Turkey’s Top General: "The US Shot Itself in the Foot"
http://www.thememriblog.org/turkey/blog_personal/en/3225.htm ^

The US shot itself in the foot, commented the Chief of General Staff General Yaşar Büyükanıt after a US congressional vote branding the killing of Armenians in 1915-17 as genocide, Milliyet reported yesterday. In an interview with the daily, Büyükanıt said if the non-binding resolution that passed in a House committee last week was to be adopted in the House too, Turkish-US military ties would “never be the same again.”

The general expressed the opinion that world parliaments had no business in judging history. He said, “The US is a very important ally of ours, but an ally does not act like this.”

This week, General Buyukanit will visit Israel.

The US shot itself in the foot

Ahh, no, Pelosi and Reid shot the US in the foot, and it's too bad the Turks don't get it. But then, Bush should have put the traitor Rats in their place (Leavenworth) when he had control of congress.

It got through the judiciary during the clinton administration, and Clinton begged Hassert not to bring the resolution up for a vote because it would undermind foreign policy with Turkey.

Hassert did not bring it up for a vote because he thought in the long run it would hurt our country.

..and that was not during a time of war.

So if the house decides to approve this measure calling the killings genocide and Turkey decides to kick the US out of their country, which is what they did to France, wouldn't this cripple the war in Iraq and force and early withdrawal?

Did anyone REALLY think the Democrats were concerned with nearly 100 year-old murders by the Turks? Only the truly spacey would think so...

Trying to hold up the budget for the war didn't work. The PR attack on the war didn't work - so the next step is to sabotage it by cutting off avenues to support the war on the ground (supply lines).

If anyone doubts the level of hatred the traitorous Left has for the US, they are blind.

How many resolutions have been passed by the U.S. Congress condemning what the left facilitated in southeast Asia in the 70s?

It could force early withdrawal and bring about the genocide the Democrats so desperately hunger for.

Has anyone reminded them they are like a nest of vampires?

If they did, then we are morally obligated to say so

Yeah, we should replace the pledge of allegiance with a condemnation of Turkey in American schools every morning.

And Israel blew our boat out of the water back in the 60s. Today Turkey has good trade relations with Israel and allows something like 70% of our Iraqi supplies to enter through their nation.

Has our Congress passed a resolution condemning what the left forced in South East Asia in the 70s?

Three million people died. By most accounts, that’s three times the deaths we’re supposed to be condemning Turkey for.

The Ottoman government was as much a Syrian, Azerbaijani, Iraqi, Kuwaiti, Saudi, Egyptian, Tunisian, Lebanese government as it was an Anatolian government.

At the end of WWI the Ottoman state was abolished and carved up by the victorious allies. The people who lived there were punished through the creation of various kings and dictators to rule over them.

The Turks fought back ~ presumably they are selected out for condemnation because they were not sufficiently survile.

This is a back door attempt by the Marxists Dimocrats to defund the war effort. They pass this, Turkey shuts down their air space for the Iraq effort, etc., then the Dims get what they wanted without actually taking away the funds for the effort themselves.

Yes, the Turks did commit genocide, and yes we should have condemned it WHEN IT HAPPENED, but don’t you find it fishy that the Dems bring it up NOW, in a time of war when Turkey is helping to supply our military on their way to Iraq?

Also, do you really think the Dems brought it up because they wanted to condemn genocide and speak out against radical Islam? When have the Dems EVER spoken out against radical Islam? They’re doing it to sabotage our efforts in Iraq.

Yes we should condemn the genocide, but wait until after the war, not right now when it hurts us. Just why we didn’t do this decades ago is beyond me.

We should have proclaimed independent Kurdistan in May of 2003.

Reward your friends, punish your enemies. That's the way of the world.

As soon as Turkey denied passage to the 4th ID, they lost all right to complain. All this touchy-feely stuff is a bunch of crap.

We don’t need to do this now. It serves no purpose. But now that it’s up for a vote, I don’t see any way out of it. Thanks to the dems.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am under the impression that this was already passed by the Congress before.

It's come up twice, but didn't get passed either time.

There’s really only one morally valid question here: Did the Turks commit genocide against the Armenians during WWI? Yes or no? If they did, then we are morally obligated to say so (if nothing else,) regardless of the consequences.

We have, many times. But why do it again now? It's ancient history. The government that did it was overthrown by Ataturk and his band of young military officers. The spirit of Ataturk is the only thing keeping Turkey from going Islma nutso. It's weakening though.

If the Turks had let the 4th ID move across Turkey. They'd likely not have the problem with left wing Islamo Nut terrorist type Kurds coming across the border. The Turks have not treated the Kurds of Turkey well, historically speaking. But they also fail to make distinctions between Kurdish groups. And there are big differences. The ones giving them problems have gotten Iranian support, and earlier they got support from a certain Socialist country that is not far from Kurdistan and Turkey.

They pretty much always have. Turks and Jews go way back. 1492 is yesterday in comparison.
