Ron Paul’s supporters aren’t Republicans
eyeon08.com ^ | 10/13/2007 | Soren Dayton

A standard question is "who is actually supporting Ron Paul?" There has been an assumption that the answer is "not Republicans", but there isn’t always evidence. Then I was reminded of this when a comment was left on a video of Mike Huckabee putting the smack-down on Ron Paul. The recent comment said:

If you support Ron Paul, understand that you MUST REGISTER TO VOTE REPUBLICAN. The cut off in most states is the middle of this month. That is only a couple of days away. It is CRITICAL that if you want Ron Paul to be our next President, you MUST vote for him in the Primaries, and therefore MUST register to vote Republican. To do so and to get this man into the Presidential Election, simply go to gopdotcom and take a few seconds to Register To Vote Republican TODAY. Thank You!

Then, of course, there is the 2nd banner on Ron Paul’s site. (banner URL here)

Yup. The Ron Paul team is campaigning to non-Republicans to change registration… Awesome.

I say we should purge the Republican Party of all the back-sliding polytheists, secularists, libertarians, the so-called economic conservatives, social moderates and whoever else we have to get rid to finally get the party to be true to its founding principles. Then, finally, it will be clear what the Republican Party stands for.

And, if you, like me, believe that Ron Paul is not a Republican, remember that come the primary. Especially if you live in the TX 14 Congressional District.

Ron Paul has a real Republican running against him in the Congressional primary — Chris Peden. You can find out more about Chris at his web site: http://www.chrispeden.org.

Your vote will make a difference.

OMG the horror, having a message that reasonates with people across the political spectrum.

Does Romney, McCain, Thompson, or Giuliani have independents, libertarians, folks who never voted before, and old-school liberals lining up supporting them? H-E-Double-Hockey Sticks No.

This article is a laughable hit-piece, but thanks for the post.

Odd as it my sound, Ron Paul has a very real chance of winning one of the early primaries! Michigan!

All the RATS but Hildabeast have removed themselves from the ballot so the RATS will crossover and vote Republican.

They don’t have to be registered in any party here so you can vote for anyone you want as long as you vote in only one party.

The Michigan primary is now meaningless unless something changes.

Nothing wrong with Buchananites and Libertarians supporting Paul. As for Neo-Nazis and Truthers, Paul is not associated with them, he has denied involvement with them, his campaign does not coordinate or receive money from them, & Paul simply does not know who these people are at his rallies unless he met each and every one of them personally.

I know you guys hate Paul and are envious that real people from all walks of life are supporting him instead of one of the approved liberal media Republican candidates, and it simply pisses you guys off. Honestly, you should be thankful that Paul is running and these folks are registering as Republicans to vote against Hillary in the general instead of staying home or voting 3rd party like they always do.

ROFL. You think Paul will lose his Congressional seat after getting national exposure as a presidential candidate? His district is proud of him and will return him back to Congress in a heartbeat.

Chris Peden is roadkill.

Nothing wrong with Buchananites and Libertarians supporting Paul.

I never said there was. However, it is disingenuous to say Paul is supported by Republican conservatives when he clearly is not. According to the latest polls, he is at 2% among Republicans.

As for Neo-Nazis and Truthers, Paul is not associated with them, he has denied involvement with them, his campaign does not coordinate or receive money from them, & Paul simply does not know who these people are at his rallies unless he met each and every one of them personally.

Well, the question is why are these radical and extremist groups so attracted to Paul in the first place? He must be saying or doing something that makes the "Bush Did 9/11" and the "I Hate the Joooos" crowds so fanatic in their support of him.

Nobody here hates Paul or is envious of his support. His support barely registers in the polls and all those neo-Nazis, 9/11 Truthers and other assorted rabble who are registering Republican are not likely to vote for the eventual GOP nominee.

I’m proud to disassociate myself from the Republicans who could sink so low as to support Arnold Schwarzenegger or Rudy Giuliani. The GOP of amnesty, the GOP of expanded federal power, the GOP that has urged globalism, unfair trade, expanded federal involvement in education, expanded government involvement in medical care, and whittling away at our Bill of Rights: of course those in the GOP who have stood for all those things would hate Ron Paul. If you care about our sovereignty, if you care about restraining the power of a federal government run amok with spending and authoritarianism, then Ron Paul might look intriguing. Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter are really the only alternatives, and even they have succumbed to the temptation to hand more power to the federal government than it should ever have.

So, you’re in favor of Dems and Independents changing their party affiliation for the Primary election in order to Spam the voting, and then changing back to their own party for the general election in order to vote for the candidate they really support?

Your hypothetical is more suited to a Giuliani scenario, as Dems and independents would cross primary party lines to vote for Rudy so that the weakest Republican candidate (Giuliani) is nominated to lose to Hillary (and split the GOP). Why would they do the same to Paul? They are genuinely attracted to his message per Paul's fundraising and support at rallies and would easily support him over a Stalinist like Hillary.

In other words, in your world it is “Go Hillary, Go”.

Listen pal, nobody here wants Hillary to win. If Dr. Paul can bring in libertarian/swing/independent voters back into the GOP, the GOP will have the coalition needed to beat Hillary -- assuming that if Paul is not nominated, the GOP nominee will at least co-opt a few of Paul's issues, these people will likely vote for the GOP nominee then. The GOP has dropped the ball on spending, the war, and long-term issues such as SS/Medicare insolvency and free trade. Why do you think people are supporting Paul? He's virtually the only candidate who is talking about these issues while the other Republican candidates remain fixated on "staying the course" for Iraq and to Hell with the other issues.

Pullllease. Don’t tell me that you have bought into all this BS from the Run Paul campaign and missed the fact that it is all smoke and mirrors for the Dems winning the White House in 08? You can’t be that naive?

You are delusional and do not understand how to win in politics. Dr. Paul's conservative-libertarian message is reasonating with a broad swath of voters and instead of embracing them, you want to give them the shaft because you think they're "kooks" and you want the GOP to stick to their same-old tired, socialism-lite agenda. Ron Paul's entry into the presidential race is the best thing to happen to the GOP since some guy named Reagan ran in 1980.

I agree. I know quite a few people who voted R in the past who like RP. These people are not political junkies like most on FR, just run of the mill white collar conservatives. People here tend to be so partisan, conservative principles sometimes seem to be of secondary importance to supporting the party line.
