Rice contributes to healthier eating
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- People who eat rice have more nutritious diets that are lower in saturated fat and sugar than the diets of non-rice eaters, a U.S. study found.
Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on blood pressure, blood lipids and risk for metabolic syndrome from 1999 to 2004, the researchers found nearly 26 percent of consumers reported eating rice during the 24-hour period. Among adults ages 19 to 50, individuals who eat rice -- white or brown -- consume: less total fat, saturated fat and added sugars; higher amounts of 12 essential vitamins and minerals, a higher quality diet including more fruit and legumes; and nearly four teaspoons less added sugar and 7 grams less solid fats.
"Both brown and white rice have a lot of nutrients -- white rice is fortified with many vitamins and minerals -- but rice is also a conduit for eating more nutritious foods -- usually less meat and more vegetables and it is usually served with less saturated fat than foods served without rice," registered dietitian Julie Upton, who presented the findings at the American Dietetic Association Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Philadelphia, told United Press International.

Rice is abundant and cheap. It is very popular in 3rd world countries as a staple. The high glycemic index provokes insulin spikes. It's a poor choice for people on a low carb diet.

Thats white rice, right? Brown rice is much better for you, I think.White rice is just brown rice with the bran polished off. The brown stuff gives you extra nutrients to go with your glycemic spike. It certainly tastes better. See brown rice.

Fat is essential. Rice is just sugar.
Sugar is poison.
To: blam
As others have suggested above, this articles idea of what’s nutritious is backwards - saturated fats and proteins (meat) are essentials, whereas unsaturated fats (plant oils) are unhealthy, especially when heated or processed, as in most of the food stuffs found in a grocery store or restaurant.

My kind of guy! Check out my tag line. I smoke a Lady-like cigar every year on my birthday. I’ll substitute Southern Comfort for the bourbon and my burgers are ground venison which I’ve butchered myself. I can take or leave tater chips, but I LOVE Nachos. :)
Screw the Food Gnatzies. I’m active and work outdoors. I can pretty much eat all I want because I burn off any and all calories I consume.
Again, screw the Food Gnatzies! (I just like to say it, LOL!)

Rice is abundant and cheap. It is very popular in 3rd world countries as a staple. The high glycemic index provokes insulin spikes. It's a poor choice for people on a low carb diet. Of all the rice varieties out there, basmati rice has nearly the lowest, if not the lowest # on the glycemic index (this was according to a diabetic friend of mine). Most rice is considered high on the glycemic scale but basmati rice is considered "medium" on the glycemic scale.
That's one of the reasons I like Korean cuisine so much. You don't have to eat it with rice to be authentic. A lot of the meat dishes like bulgogi and dak kalbi are served w/ lettuce and you wrap the meat in the lettuce and eat it like a burrito.
