SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- The "Mona Lisa" has long been shrouded in mystery, including one long-standing question about the famous lady: What happened to her eyebrows and eyelashes?

Now, a French engineer and inventor says he's uncovered part of the enigma.

A lot of Renaissance paintings show people with no eyelashes. I've wondered why for many years.

I thought it might have been the 'style' to imitate redheads, who often have very pale brows and lashes.

It may be that the state of hygiene back then meant that people lost/removed eyebrows, etc. Less lice and other things. Remember no “Head and Shoulders” and few baths.
