists' loafers for sure.

Ah! But, the media loves him. He is a publicity hound of the biggest kind. Quite a few I know who work in his dept. or in the state prison system think he's crazy and don't care much for him. Although, one person said his wife is the sweetest lady.
