Sen. Larry Craig said Wednesday he will remain in office while a Minnesota judge considers his bid to withdraw a guilty plea, overturning the senator's previous statements of intent to resign by Sunday.
The Idaho Republican said he will stay in office "for now," but people close to him said he will remain until the judge rules. Hennepin County Judge Charles Porter said he probably won't decide the matter until next month.
Craig, who originally had planned to seek a fourth term next year, pleaded guilty in August to disorderly conduct following a June 11 sting operation in a men's room at the Minneapolis airport.
Craig's comments Wednesday were greeted with chilly silence from Senate Republican leaders who have made clear they wish he would step down and let Idaho's GOP governor name a replacement. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters he had nothing to add to previous statements in which he said he thought Craig made the right decision on Sept. 1, when he announced his intention to resign by the month's end.

There may be more bad news on this front. Democrats may be able to find a stronger candidate than Larry LaRocco. Walt Minnick, who is personally wealthy and cuts a less partisan, more moderate figure than LaRocco, is rumored to be considering the race. Minnick ran against Craig in 1996 and ran well ahead of Bill Clinton, who lost Idaho by a wide margin that same year.

Minnick ran against Craig in his first re-election campaign. Craig still got 57% of the vote. If Craig stays then he won’t have a chance of renonmination if he were stupid enough to run. There’s plenty of time for the GOP to rally around a candidate. Regardless of what Craig decides Idaho should still be sending a Republican to the Senate in this seat in 2008.

Some Freeper predicted this today on an earlier thread when the Judge in the case said it would take a week and half or so to make his decision. All hanging on does for him is to keep his perversion in the headlines. It’s not like people are going to think any differently of him if the plea gets set aside.

Minnick only got 39.9% against Craig in 1996, so he’d have to do a hell of a lot better than that to have a chance to win.
