Jimmy Carter: One Helicopter Away From Greatness
http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=27472&only&rss ^

Posted on 10/11/2007 9:23:59 PM PDT by cool2007

Jimmy Carter, America’s most powerless, indecisive President, who allowed a mob of uneducated Iranian students to hold Americans hostage for more than a year, says he wouldn’t have done anything differently.

Speaking with XM Radio’s Bob Edwards on Tuesday, former President Jimmy Carter (you know, the guy who gave the “malaise” speech) told the radio host that he “would not want to have changed anything” during his presidency. Well, okay, maybe one thing.

Referring to the Iran hostage crisis, Carter said, “I have a specific regret in not having one more helicopter when I wanted to rescue our hostages. If I had had one more helicopter, they would have been rescued. I might have been reelected president.”

Yeah, I guess you are just an unlucky idiot, President Carter.

President Reagan took away all of your glory, having negotiated with the Iranians just prior to Inauguration Day for their release, right?

Wow, you were a really ineffectual president. At least you had an economic termed coined in your honor, “Stagflation”.

All those people suffered and this country was made to look absolutely impotent and his concern is not being reelected.

I think that Free republic should pass a non-binding resolution dissolving the US Citizenship of one jimmah catah. FR would make all of the networks... and America will be reminded of how horrible this man was.

He actually said in a pathetic sweater chat... that "America's best days are behind us". Ronaldo Magnus jammed that speech right up of jimmah's keester with the "Shining City on the Hill" and "You ain't see nuthin' yet"! One day I will urinate on jimmah's head stone!

I regret that the American people elected a man without a brain in his head.

Maybe if he Carter had a brain or even a reasonable facsimile thereof, he wouldn’t have facilitiated the return of Khomeini to Iran and greased the Shah’s slide out of there in the first place.

We’re still paying the price for Carter’s massively stupid “Islamic Card” he thought was so artful to play against the Soviet Union on its southern border.

Thanks ever so much Carter, for Al Qaeda and all the rest you unleashed on the world, you lamebrain.

Could we have a FR moratorium on Jimmah posts?

Poor form as always. I’d have to say the failed raid is not his worst mistake. His worst mistake was losing Iran, dismantling the CIA, giving up the Panama Canal, destroying the economy, etc. The aborted rescue probably was a poor plan as well.

Just had a liberal jackass telling me what an evangelical Christian Jimmy Carter is. I pointed out his book claims abortion is a traditional American value. They argued that just because Jimmy supports the right to have an abortion, doesn't mean he believes in abortion.

I was really fooled by Carter. Thought at the time he was an embarrassingly inept president with a corrupt administration ($100,000 from Qaddafi to alcoholic brother Billie Carter). But I was wrong. Carter was a messed up left wing ideologue, and now a full fledged America hating, dictator worshiping jerk.

I do not think five or ten more helicopters would have made any difference, as there was very little chance that the hostages would have been rescued. But if they had all been killed in the attempt in April, by November the whole mess would likely have been forgotten by the media.

Jimmy Carter: One Helicopter Away From Greatness

"For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!'"
--John Greenleaf Whittier

And, if 9-11-01 had happened on Bill Clinton's watch, he would have had a better legacy [according to him].

The only silver lining in a Hillary presidency will be that it will be one term. Unfortunately Jimmah shows how much damage can be done in one term.

I agree with your assessment of Jimma. He was inept and naive as President. His anti-American rants are disgusting.

It is a good thing that there was not another helicopter. The rescue had disaster written all over it. I do not blame him for the failed rescue. Another helicopter would have made a bad situation worse.

The left adores Jimma. The left is determined to repeat his mistakes in foreign and domestic policies. The energy policies promoted by the dims are similar to the crazy ideas of the late 70s: windfall profits taxes, mandates and subsidies for favored technologies, and an emphasis on forced conservation. The public rejected these policies in the 80s because of the poor economy. With a strong economy, the public has not rejected these policies. Perhaps the next recession will change the public’s mind. Somehow, I think the dims will just find new scapegoats and shove more socialism down our throat when the next recession comes.

Jimmy came up with the “Misery Index” which came back to bite him. He combined the Prime Interest rate, the rate of inflation and the unemployment rate.

I am reasonable sure no other president has even come close to Jimmys misery index. I think it was over 40 at one time.

The Delta Force guys were and are convinced that the mission would have succeeded if they'd only had transport. Beckwith made the decision to abort because they were one helo short of what they'd pre-identified as their minimum number.

But I guess we'll never really know.

Carter may be right. One more helicopter might indeed have made the difference in the outcome of the raid. The bigger question is “ what next”. A navy uncle of mine was tasked with making arrangements with Egypt as to some unexplained aspects of this raid. He referred to this as his piece of the “war zone”. I gather from the little he said that they expected the raid would trigger a war with Iran.

As late as this all was in his term this might have changed the tone of the election from helpless and impotent Jimmy trapped in the Rose Garden to War President CINC Carter who needs your support to finish the job. The tendency is to rally around the president in time of war and his other failings aside it might have been enough.

Take it from someone who was there. That mission was not a walk in the park and was one of the most risky plans I have ever seen. I was in the air when the mission was aborted. My first thought was that I was going to live to see tomorrow. We all knew that most of us were not coming back. We were the best trained troops in the world and that mission scared the hell out of all of us.

That’s about right...21.5% Prime Rate (1980), 13.5% rate of inflation (1981) and about 10.7 unemployment(1982), for total of 45.7 Peak Misery Index..Paul Volker was the Fed Chairman too...Carter appointed him in 1979 and then he finished his term in 1987 during Reagan’s Presidency . Per Answers.com and NYTimes.com
