Every complaint I heard about the police has been balanced with praise -- except in most media outlets.

They are more pro-American than Americans. Frightening but probably true.

The growth of the Iraqi Police's strength has been impressive. But the real heart of the story lies in average Iraqis turning against the terrorists to secure their communities. Citizen involvement and participation have turned the tide. If it can work Anbar, it can work anywhere in Iraq. There are grounds for hope.

I trusted the Iraqi police in that city enough that I was willing to travel with them without any protection from the American military... OK. Kirkuk is pretty mellow and I'm sure most of the police there are cool. More volatile parts of Iraq are calming down (although the last couple of days in Baghdad have been a little noisy), but no way would I go anywhere with Iraqis and no US military!
Not yet, anyway.
