I should quit really while fairly well ahead. I had mentioned the possible revulsion of the Founding Fathers at the former mother country and it's protracted torture before death.
I am reminded of the serial killer Bundy. Decent trusting young women who thought he needed help. This was their death warrant. I saw him plead the old "liberal" line, to the press. Oh, says he, you will not gain anything by killing me. Try to find out what makes people like me do this.
He was allowed to view the outside world, prior to his execution. Sure there were two gatherings. The party types for his demise and the anti-death penalty types. The camera panned across to a hearse waiting.
I felt the horrid pang of raw fear that was within him, as he realized it was nearly all over. The moment of truth when he saw that hearse.
Justice was done. The law took it's course. I feel that society could do nothing more than that.
Well said, Peter. Concerning one of your earlier posts; IIRC the writer’s of the U.S. Constitution wanted to prevent punishments such as drawing and quartering, keel hauling and the gibbet. They are all cruel and unusual.
There are desperate times when someone needs killing. Unfortunately you must kill. I believe most of us, myself included, have the urge to take a person who has committed a truly evil act and hurt them cruelly. It’s a necessary act of decency and self discipline to resist. Please note that the practices at Gitmo are NOT torture!
