As his son appeared in federal court on explosives charges, Samir Megahed struggled with the overwhelming strain of the prosecution and family problems.
'We're under big stress,' the 60-year-old said in a telephone interview.
Megahed said he is recovering from a heart attack he suffered 11 days ago. 'I am good now,' he said.
On Monday, he said, his 68-year-old brother died in Egypt. Samir Megahed is unable to travel to be with his brother's family because he is hoping his son, Youssef, will be released on bail.
One of the conditions of a bail order is that the entire family would have to surrender their passports. The bail order is under appeal by prosecutors. A federal judge has scheduled a hearing for Friday on that issue.
'I am waiting to give the government my passport,' Samir Megahed said.
Samir Megahed said prosecutors last week gave subpoenas to him, his wife and daughter, calling for them to appear before a grand jury. But the subpoenas were canceled Wednesday afternoon, with no reason given.
It was not clear why Megahed's testimony was sought and then canceled. Steve Cole, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office, would not comment, saying his office does not discuss grand jury matters.
Megahed's son, Youssef, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of illegally transporting explosives. He and another University of South Florida student, Ahmed Mohamed, were arrested Aug. 4 in South Carolina after deputies said they found explosives in their trunk after a traffic stop.
Almost every day they publish a tear jerker about misunderstood muslim America-haters, illegal aliens who don't receive enough free benefits from stingy taxpayers, or Hispanics who by their mere presence enrich our bland, self-centered, white bread, Anglo lives and communities.
They are especially sympathetic to the growing muslim population centered around the University and can be relied on to spin any Islamo-terrorist news their way.
At the Tribune there is great concern for the melodramatic muslims who are always shocked and hurt by accusations of terrorism but no reporting on the muslims' failure to denounce islamic terrorism and their lack of support for the War On Terror.
If you were a Christian and this happened in an Islamic country, your son would have been dead a long time ago.
Cry me a river!
“It was not clear why Megahed’s testimony was sought and then canceled.”
They realized that he was just going to lie to them, so why bother.....
wah!
Oh my bleeding heart......................snort.......snicker........and I should care because????????
Another Megahed -- and not enough in it to make a good rattle if he fell on it.
At the first sign of aggression on the part of the ragheads within this nation, these self same bleeding hearts would scream like little girls and DEMAND the military (the one they delight in trashing) rush to their rescue.
I am continually amazed at what mental gymnastics these sorry assed people must go through that enables them to look into a mirror and not puke.
They should take some R&R in ....... Lebanon.
These are useless undesirable immigrants. What exactly do they do for this nation? Nothing I can see
France needs a new kind of immigrant one who is “selected, not endured” - Nicholas Sarkozy
Yep, I'd imagine he is. And I should care ... why?
'We're under big stress,'
Yep. Being the father of a murdering piece of scum will do that to ya.

In a 12-minute video posted on YouTube, an Egyptian man wearing a white shirt, khaki pants and rubber gloves explains in Arabic how to turn a toy boat into a bomb.
His name is Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed, and last month he was arrested in Goose Creek after authorities found four PVC pipes containing a mixture of potassium nitrate, kitty litter and sugar in his car’s trunk.
Mohamed told FBI agents he made the video to teach “those persons in Arabic countries to defend themselves against the infidels invading their countries,” according to federal court documents released late Tuesday.
Specifically, he told the FBI “the technology which he demonstrated in the tape was to be used against those who fought for the United States.”
Ahmed Mohamed admitted to FBI agents that he made a training video to show people in “Arabic countries” how to use remote-controlled bombs against American soldiers.
Someone using Mohamed’s laptop computer used the search words “martyrdooms” and “suiciders” to link to the video on YouTube.
Authorities found a toy remote-control boat, still in its box, and a partially dismantled digital watch at Youssef Samir Megahed’s Tampa, Fla., home. They suspect that the items are the beginnings of a homemade bomb.
On Mohamed’s computer, authorities found a file titled “Bomb Shock,” which contains files about explosives, including detailed descriptions of TNT and of C-4, a military-grade plastic explosive.
Is that a question?
No, it was a comment on the press feeling sorry for this terrorist and his family.
